“Just now, what did you call me?”
Seeing his fiancée lost in thought, Wei Shian tightened his large hand around her slender waist.
Lu Jiu cleared her throat, lifted her chin slightly, and took the initiative, “Can’t I call you Shian?”
“You can, you can call me however you like. But… I didn’t quite hear it just now, can you say it again so I can listen?”
Wei Shian chuckled and kissed her several times.
“No! Stop messing around, there are cameras in the greenhouse.”
“I know.”
Seeing that he really didn’t do anything more intimate, Lu Jiu relaxed.
However, still worried about the man’s leg, she moved closer to him after sitting for a short while, chatting idly.
Time flew by quickly with random conversations, and in the blink of an eye, another hour had passed.
But there was still no news from her sister and the others, making Lu Jiu restless, frequently checking her phone.
Noticing her anxiety, Wei Shian subtly changed the topic, “What about the wedding photos I mentioned before? Have you given it any thought?”
Lu Jiu snapped back to reality, “Sure, have you found a studio?”
Wei Shian replied, “The studios in Haicheng aren’t that great. We could either go to Shanghai, or I could ask a friend to come over and take them?”
Shanghai is less than a two-hour drive away, so going there for the shoot is a good option. But, “Is your friend also running a studio?”
Wei Shian responded, “Sort of. But he mainly works on photo shoots for celebrities and models.”
Even though many say Lu Jiu is more beautiful than a celebrity, celebrities still feel distant in real life, so she couldn’t help but ask a few more questions out of curiosity.
After listening to her boyfriend’s introduction, knowing that his friend was someone he grew up with and had even won first prize in an international photography competition in the art category, she immediately made up her mind, “Then let’s invite your friend to our home.” Mainly because she thought the peonies would bloom soon, providing a beautiful outdoor setting.
Wei Shian also preferred this option, “I’ll contact him later.”
Her sister and the others didn’t return until after eight.
Lu Jiu, who had been waiting eagerly, welcomed them joyfully. But as soon as she saw their expressions, she became nervous, “Wh-what’s wrong? Did something bad happen?”
Lu Jun poked her sister, “Don’t overthink it.”
Lu Jiu asked, “Then why do you all look like this?” Shouldn’t they be in high spirits? Why do they not only seem unhappy but also a bit upset?
Fang Wenyi pulled her youngest daughter aside, “We saw that jerk Li Zhiyuan at the hospital just now.”
As long as her sister and baby were okay, Lu Jiu felt relieved at first but then grabbed Officer Wei, who was about to follow her father into the kitchen to serve food, “Don’t go, your leg isn’t fully healed yet.”
Seeing this, Fang Wenyi finally smiled, “Yes, taking care of your injury is important. There will be plenty of opportunities in the future.”
So Wei Shian didn’t insist and sat down next to his fiancée.
Lu Jiu then picked up the previous topic, “What happened with Uncle Li?”
Mentioning this caused the smile that had just appeared on Fang Wenyi’s face to disappear again, replaced by an expression of disgust.
It was Lu Jun who explained, “Uncle Li was at the hospital with a pregnant woman who looked like she was about to give birth.”
“…” Lu Jiu was shocked. Although she knew Uncle Li had always been unfaithful, there had never been any illegitimate children before,
“What about Aunt Yue?”
Realizing who they were talking about, Wei Shian quietly confirmed, “Is he Li Ze’s father?”
Lu Jiu nodded, “Yes.”
“Bang!” Fang Wenyi, growing more and more furious, slammed the table hard, pulled out her phone, and said as she walked out, “I’m going to make a call.”
Lu Jiu blinked, a little worried, and looked at her sister.
After everything calmed down, Lu Jun, who was getting sleepy, suddenly became excited, “This time, Aunt Yue should get a divorce. Isn’t that great? Uncle Li is at fault, so Aunt Yue can get a lot of money. She’s only 48, and there are plenty of good days ahead.”
When Lu Jiu thought about it that way, it did seem like a good thing.
The next morning.
As the family sat at the breakfast table, Lu Jiu mentioned the plan to visit the Wei family.
Fang Wenyi swallowed the egg in her mouth, “It’s about time. Mom has prepared some gifts for you to bring along.”
Lu Jiu was curious, “When did you prepare them?”
“For a while now.” As she spoke, Fang Wenyi turned to her son-in-law, “Before you go home, stop by the hospital for a checkup. If everything’s okay, spend some time with your parents at home since it’s rare for you to have some time off.”
Wei Shian replied, “Thank you, Auntie.”
Fang Wenyi waved her hand, “No need to be so polite. By the way, I also have to accompany your older sister to the flower market later. She’s not past the three-month mark yet, so I need to take care of her.”
Last night, Lu Jun, who had been restrained and couldn’t leave, said, “I already told you, I have a secretary and an assistant with me. You don’t need to follow me around. Besides, Feng Ming will take care of me once he’s done with his work in a few days.”
At a crucial time, her older brother-in-law was quite reliable, so Fang Wenyi changed her mind, “Then I’ll come back when Feng Ming can accompany you.”
It seemed that their mother was determined to go with her, so Lu Jun quietly drank her porridge.
Han Feng Ming let out a subtle sigh of relief, “Thank you, Mom.”
After breakfast, since Lu Jun had something urgent to attend to, Fang Wenyi moved the gifts prepared for the in-laws to the living room and hurriedly left with her luggage.
Before leaving, she didn’t forget to give the newly engaged couple some advice, basically saying that they didn’t want to go through another situation like Lu Jun’s.
Lu Jiu was so embarrassed that she couldn’t even look at the man beside her.
At the hospital checkup, Wei Shian’s leg was healing well, with the surface wounds already healed.
Of course, it was only the surface, as walking still caused a pulling pain.
So, Lu Jiu drove to the Wei family home.
Because there hadn’t been many people at home recently, she didn’t feel at ease and decided to bring Marshmallow along.
The May breeze was refreshing and pleasant.
Finally able to go out, Wei Shian sat in the passenger seat, feeling the warm wind brushing against his cheeks, making him feel completely at ease.
Meanwhile, on the other side.
Since receiving a call from her younger daughter-in-law last night, Fang Qiuci had been busy non-stop.
She led the housekeeper in doing a thorough cleaning and didn’t stop there.
Early this morning, she personally drove out to buy a lot of food and fruits and even prepared a big bag of snacks that Mudan liked.
“That’s enough. Our house is just like this. No matter how much you fuss over it, you can’t make it look any better.” Seeing his wife busy from the moment she woke up, Wei Jun, who rarely had a day off at home, felt helpless.
Fang Qiuci, who was arranging the snacks, was so focused that she wanted to arrange them into a flower shape, “What do you know, old man? My younger daughter-in-law is coming over for the first time. Their family is well-off, so we should also buy a house in the villa area.”
Wei Jun shook the newspaper in his hand, unconcerned, “You should know Mudan’s temperament by now;
she wouldn’t care about such things.”
“I know,
but after staying at the in-laws’ place for a few days, I realized how nice their house is. I’ve worked hard all my life, and I want to enjoy my later years.”
That was true. Although his wife could make money, she had spent her life in this small space with him, which was unfair to her. Wei Jun put down the newspaper, “If you want to buy it, go ahead.”
After getting her husband’s approval, Fang Qiuci suddenly felt uneasy, “Will this be bad for you?”
Wei Jun replied, “Why would it be bad? Even if someone gets jealous and reports us, we have nothing to hide.”
Despite his words, Fang Qiuci was still hesitant, “I’ll think about it.”
“Think it over. I’m not against it. But…”
“But what?”
“Just don’t treat your two daughters-in-law differently.”
“You old fool, do I look like someone who causes trouble? I’ll treat both daughters-in-law the same.” After snapping at her husband, Fang Qiuci calculated the time and decided to wait at the entrance of the compound.
But before leaving, she didn’t forget to give the annoying old man a glare.
Wei Jun…
The police compound naturally housed the families of police officers.
And most of them were old neighbors who had known each other for many years.
For example, Deputy Director Chen’s family next door.
The two families had been neighbors for nearly five years, and their relationship was fine.
But Deputy Director Chen’s wife, Zheng Mei, would occasionally make sour remarks because Fang Qiuci could earn money and even had a housekeeper at home.
At that moment, seeing her rush out, still wearing an exquisitely beautiful cheongsam, Zheng Mei, who was strolling with her grandson, curiously walked over and asked, “What important guest is coming to your house today? You’ve been busy all morning, even busier than I am with my grandson.”
As if she didn’t have a grandson herself, Fang Qiuci didn’t have time to chat today. “My son and daughter-in-law are back.”
“Your eldest son is back?”
“It’s the younger one.”
Watching the figure already running off into the distance, Zheng Mei was surprised: “When did you get a younger daughter-in-law??”
