Chapter 52

However, when he came over with a cup of warm water and saw the girl’s face clearly, he was completely stunned.

Then, he and the equally bewildered Fang Jingjing exclaimed in unison:

“Aren’t you that unlucky person?!”

Fang Jingjing…

Luo Wei…

They left the City Bureau.

As soon as they reached a wind-sheltered corner, Wei Shian stretched out his hand toward his girlfriend.

This gesture indicated that he wanted to hold hands but left room for her to refuse.

Lu Jiu unconsciously became nervous again and instinctively looked up at him.

However, when she saw that his dark pupils reflected nothing but her image, she relaxed.

She lifted her hand and placed it on the man’s broad palm.

Wei Shian immediately tightened his grip.

Unlike the previous day when he was distracted, this time, he focused entirely on the sensation.

Her hand was soft as if boneless, delicate like jade, and even more slender than he had estimated, as if the slightest pressure might hurt her.

Lu Jiu noticed that her palm, which was being held, began to sweat, and her cheeks were gradually heating up. She tried to pull her hand away but failed. Feeling uneasy, she kept her gaze on the man’s chest and softly asked, “What… what do you want to say?”

Wei Shian, slightly mesmerized by the softness in his hand, finally understood the saying “soft as if boneless.” His throat moved as he swallowed, but his voice remained hoarse as he replied, “I plan to treat my colleagues to a meal soon. Why don’t you come along too?”

Lu Jiu blinked and quickly understood. This was like how, back in college, when a roommate was dating, they would invite friends out for a meal.

Understanding this, she readily agreed, “Sure, let me know the time.”

So obedient… Wei Shian had long noticed that while his girlfriend had a delicate and alluring appearance, her personality was very docile.

Seeing that he wasn’t speaking further, Lu Jiu said, “Can I go back now?”

Wei Shian was reluctant to let her leave. “Let me tell you about the follow-up on that robber from yesterday.”

Sure enough, Lu Jiu’s curiosity was piqued.

And so, the innocent little Peony was held by the hand for a good ten minutes.

On the way back to the shop, it finally dawned on Lu Jiu what her boyfriend’s little scheme had been. She was both amused and exasperated.

But before she could tease her friend about it, Jingjing had already started rambling:

“This is such a coincidence! Do you remember a few months ago when I told you I was tricked into a blind date by my colleague Zhu Qian? My gosh, it was with that police officer named Luo Wei! This world is way too small…”

Lu Jiu was also surprised, “It was Officer Luo?”

Fang Jingjing replied, “Yes, him. I didn’t expect it either.”

“Did he recognize you?”

“He did.” Fang Jingjing’s face darkened as she added, “He actually called me an unlucky person!!!”

Lu Jiu couldn’t help but laugh, “Didn’t you call him that behind his back?”

Fang Jingjing was momentarily speechless, then stubbornly said, “I wasn’t wrong.”

Knowing the deep bond they shared growing up together, Lu Jiu didn’t press further and reassured her friend, “You’re right.”

Satisfied, Fang Jingjing quickly added with a mischievous grin, “Let me tell you, Zhu Qian broke up with Luo Wei to climb the social ladder, but she recently got dumped by her ‘higher branch,’ and now she’s moping around every day.”

Lu Jiu shrugged, “Not surprising.”

“Right? Right? I just love it when people who do bad things get their comeuppance.”

Wei Shian scheduled the dinner for three days later.

He chose a Sichuan restaurant, Lu Jiu’s favorite.

Although they had met before, today was the official introduction.

So, Lu Jiu dressed up specifically for the occasion.

She styled her hair up, applied some makeup, and added a touch of color to her lips.

For her outfit, she chose a pink winter cheongsam that hugged her figure, and she draped a white fur cape over it.

It wasn’t an overly elaborate ensemble, and her makeup was minimal. But she was naturally beautiful, and with just a little effort, her already exquisite face looked as flawless as if carved from jade.

While waiting for her boyfriend at the restaurant, she caught the attention of many onlookers.

Even Zhao Lanlan and Little Xiao Yuanzi, who were used to seeing their boss’s beauty, couldn’t help but be amazed and hovered around her.

Naturally, as her boyfriend, Wei Shian was also captivated when he came to pick her up.

He stared intently at his girlfriend, his gaze deep and intense.

This was the first time Lu Jiu had seen such strong emotion in her boyfriend’s eyes.

It was so intense that it seemed like he wanted to devour her.

She didn’t dare to look too closely, nervously clutching her small purse, stammering, “Aren’t… aren’t we leaving?”

Wei Shian swallowed hard and replied in a low voice, “…Yes, let me take your bag.”

Lu Jiu walked over to him and handed him the small pink purse.

Seeing him take it so naturally, she discreetly let out a sigh of relief.

But before she could fully relax, her left hand was suddenly enveloped in his warm, broad palm.

Then, she found herself being led out of the restaurant by him, hand in hand.

His demeanor was one of unquestionable authority, as if it were the most natural thing in the world.

Chapter 26

Everyone at the gathering knew Wei Shian.

So there was no need for formalities or welcoming ceremonies.

Thus, when the couple entered the private room hand in hand, the room was nearly full.

Seeing them, those who had been chatting in small groups turned and started teasing:

“Well, well… Such a perfect couple, making everyone else envious.”

“Old Wei, you’re not being fair. Let me tell you all, this guy here ignored everyone who tried to set him up before. We thought he was all about work, but it turns out he just had really high standards.”

“Hey, hey, let’s not say that. Let’s leave some mystery for Old Wei in front of the lady. It took him long enough to get a girlfriend.”

As soon as that was said, everyone burst into laughter.

Don’t be fooled—while these people are meticulous and serious on the job, they’re just like anyone else when they’re off duty.

They laugh, they joke.

Wei Shian led his girlfriend to their seats, then naturally took her cape and hung it with his own down jacket before sitting beside her. Half-jokingly and half-reassuringly, he said, “Don’t mind them. They’re just a bunch of sour singles.”
