He doesn’t actually have a girlfriend! (2)
In the midst of the laughter around the table, Yue Qianling clenched her fists, and her breath forcefully blocked back.
With Gu Xun less than an arm’s length away, she could clearly feel his presence, and she seemed to hear him chuckling softly.
That sound, like a flame, roasted her all over.
Fortunately, before she could say anything, another female colleague at the table spoke up, “Exactly! When Shi Yue resigned not long ago, she told me that if she had known, she wouldn’t have left. So, I told her to come back, as long as her husband doesn’t mind.”
There was another burst of laughter at the table.
The boss had only been joking, and everyone laughed it off without really paying attention to Yue Qianling’s response.
However, Yue Qianling, unexpectedly, had her thoughts touched upon, feeling flustered and disoriented. She guiltily turned her head to the side—
In the midst of the clamor, their gazes met once again.
The sounds around her seemed to suddenly disappear.
Yue Qianling’s heartbeat accelerated, blood rushed to her head, and her cheeks shamefully turned crimson.
She was almost certain that Gu Xun had seen through her thoughts!
With such a nervous mood, Yue Qianling ate the meal without tasting a thing, feeling as if she were sitting on pins and needles.
Throughout the meal, she didn’t exchange a single word with Gu Xun, not even casting a glance in his direction.
The more she acted like this, the more she couldn’t divert her attention from Gu Xun, constantly keeping an eye on his movements.
Like a little spy, she felt mentally and physically exhausted from this meal.
Fortunately, Gu Xun seemed to be completely unconcerned about the earlier question and hadn’t spoken to her.
Finally, the meal came to an end, and there was little food left on the table.
Yue Qianling was about to find an excuse to slip away when the entire restaurant started to toast each other.
The boss was called to another table, leaving an empty seat next to Yue Qianling. Soon, a guy holding a wine glass sat down.
Yue Qianling wasn’t familiar with this person, only knowing that he was the head of the HR department. They rarely interacted, having only met a few times during the campus recruitment interviews.
But this supervisor remembered Yue Qianling.
“Yue Qianling, right?” He was flushed from drinking, casually pouring a glass of white wine in front of Yue Qianling. “I was the one who recruited you back then. I’m half a mentor, right?
He pushed the wine glass towards Yue Qianling, “Come on, let’s have a drink. Cheers!”
Although Yue Qianling could drink alcohol, it was limited to low-alcohol beer.
As for white wine, she had tried it at home once, and she only took one sip before she choked and her throat felt like it was on fire.
Now, this supervisor was asking her to drink a glass of white wine, wasn’t that like asking for her life?
“I don’t drink alcohol.”
Yue Qianling smiled, picking up another glass of juice, “I’ll have juice instead.”
“You’re just being unreasonable.”
The supervisor smiled, but there was a clear expression of dissatisfaction in his tone, “I drink white wine, and you drink juice. What kind of nonsense is this?”
“I’m sorry, but I really can’t drink.”
Yue Qianling looked at him without giving in.
This supervisor thought of himself as a leader, hadn’t had his face brushed off by an intern before, and he wasn’t happy about it.
“Everyone starts out not knowing how to do it, and today is a good opportunity, isn’t it?”
He forcefully took the juice from Yue Qianling’s hand, his actions were rough that it spilled quite a lot.
Yue Qianling quickly dodged, and only a little juice got on her clothes, but she watched as the juice splattered onto Gu Xun’s legs.
She was immediately flustered and quickly took out a tissue.
“I’m sorry, I’m sorry, quickly wipe it off.”
Gu Xun took the tissues that Yue Qianling handed to him and casually wiped the juice off his pants. When he heard Yue Qianling still apologizing, he frowned.
“What are you apologizing for?”
Yue Qianling hadn’t grasped the meaning of his words yet. On the other side, the supervisor had already pushed the wine glass into her hand.
“Come on, have one. Let’s down it in one go to deepen our connection.”
Who said about having a connection with you?
“I really can’t drink,” Yue Qianling suppressed her impatience, trying to keep her tone from being too irritable. “I’m allergic to alcohol.”
“Oh, I’ve heard too many girls use that excuse.”
This man’s brain was full of fat, and when he smiled, the flesh on his face was squeezing. “You pretty girls are good at pretending. Saying you’re allergic, but after work, you can drink more than anyone else when you go to a nightclub.”
“What nonsense are you—”
Before Yue Qianling could finish her sentence, the cup in her hand was suddenly taken away.
She turned her head in surprise and saw Gu Xun holding her cup, drinking it all in one go.
There was a loud “bang” as he placed the cup on the table.
He looked at the supervisor with a heavy gaze, his voice carrying evident dissatisfaction. “I drank it for her. Can we end this now?”
The supervisor froze for a moment, his expression was a little stiff, but he still smiled and said, “I’m drinking with Qianling, I’ll drink with you in a bit, no rush.”
Saying that, he took the cup again and started pouring the alcohol.
“You’re young and inexperienced, Uncle is teaching you how to deal with people—”
“Why don’t you go back and teach your own daughter?”
Hearing Gu Xun’s clearly displeased voice, he paused for a moment and slowly turned to look at him.
“Forcing a girl to drink makes you think you’re so cool?” He still had a calm face, but his eyes were filled with undisguised disdain and mockery. He lightly chuckled, “Or do you think she’s pretty and want to take advantage of her?”
His sinister intentions had been directly exposed, and the supervisor was completely embarrassed. His face turned red with alcohol.
But the three sentences Gu Xun spoke hit him right in the heart, leaving him unable to say a word.
Everyone at the table was looking at him as if he was a joke, except for Yue Qianling, who was silently lost in thought, her mind somewhere else.
The supervisor didn’t say a word in the end, took his own wine glass, stood up, and even slammed a chair heavily as he walked away.
At the table, others consoled Yue Qianling, “Girl, don’t bother with that kind of person. We don’t owe him anything, so there’s no need to put up with him.”
Yue Qianling forced a smile and said thank you.
Afterward, she also thanked Gu Xun.
Gu Xun didn’t say anything, just took a tissue and wiped the wine that had spilled on his clothes.
If it were before, Gu Xun stepping up for her at a time like this would make Yue Qianling ecstatic.
And, he just said she was pretty.
But now, the thought of him having a girlfriend left Yue Qianling feeling only bitterness.
Under these circumstances, his occasional displays of kindness to her became another form of torment.
Yue Qianling lowered her eyes, and her burning fingertips tightly gripped the hem of her skirt. Her mind was filled with chaotic thoughts.
Until everyone had left, Yue Qianling became more and more depressed as she walked back to her room. She took out her phone and sent a few messages to Yin Xue.
【Glutinous Rice Twist】: Today at dinner, there was a man pestering me to drink, and Gu Xun helped me fend off the alcohol.
【Glutinous Rice Twist】: He even scolded that man, making him so angry that he was about to explode.
【Glutinous Rice Twist】: If he didn’t have a girlfriend, I wouldn’t have been able to resist on the spot!
【Glutinous Rice Twist】: ? Can you reply to me? I’m annoyed.
She didn’t know what Yin Xue was doing and hadn’t replied to her messages.
Yue Qianling returned to her room feeling down and changed her clothes stained with wine and juice.
By the time she had finished all of this, her phone on the bed finally vibrated twice.
She opened it and saw that it was a message from Yin Xue.
【Yin Xue】: This is amazing!
【Yin Xue】: I just found out that Gu Xun doesn’t actually have a girlfriend!
