Miraculously Manifesting on the Road to Exile, I’m Mistaken for an Ancestor Chapter 68: A Heated Exchange

Gu Xingzhao’s words immediately shut down Lei Ping’s snide remarks.

The man standing next to Lei Ping looked up from his phone, his gaze landing on Gu Xingzhao. He was drawn to her attractive features, noticing that her great figure was evident even under a coat. Hearing that she was also someone who could earn money piqued his interest, and he couldn’t help but give her a few more glances.

“Xiaoping, is this an old classmate of yours? Aren’t you going to introduce me?”

Lei Ping quickly linked arms with the man. “Honey, this is Gu Xingzhao, my college classmate. We were in the same major.”

She then turned to Gu Xingzhao with a smile. “This is my fiancé. I’m here with him to spend the New Year with his family, and we’re getting married soon. His parents are even planning to buy me a car!”

Her words were full of pride, practically screaming, “My fiancé’s family is very wealthy.”

Gu Xingzhao pretended not to catch the underlying message. “Congratulations.”

Lei Ping, not getting the reaction she wanted, felt her enthusiasm wane. “It’s fate that we ran into each other. How about we have lunch together?”

Gu Xingzhao politely declined. “No, I have some things to take care of at home.”

She opened the car door and got in before Lei Ping could respond, waving briefly as she drove off.

As the car disappeared from view, Lei Ping’s expression soured. The smile vanished from her face, and she rolled her eyes at the retreating vehicle. “What’s she so smug about? It’s just a cheap car. Who knows whose money she used to buy it?”

The man beside her seemed surprised and frowned slightly as he looked at his girlfriend. “Weren’t you going to buy a car? Let’s head inside.”

Lei Ping’s mood brightened immediately. She clung to her boyfriend’s arm and said cheerfully, “You’re the best. Let’s go for a nice meal afterward. I found a highly-rated hot pot restaurant nearby.”

“Sure.”

As Gu Xingzhao drove, her mood remained high, unaffected by the earlier encounter. She thought to herself, “Having your own car is great—everything is so much more convenient.”

“Xiao Ting, what do you want to eat for lunch? It’s my treat today.”

Lin Ting suddenly said, “I’ll make a lot of money in the future, too.”

Gu Xingzhao was taken aback but then smiled. “Of course you will, Xiao Ting. You’re so smart. You’ll definitely make a lot of money.”

What Lin Ting didn’t say was that he wanted to earn a lot of money for Gu Xingzhao, enough so that no one would ever look down on her again. But such promises felt too distant; he didn’t dare say them out loud, afraid she would just laugh it off.

“Let’s have hot pot.”

He remembered that Gu Xingzhao liked hot pot. When they were younger, she would always eat until she was stuffed during New Year celebrations. Even after she grew up, her social media posts often featured hot pot during the holidays.

What Lin Ting didn’t know was that it wasn’t the hot pot she liked—it was the feeling of everyone gathering together to eat.

The hot pot restaurant wasn’t far, and they arrived quickly. Since it was lunchtime, the place was crowded, and they had to wait half an hour for a table.

The restaurant’s décor had a traditional style, with each table separated by screens. After scanning the menu, Gu Xingzhao handed her phone to Lin Ting. “You can order first.”

Lin Ting didn’t refuse. After a while, he handed the phone back to Gu Xingzhao.

She had planned to add a few of her favorites after he ordered, but when she looked at the order, she found that he had already selected everything she liked—spring rolls, pork belly, and even beef brisket.

She looked at Lin Ting with a hint of suspicion. He wasn’t much of a meat eater, so why had he ordered all meat?

Without saying anything, she added a few vegetables to the order and submitted it.

It took almost thirty minutes for all the dishes to arrive. By then, the restaurant had cleared out a bit.

Though Lin Ting was young, he was very considerate. Gu Xingzhao barely had to do anything but eat. Whenever her mouth got too spicy, a glass of water was already in her hand before she could ask.

Feeling the care and attention he was giving her, she couldn’t help but remark, “Xiao Ting, your future girlfriend is going to be very lucky.”

It’s rare to find a young man nowadays who is so attentive. If their dates go anything like this, he’s sure to be a hit.

Lin Ting’s hand tightened around his chopsticks. He forced a small smile and responded in a low voice, “Yeah.”

Gu Xingzhao laughed, thinking the boy was being shy.

They spent over an hour eating hot pot. When they were almost done, they paid the bill through their phones and got ready to leave. But just as they were about to stand up, they overheard a conversation behind them.

A man’s voice said, “So, what was the deal with that classmate of yours we saw earlier? It didn’t sound like you like her very much.”

A woman’s voice responded, “Her? Of course, I don’t like her. She was known for being loose in college, rumored to be kept by some old man. She doesn’t even have parents, apparently.”

Gu Xingzhao’s expression darkened. She recognized Lei Ping’s voice, and the “classmate” she was referring to was obviously her.

Lin Ting, sitting across from her, couldn’t hear clearly. Seeing Gu Xingzhao stop in her tracks and her expression turn sour, he assumed she was feeling unwell from eating too much.

The man continued, “That doesn’t seem right. She didn’t strike me as that type. She looked pretty innocent. Are you sure those aren’t just rumors?”

Lei Ping scoffed, “Innocent? She’s just good at pretending. During our college years, I saw her get out of different old men’s cars more than once. And it wasn’t always the same guy.”

“Let me tell you, a lot of guys at our school were after her, and she even flirted with guys who already had girlfriends. She’d flaunt it in front of their girlfriends, and she never let go. What a green tea*!”

“She even caused one couple to break up.”

The man sounded surprised. “I didn’t know there were people like that.”

Lei Ping sneered, “Yep, and it seems she’s still the same. Buying a car and acting like a rich lady, while probably keeping some boy toy on the side. Her personal life is still just as messy.”

Gu Xingzhao’s lips pressed into a thin line. During her college years, her Uncle Lu would occasionally visit, bringing her supplies and some cash. Sometimes, she’d go out to eat with him and his colleagues. He would often drop her off at school, and if he was busy with a case, he’d have a colleague give her a ride. Apparently, Lei Ping had seen this and started spreading rumors.

So that’s where all the gossip came from.

Now, Lin Ting had caught on. Rage flared in his eyes, and he was about to confront them, but Gu Xingzhao moved first.

She grabbed her purse and stepped around the screen, pretending to be surprised when she saw Lei Ping. “Oh, what a coincidence! Fancy running into you here!”

Lei Ping’s face turned sour. “Yeah…what a coincidence.”

Gu Xingzhao smiled and looked at the man. She walked over and sat down next to Lei Ping. “We didn’t get to chat much earlier. Mind if I join you for a bit?”

Lei Ping was about to refuse, but the man responded first. “Not at all.”

Lin Ting took the opportunity to sit down next to the man.

Gu Xingzhao looked at the man for a moment before turning to Lei Ping with a smile. “You did well this time—this boyfriend is much better than the one you had in college.”

Lei Ping stiffened, almost dropping her chopsticks. She forced a laugh and gave Gu Xingzhao a look, “Oh, don’t be silly. I was all about my studies in college. I didn’t even date anyone.”

Gu Xingzhao pretended not to notice Lei Ping’s hints and waved her off. “Ha! Who are you kidding about studying?”

“Everyone in our major knew you skipped classes and even stayed out of the dorm just to go on a date with your boyfriend on Valentine’s Day!”
