When Yun Zhiyi heard Song Xiangqing’s suggestion, he pressed his lips tightly together. He remembered that he had once mentioned wanting to open a tea shop before the New Year, and how had the old lady responded? It seemed she hadn’t said much, but she had certainly scolded him. It was clear that her own son and granddaughter were treated differently, but his feelings of jealousy were fleeting, and he didn’t let it sour his mood towards his daughter.
He was already thinking that the 20,000 yuan couldn’t be touched and that he needed to track down some old friends to chase up debts, at least to support his daughter.
Yun Tutu was warmed by her family’s care. “Grandma, keep that money. When I start making money, I’ll give you both more for your retirement.”
She knew the money her grandmother mentioned was saved for funeral expenses. Even if she currently didn’t have a job, she wouldn’t touch it.
“Just make sure you and Grandpa eat well and enjoy yourselves. If you ever need anything, just give me a call,” Yun Tutu said, now more confident because she had some money.
“We have everything we need here. You’re out there on your own without anyone to help you,” Yun Dagang took the phone. “Even if you find a low-paying job when you come home, at least we’ll all be together, and there will be a hot meal waiting for you.”
Yun Tutu stared at the ceiling, blinking, before saying, “Don’t worry, Grandpa. If I really can’t make it, I’ll come back and live off you. But I’m still young and want to give it a shot.”
After a long while, she finally managed to reassure her family. When she hung up, she found her three friends watching her.
“We can arrange a job for you,” Zhang Yaowen offered, though he hadn’t heard the phone conversation, he could guess what it was about. If his daughter were out there on her own, he’d be worried too.
“No need,” Yun Tutu already felt she had taken enough advantage, especially since they had put the house in her name. Without them, she wouldn’t know when she could ever qualify to buy a house.
“It’s only right,” Chen Yuxi said, quickly opening her laptop to report the matter.
As they continued talking, a reply came through the computer. It was just one line: “Your work ID will be delivered within an hour.”
“See? I told you it’s no big deal,” Chen Yuxi said knowingly. Considering the things Yun Tutu brought back yesterday, they were doing what was necessary.
“Oh, and regarding a certain island nation, we’re no longer just protesting. If they dare discharge those toxic waters, we’ll take strong action,” Zhang Yang said with a satisfied smile. Finally, they didn’t have to hold back anymore.
Yun Tutu was a little surprised by the speed, but she understood. After all, the apocalyptic disasters served as a clear warning.
Though they had said an hour, the work ID arrived in less than 30 minutes. Yun Tutu looked at the ID that read “Head of the Material Coordination Group,” and blinked. What did this mean?
“Material Coordination Group suits you well,” Chen Yuxi said, handing over a related contract. “Sign this agreement, and we’ll officially be colleagues.”
The contract included comprehensive insurance and a monthly salary of 100,000 yuan, plus other benefits.
“Isn’t this too much?” Yun Tutu felt it was a bit overwhelming. They had already agreed on a profit share, and now she was getting a salary too.
“Take it. You were so generous yesterday; they can’t be stingy,” Zhang Yang said, handing her a pen. “You can show this to your family so they won’t worry.”
Yun Tutu quickly understood. They couldn’t disclose what they were doing, but having a legitimate income source would put her family at ease.
“Thanks,” Yun Tutu said, signing the contract. She also decided that if she came across more advanced items like yesterday, she wouldn’t ask for a share.
After signing, she took photos of her work ID and contract and sent them to the family group chat.
The Yun family was worried and was discussing whether to visit their daughter when Yun Chuan suddenly shouted, “Quick, look at the messages in our group! My sister sent a message!”
Still in elementary school and unable to understand everything, Yun Chuan was a well-behaved child who knew to report important things.
The family quickly grabbed their phones. Yun Zhiyi snatched the phone from Yun Chuan, scolding him, “You should focus on your studies and stop playing with your parents’ phones.”
Yun Chuan looked aggrieved. “But I was the one who told you about it!”
“If you kept your mouth shut more often, you’d be doing us all a favor,” Yun Zhiyi said, clicking on the files, still scolding his son. The kid was always tattling, not cute like his sister.
“What does this mean?” Song Xiangqing put on her reading glasses and examined the document carefully. “Tutu sent over a contract. You all should look at it closely. I’ll check this work ID.”
As a long-time factory employee, Song Xiangqing looked for the official stamp on the ID. “Zhonghua##jun. District?”
She took off her glasses and rubbed her eyes, but the words were still the same. She then handed the ID to Yun Dagang. “Is our Tutu working for the government now? Wasn’t she delivering food?”
Yun Dagang thought for a moment. “Is this some kind of code? Maybe her job is similar to delivering food.”
Ye Juan and Yun Zhiyi focused on the contract, reading it several times before exchanging serious looks.
“From now on, let’s not ask Tutu too much about her work, and definitely don’t talk about it outside,” Ye Juan said, pulling Yun Chuan into the middle of the group and, for once, using his full name. “Yun Chuan, do you know what your sister does?”
“Of course! My sister delivers food. You guys even ordered from her before. When she comes back, I want her to deliver food to me too.”
Yun Zhiyi laughed, clapping his hands. “This kid has a good memory. He still remembers his sister delivers food. Alright, go back to your room and do your homework. This doesn’t concern you.”
Yun Chuan pointed to the phone in his father’s hand. “I already finished my homework. Didn’t you say I could play once I was done? I haven’t played at all today.”
“Not today. If you’re done with your homework, go read a book,” Ye Juan said sternly, taking the phone from Yun Zhiyi and deleting the group chat messages.
