As the corpses above slowly wriggled, Di Kai and Yang Guang suddenly realized something. Their expressions changed instantly, and they both raised their pistols, staring intently at the still-twitching pile of bodies without blinking.
At this moment, all three of them were fully focused on the corpse pile, and no one noticed the dark muzzle of a gun extending from a nearby makeshift room.
“There are three people, two Alphas, and the other one wearing a mask… probably an Omega,” the man with the gun said, lying by the window, licking his lips with interest. “Let’s take out those two Alphas from S District first, leave the Omega alive, and we can have some fun later.”
“Didn’t expect S District people to arrive so quickly. We haven’t even finished cleaning up the bodies yet. If the higher-ups find out, they’ll say we didn’t handle things properly again.” The other man, dressed in a lab-specific protective suit, had a glowing screen from his star brain in front of him. He was quickly uploading data, the blue stream of information flowing densely across the screen as his fingers moved swiftly and nimbly.
“They seem to have noticed,” the man muttered to himself while observing the trio through a scope.
At the same time, he narrowed his eyes and, without any hesitation, pulled the trigger.
Bang—
As the gunshot rang out, a pained scream followed.
—Yang Guang had been shot!
His upper arm was hit by a bullet, and bright red blood gushed out of the wound, quickly staining his black combat suit a deep crimson.
The alarm system in Li Po’s mind went off frantically. He immediately realized: They were being ambushed!
Without needing any reminders, the three of them quickly found a dirt mound to hide behind. Luckily, the crematorium wasn’t completely flat, and there were enough dirt piles to provide some cover.
“Tch, missed the headshot,” the man said regretfully, shifting his gaze from the gun’s sights to the person next to him, who was still inputting data.
“Useless.” The other person had just finished uploading the data. He coldly put away his star brain and picked up a shotgun leaning against the wall. “They have weapons too. What now?”
“Don’t be so harsh. I’ve been stuck in the lab for years and haven’t touched a gun in forever. Hitting anything at all is already good enough,” the man with the rifle scratched his head, grinning mischievously as he put away his gun. “Those two Alphas are armed, but the Omega isn’t. Let’s put on our bulletproof vests. I refuse to believe they can escape.”
…
Yang Guang’s arm was bleeding profusely, and his face was pale from the blood loss. He stared in the direction of the makeshift room and shouted to Di Kai, “What kind of weapons do you have? They seem to be coming out!”
Di Kai’s expression was equally grim. He hadn’t brought much in terms of weapons, just a pistol with seven bullets and a military tri-edged dagger for self-defense. As the two enemies approached, cold sweat formed on his forehead, and panic filled his eyes.
Li Po also realized the situation wasn’t good, but his face remained calm. He stayed hidden behind the dirt mound, waiting for the right moment to act.
“Try to knock their weapons away first!” Di Kai spat out a mouthful of dirt as he spoke, angrily shouting toward Yang Guang not far away.
Yang Guang gave an “OK” gesture. Meanwhile, Li Po quietly took out his pistol, ready to fire at any moment. Although he had never fired a real gun, he had spent time at official shooting ranges practicing with simulation guns. This would have to be a case of making do with what he had.
The man with the gun knew where the two Alphas were hiding, so he remained extremely cautious. His gun was aimed directly at the two men’s cover, his eyes unblinking.
Di Kai had barely poked his head out when a bullet whizzed by in the wind. His pupils dilated for a moment, and without thinking, he immediately pulled back, completely forgetting to fire his gun.
Bang—
Di Kai was quick enough, and the bullet didn’t hit him, but it did strike the dirt mound above his head, showering him with ash and soil. His mouth was instantly filled with dirt.
“Ugh, ptoo, ptoo, ptoo!”
Di Kai’s face turned completely dark as he glared at the A-grade pistol in his hand, his expression cold and grim.
In past missions, he had always been dealing with pollutants, rarely encountering sneak attacks like this, and had never been in such a deadlock. Plus, he was used to being a slacker in the squad, and couldn’t even run fast. Now, terrified by the bullets, his chubby face trembled, and he didn’t dare move, huddling like a quail.
Yang Guang, his left arm injured and tormented by pain, turned pale as he looked at Di Kai’s cowardice and closed his eyes in despair. Di Kai was at least an A-grade Alpha, yet he didn’t dare make a move. How could they count on an E-grade Omega?
Suddenly, a calm and cold voice came from nearby: “Distract them for me. I’ll shoot. Can you do that?”
Yang Guang was stunned and looked at Li Po in disbelief. The two attackers were wearing full-body bulletproof armor, completely covered, even their heads were protected by bulletproof helmets. Unless someone shot point-blank, it would be impossible to hurt them. The only way to survive was to disable their guns or injure their hands so they couldn’t fire.
But wasn’t this Omega an E-grade mental strength user? Did he even have a gun? And even if he did, how could an E-grade mental strength user handle a weapon stronger than B-grade?
Seeing the obvious doubt in Yang Guang’s eyes, Li Po quickly understood. Without hesitation, he pulled out his pistol and gave it a shake, speaking concisely: “I have privileges.”
“…”
Yang Guang was left speechless. If it were any other excuse, he wouldn’t have believed it, but this reason? He had no choice but to believe it. Most importantly, Li Po really did have a gun. At this point, Yang Guang could only give it a try. If it worked, it might be their only chance.
Yang Guang was positioned between Di Kai and Li Po, and soon, he relayed Li Po’s plan to Di Kai. Di Kai’s first reaction was disbelief. Privileges? What a joke. That might fool Yang Guang, but not him.
But then, something clicked in his mind, and his face stiffened.
The memory of the armory flashed before his eyes like a carousel, and as the image became clearer, he felt a sharp pain between his legs—could it be that this Omega wasn’t an E-grade mental strength user after all? Did he have a hidden trump card all along?
Suddenly, his gaze shifted, and the gloom in his expression relaxed as he agreed to cooperate with Yang Guang. After all, he wasn’t going to stick his neck out. If they failed, Yang Guang would be the one to die, not him.
The three quickly reached a temporary agreement.
Li Po calmly gripped his pistol and gestured to Yang Guang.
Three, two, one!
The moment the countdown hit one, Yang Guang’s eyes sharpened, and he swiftly popped his head out, firing several shots at the attackers.
Sure enough, the two attackers’ attention immediately shifted to Yang Guang. One of them quickly fired back at Yang Guang’s position, while the other remained on guard, watching Di Kai’s spot to prevent a sneak attack.
In their minds, Omegas didn’t carry guns and couldn’t cause any trouble. So, their focus remained on the two Alphas, only sparing a glance at Li Po.
This was exactly what Li Po was waiting for!
He calmly gripped his gun, and without hesitation, popped out of cover. While the two attackers hadn’t yet reacted, he aimed the muzzle at the right-hand man’s wrist.
He had excellent eyesight, and his hand didn’t tremble. With a calm and determined expression, he pulled the trigger.
Bang—!
Right after firing, he didn’t waste a moment, quickly ducking back into cover like a flash of lightning.
The sound of a bullet slicing through the air and a heavy object hitting the ground came simultaneously. Hiding behind the mound, Li Po let out a sigh of relief.
He hit the target.
