Chapter 278: Offering Sacrifices and Showing Gratitude
Over the years, many people had left the farm to return to the city, but a small number of people still remained to work there. Luo Qiao walked to the gatehouse and peeked inside.
Seeing the people inside, she called out, “Uncle Qin!”
The person inside heard the call and looked over. After recognizing Luo Qiao, he said, “You’re Luo Qiao, the eldest daughter from the second branch’s Luo family.”
Luo Qiao smiled and replied, “Yes, it’s me. I’m glad Uncle Qin remembers me.”
Uncle Qin, smiling broadly, came out to greet her. “You’ve changed a lot. It seems you’ve been doing well back in the city.”
Luo Qiao, someone who never forgot a grudge, did not hide the truth about Luo Tianming. She explained her situation to Uncle Qin.
Uncle Qin slapped his thigh and said, “So the Luo Tianming mentioned in the newspaper is your father—oh, no, your adoptive father?”
Luo Qiao nodded.
Uncle Qin murmured, “No wonder. It all makes sense now. Luo Tianming and his wife were really no good.”
Looking at the significantly changed Luo Qiao, he asked, “Are you here to pay respects to your grandmother?”
Luo Qiao nodded, “Yes, I’ve come to pay respects to my grandmother. Without her, I might not have made it.”
Uncle Qin responded, “It’s right to come back and pay your respects. Grandma Luo protected you a lot over the years. But now, you’ve found your real parents, and better days are ahead.”
Luo Qiao bid farewell to Uncle Qin and did not enter the farm. Instead, she took a small path to her grandmother’s grave. After about half an hour of walking, she arrived at the site.
Luo Qiao placed the bowl of wontons, which she had bought with her own money from the wonton stall, in front of her grandmother’s grave. The outer cowhide bag was already damp.
She had only retrieved the wontons from her space just before getting off the vehicle, otherwise, the soup would likely have been gone by the time she arrived.
Luo Qiao took out a can and some candies from her bag, lit candles, burned some paper offerings, and bowed to her grandmother’s grave. Then she quietly spoke about the events of the past few months.
Luo Qiao gave a bow to her grandmother’s grave and said, “Grandma, I’m leaving now. I’ll visit you again when I have time. Thank you for protecting me all those years.”
After Luo Qiao left, some children who were going up the mountain to cut grass saw the offerings at the grave. No one minded that it was an offering, they happily shared and ate the food.
Luo Qiao went to the place where the original owner used to live. The old house had now been given to someone else. Even though things had changed a lot over the past few months, some people still recognized her.
As more and more people gathered around, Luo Qiao took out candies from her bag to share with those who came. When they learned that Luo Qiao had returned to pay respects to the Luo family’s grandmother, they all praised her as a good child.
Some invited Luo Qiao to their homes for lunch, but she declined, saying she still needed to visit the farm office and catch a train later, so she thanked them for their kindness.
When Luo Qiao arrived at the farm office, she saw Manager Zhang looking over documents. She gently knocked on the door and heard a voice from inside saying, “Come in.”
Luo Qiao entered, and Manager Zhang was stunned for a moment before asking, “Which family’s daughter are you?”
Luo Qiao smiled and replied, “Manager Zhang, don’t you remember me? I’m Luo Qiao.”
In the original owner’s memory, Manager Zhang was a just and fair person who had helped her a few times. Since it was not easy to come this far, she wanted to thank him for his past kindness.
Manager Zhang asked, “Are you Luo Qiao from Grandma Luo’s family?”
Luo Qiao smiled and said, “Yes.”
Manager Zhang stood up and looked Luo Qiao over, saying, “You’ve really changed a lot. It’s amazing how much you’ve changed. Are you here to pay respects to your grandmother?”
Luo Qiao smiled and replied, “Yes, I’ve come to pay respects to my grandmother and to visit the people at the farm.”
She then took out several jars of mushroom meat sauce and the two bags of brown sugar from the canvas bag that Lu Yichen had given her. She said, “Manager Zhang, thank you for your protection all these years. Please don’t refuse these items. It’s my way of showing gratitude.”
Manager Zhang said, “I haven’t done much. You really don’t need to remember it so seriously.”
Luo Qiao smiled faintly and replied, “It may not seem like much to you, but to me, it’s a tremendous favor.”
She then gave a bow to Manager Zhang and said, “Thank you.”
