The sudden kiss on the cheek left Yu Jinxiao momentarily stunned.
His two sons had always been reserved since childhood. They never cheered for him, never hugged him, and certainly never kissed him to express affection.
Yu Yuanyuan, however, was different. She always conveyed her emotions openly and without reservation.
The little bundle of joy happily grabbed some cookies and went off to find Ding Miaomiao. The two of them found an empty step, sat down, and began munching away, their small, content backs huddled together like two little hamsters enjoying a meal.
“Mr. Yu, would you like a wet wipe?” Gao Zhou, ever thoughtful, offered an unopened pack of disinfectant wipes from the car. He knew that although Miss Yuanyuan was quite endearing, Mr. Yu had a slight obsession with cleanliness and was physically averse to such close contact.
Yu Jinxiao, with his long, slender fingers, tore open the package and pulled out a wipe, dabbing at his chin with an expression of disdain. “She just ate and then touched my face with her hands full of crumbs.”
“Yes, yes,” Gao Zhou nodded mechanically in agreement.
But secretly, he was envious—how adorable! He never received such treatment. Cue sad face.
As Yu Jinxiao wiped the crumbs away, he deliberately avoided the spot where Yuanyuan had kissed him, carefully cleaning everywhere else.
Wow, a miracle!
Gao Zhou’s eyes widened in surprise.
“Zhouzhou, why don’t you come over and take some? Everyone gets a cookie,” Teacher Li called out to a few boys with a smile. “These were bought by Mr. Yu.”
Zhouzhou and the others lowered their heads, nervously twisting their fingers. “We used to bully Yuanyuan, so we can’t eat anything bought by Uncle Yu.”
Teacher Li was taken aback and glanced at Yu Jinxiao, somewhat surprised.
Everyone at the orphanage knew that Yu Jinxiao was going to adopt Yuanyuan, and everyone was happy that she was being taken in by a good family.
“You little rascals…” Yu Jinxiao suddenly stood up, brushing off the crumbs from his clothes.
Zhouzhou and the others were so terrified that their faces contorted in fear. “W-We really won’t eat it, Uncle Yu, please don’t be mad!”
Yu Jinxiao: “…” He hadn’t even said anything yet!
Was he really that scary?
“This is your favorite cookie, isn’t it?” Yuanyuan suddenly appeared, holding two large packs, which she stuffed into Zhouzhou’s arms. “Eat the cookies, but from now on, no more bullying little kids, okay?”
Zhouzhou stared at the cookies, gulping, and nodded earnestly. “I won’t! From now on, I’ll be a good boy!”
“Pinky promise.”
The two children hooked their pinkies and laughed together.
“All right, say goodbye to everyone. We’re heading home,” Yu Jinxiao said, still unsure how he’d ended up spending so much time here.
His schedule used to be meticulously planned, always rushing from one task to the next. He had never spent his time on what he considered trivial matters like this.
But slowing down from a hectic life didn’t feel too bad after all.
“Miaomiao, I’m going home with Daddy now,” Yuanyuan stretched out her short, chubby arms, trying hard to give Miaomiao a big hug. “I’ll come back to visit everyone! You have to miss me, okay? You definitely have to miss me!”
Ding Miaomiao’s eyes turned red, and she sniffled before whispering, “Then… Yuanyuan, can I use the stuff on your bed?”
“Ah… Daddy bought that,” Yuanyuan hesitated, then turned to Yu Jinxiao, seeking his opinion with her eyes.
“You don’t need to look at me. It was bought for you, so it’s your decision,” Yu Jinxiao threw the decision back to her.
Without hesitation, Yuanyuan nodded and grabbed Ding Miaomiao’s hand, declaring, “What’s yours is mine, so you can use it all you want!”
“Thank you, Yuanyuan, you’re the best!” Ding Miaomiao excitedly hugged her and kissed her on the cheek several times.
Watching this exchange, Yu Jinxiao couldn’t help but feel that something was off.
What’s yours is mine?
Didn’t she get that backward?
These two little girls were clearly talking on completely different wavelengths, yet somehow they understood each other perfectly!
