Chapter 283: A Strong Retort
Luo Qiao replied gracefully, “Yes, I’m Luo Qiao.”
The girl circled around Luo Qiao and said, “You really are quite pretty. No wonder you pushed Jianing away.”
Hearing this, Luo Siyuan exploded in anger, “Qiao Meng, watch your mouth! Our family matters have nothing to do with you.”
The girl named Qiao Meng, retorted, “Your family raised Jianing for fifteen years. Couldn’t you have afforded to keep her for a few more? Was what happened back then really Jianing’s fault? Why did you have to send her to the countryside?”
Luo Siyuan snapped, “I’ll say it again, Qiao Meng, this is our family’s business, not yours. Don’t forget, my sister suffered for so many years because of Zhao Jianing’s biological parents.
If Jianing is innocent, does that mean my sister deserved all the hardship? Jianing enjoyed fifteen years of comfort in my sister’s place while my sister endured all the suffering. Haven’t you read the news? Are you blind, or just heartless?”
Qiao Meng responded, “What does that have to do with Jianing? She’s a victim in all this too. Have you ever thought about how she might not be able to handle life in the countryside after growing up in the capital?”
Just as Luo Siyuan was about to argue back, Luo Qiao smiled faintly and asked, “Are you Zhao Jianing’s good friend?”
Qiao Meng said, “Yes, we are best sisters. Don’t think that just because you’re Uncle Luo’s real daughter, I’ll be nice to you.”
Luo Qiao smiled, “Judging by your outfit, it seems like your family is quite well-off, right?”
Feeling proud, Qiao Meng haughtily replied, “What does that have to do with you?”
Luo Qiao chuckled, “Since you’re such a good sister to Zhao Jianing and willing to cause trouble on her behalf, and since your family is so well-off, why don’t you just take her in to live with you? Wouldn’t that be the best solution?”
Qiao Meng’s face immediately darkened, and without thinking, she blurted, “Why should I take her in?”
Luo Qiao laughed, “So, it turns out you two are just superficial friends. You’re only offering verbal support, thinking you can bully me because I’m from the countryside. I thought you lived by the sea.”
Qiao Meng’s face flushed with anger, “What do you mean by that?”
Luo Qiao mockingly said, “You’re overstepping. If you truly care about her, why don’t you take her in and raise her yourself? Otherwise, don’t bother talking nonsense.”
After saying this, she was about to leave when she added, “Oh, by the way, I forgot to mention why Zhao Jianing was sent away so quickly. It’s because she tried to steal money from the Luo family and even hit the mother who raised her for fifteen years with a lamp.
That’s why she was sent off in a hurry. Such behavior… tsk tsk. And you two are still friends? Well, they say [1]“Birds of a feather flock together” is an idiom that means people with similar interests, characteristics, or behaviors tend to associate with each other. After finishing, Luo Qiao shook her head and turned to leave. She didn’t think what she said was unfair to Zhao Jianing—after all, her friend had come looking for trouble first. Fine, then, let’s hurt each other.
Qiao Meng wanted to rush up and argue with Luo Qiao, but she remembered her aunt’s warning. In the end, she didn’t have the courage to chase after her. If she had done so, Luo Siyuan would surely not have let her go.
The group of people standing behind Qiao Meng had now witnessed the fierceness of this newly reunited daughter of the Luo family. Without uttering a single curse, she had scolded Qiao Meng so harshly it was as if she’d been drenched in insults.
The youngest son of the factory director, Yuan Zihao, and the grandson of the Party Secretary, Yan Jiapeng, exchanged a glance. They now had a higher opinion of Luo Qiao—she was definitely not someone to be trifled with.
After casting a glance at Qiao Meng, who was fuming and on the verge of tears, they turned away disdainfully and walked off. One of the girls who had come with Qiao Meng reminded her, “Qiao Meng, let’s go. If we wait any longer, we won’t catch up. Zihao and Jiapeng have already gone far ahead.”
Qiao Meng glared bitterly at Luo Qiao and the others walking away. This grudge was definitely going to stick.
What she didn’t realize was that her companions were already feeling disappointed with her actions. They were now discussing the matter of Zhao Jianing stealing money, intentionally distancing themselves from Qiao Meng.
Qiao Meng was beyond frustrated. Not only had she failed to humiliate Luo Qiao, but she had also embarrassed herself in the process. What a bad luck.
Qiao Meng’s original intention wasn’t even to defend Zhao Jianing. She wanted to stand up for her in front of everyone to show how considerate she was of her friends. Instead, she’d ended up losing face.
