The teachers, eyes red, hugged Yuanyuan tightly. To avoid making the farewell too sad, everyone forced smiles and waved at the little girl.
The children from the orphanage followed the teachers to the entrance. Some were too young to understand what parting meant, still sucking on their fingers in confusion.
They only knew that today they got to eat something delicious and receive new gifts—all thanks to that tall, handsome man!
“Thank you… Uncle!” One child started, and soon a chorus of little voices followed, “Thank you, Uncle, for the bread… it was yummy!”
“Thank you, Uncle, for the cookies!”
“Thank you, Uncle, for the books!”
“Thank you, Uncle, for the fruit… slurp.”
“Thank you, toys, for the Uncle… wait, thank you for the toys, Uncle!”
The children’s sweet, high-pitched voices filled the air, as they waved enthusiastically at Yu Jinxiao’s back, thanking him.
Their genuine joy caught the attention of passing strangers, who turned to watch the scene in surprise.
Their sparkling eyes, so pure and sincere, expressed the most heartfelt gratitude.
Yu Jinxiao, who had never been treated like this before, felt uncomfortable. He awkwardly tried to drag Yuanyuan to the car.
But the little one wasn’t having it and tugged on his arm, bringing up the issue at the worst possible moment: “Daddy, aren’t you going to say goodbye to everyone?”
“Get in the car.” Yu Jinxiao bent down and gently nudged the sticky little girl toward the vehicle.
Yuanyuan pointed back to the children watching them, confused, “But we’re leaving. Shouldn’t we say goodbye?”
Gao Zhou had already gotten in the car, leaving Yu Jinxiao to handle the persistent little girl alone.
For nearly two minutes, the tall man and the small child stood there in a standoff. Yu Jinxiao could feel a headache coming on. With a resigned sigh, he turned, waved stiffly at the group of children, and promptly scooped Yuanyuan up, gently placing her in the back seat.
Opening the door, Yu Jinxiao paused. A child seat? Where had this come from?
Sensing his boss’s confusion, Gao Zhou grinned and explained cheerfully, “I figured Miss Yuanyuan might need one in the future, so I went ahead and bought it while picking up other things.”
“Hmm, good thinking.”
Although it sounded like praise, Gao Zhou felt a chill down his spine.
Yu Jinxiao switched to the other side, sitting by the window, silently gazing outside.
In the child seat, Yuanyuan couldn’t stop wiggling, happily singing, “Lalala, Yuanyuan is going home with Daddy! Yuanyuan is Daddy’s little baby!”
The tune was something Yuanyuan had made up, but it was strangely catchy. Halfway through the drive, even Gao Zhou found himself humming along.
Yu Jinxiao: “…” Maybe I’m just not childish enough to fit in with you two.
As the car entered the quiet villa district, the surroundings became more serene.
This was the most expensive residential area in Jiangcheng, and Yu Jinxiao’s villa was the largest, most luxurious, and best-located property in the entire neighborhood. Tucked away in a quiet, scenic spot, the lush greenery was carefully maintained, with bridges and flowing streams. Every corner looked like it could be a picture-perfect wallpaper.
When they had arrived last night, it was too dark for Yuanyuan to see anything. Now, she was glued to the window, wide-eyed in amazement.
“Daddy, there’s a fountain over there!!!”
“Wow, Daddy, look at that big, big tree!!”
“The flowers are so pretty!”
Every detail of the villa district left Yuanyuan in awe.
Yu Jinxiao had originally considered buying an estate, but with his two sons still young, he thought it’s better for them to grow up with kids their own age. There were plenty of children in this villa community, with his younger son, Yu Yingze, being the leader of the local pack, gathering to play every day after school.
Yu Jinxiao was always busy with work and seldom had time to spend with his children. He didn’t want to raise them in an isolated estate where they might grow up lonely—it wouldn’t be good for their mental health.
As the car came to a stop, Yu Jinxiao helped Yuanyuan out and led her to the front door. The servants, seeing them return, were stunned.
The emotional farewell from earlier was still fresh in their minds—so why were they back already?
“I’ve officially adopted Yuanyuan. From this moment on, she’s a member of our family.” Yu Jinxiao’s announcement was so shocking that one passing servant tripped, falling to the floor and forgetting to get back up.
