A child’s innocent voice echoed, pure and sweet, as if stating something incredibly simple.
Yu Yuanyuan tilted her head up, curiously gazing into the man’s eyes. Her bright, jewel-like eyes radiated a strange warmth.
The man felt as if his heart had been enveloped in a soft, gentle light.
The tension, pain, despair, and regret that had been weighing on him seemed to wash away in an instant, leaving his mind at peace.
“Yes, when you make a mistake, you should correct it, but…” the man choked, unable to continue.
He hadn’t wanted to make this wrong choice, but he felt he had no other option.
His gravely ill daughter needed expensive medical treatments. If only he could get his hands on the company’s confidential documents, he’d receive the payment that would cover it all.
Despite his careful planning, he’d been caught. That’s why he was in this situation now.
The man knew there was no escaping today, but the thought of his daughter struggling to stay alive in the hospital tore at his heart.
“But what? Did something bad happen, Mister?” the little girl asked curiously.
“Money. I need money. A lot of money.”
“Oh, I see,” Yu Yuanyuan nodded, half understanding. She was too young to fully grasp the concept of money. “Maybe Yuanyuan can help you.”
With that, she raised her chubby little hand and patted the man on the head.
She placed her tiny fist against her knee and lightly tapped his head, as if afraid there wasn’t enough luck, so she added a few extra pats.
“All done! You should get lots and lots of money soon,” Yu Yuanyuan stood up proudly, her small, straight figure striking a confident pose. “But you can’t do bad things anymore! You have to… you have to be a good person!”
The man looked at the innocent eyes before him and was at a loss for words.
He knew this was just a child’s way of offering comfort.
A sweet, innocent, yet ultimately futile attempt to console him.
And yet, something inside him stirred. Thinking about his daughter lying in that hospital bed, a surge of determination welled up within him, sparking a new plan.
“Mr. Yu, please give me one more chance,” the man turned toward Yu Jinxiao, supporting his body on his knees. “I don’t want to die. If I die, no one will be left to help my daughter. I’ll return the documents—I haven’t handed them over yet.”
Yu Jinxiao stared coldly at the man, his gaze so sharp it sent chills down everyone’s spine.
The man kneeling on the ground gritted his teeth, refusing to avoid the piercing gaze.
No matter how terrifying the look, it couldn’t break his resolve to change his fate.
“Alright, I’ll give you one chance,” Yu Jinxiao announced loud enough for everyone to hear, then leaned closer to the man’s ear and whispered, “But only because of that little one over there. This is your last chance.”
The man nodded gratefully, his eyes reddening. “I understand.”
Standing between them, the little girl tilted her head in confusion.
The adults’ conversation was so hard to understand!
Two of Yu Jinxiao’s men untied the man. He had been kneeling for so long that he wobbled unsteadily as he stood. A piece of paper fluttered to the ground from his clothing.
The little girl quickly grabbed it with her small hands, holding it up high. “Mister, your paper fell!”
“Huh, buying lottery tickets at a time like this?” one of the men glanced at the paper and snickered. It was a lottery ticket, and he mocked the man for it.
The man hadn’t intended to take it, but seeing the girl’s expectant eyes, he couldn’t refuse.
Taking the lottery ticket, he suddenly felt as though this thin slip of paper was more than just a piece of luck—it felt like a gift.
“A friend gave it to me,” he replied, returning the mocking smirk.
With a respectful nod toward Yu Jinxiao, the man dragged his exhausted body toward the darkness of the beach.
Yu Jinxiao watched the man’s retreating figure, deep in thought, when suddenly his phone rang.
He answered it, and on the other end was Gao Zhou’s panicked voice, almost in tears.
“Mr. Yu, Yuanyuan… Miss Yuanyuan… she’s gone!!!”
Yu Jinxiao remained expressionless. “Oh, I know.”
Gao Zhou clutched the phone in shock, trembling with cold sweat.
“She’s right here beside me.”
