The little girl’s voice was thin and shaky, causing Mrs. Yang’s eyes to redden immediately. After calling him “brother,” Yang Yuyi carefully climbed out of her father’s arms and walked over to Ji Chenai. She hugged his leg just as she had done the day she was rescued and softly repeated, “Brother.”
Ji Chenai gently patted her head. He wished he could pick up this little girl and comfort her, but…
Mrs. Yang suddenly asked, “Mr. Zhou, if you don’t mind me asking, what happened to your leg…?”
Ji Chenai looked down at Yang Yuyi and didn’t seem bothered by the question. “It happened when I was a child. It can’t be cured.”
Mr. Yang continued, “The people responsible will pay the price, especially that woman who was caught using Yuyi to beg.”
Yang Yuyi, who had been clinging silently to Mr. Yang, suddenly turned and looked at Ji Chenai sitting in his wheelchair. In a soft voice, she called out again, “Brother.”
Madam Yang’s eyes softened with pity, but she said nothing more. She had considered, if it were possible, helping Ji Chenai get the best treatment, thinking maybe his leg could still be healed.
After some more conversation, Mr. Yang and his family prepared to leave. Before the police officer departed with them, he privately gave Ji Chenai a few warnings. He expressed concern that Ji Chenai might face retaliation, explaining that the woman Ji Chenai had helped apprehend was part of a large trafficking organization, possibly even involving insiders within the police department. He urged Ji Chenai to be vigilant and to contact the police immediately if anything seemed off.
Ji Chenai responded politely to the officer’s concern, agreeing to be cautious. When the police finally left, they kindly shut the door for him.
Ji Chenai returned to the living room, picked up the bank card, and placed it in his drawer.
Not long after they left, Zhou Yaoqin came home, carrying freshly bought groceries. Seeing Ji Chenai sitting in the living room watching TV, he asked, “Brother, do you want some congee?”
Ji Chenai replied, “Anything is fine.”
Zhou Yaoqin asked, “Don’t just say ‘anything.’… I’m asking what you prefer.”
Ji Chenai said, “Then let’s have congee.”
Hearing this, Zhou Yaoqin happily went to prepare the congee. However, Ji Chenai added, “The little girl’s family came by today.”
Zhou Yaoqin paused mid-step, “Oh? You opened the door for them?”
Ji Chenai gave a hmm.
Zhou Yaoqin frowned, “Brother, in the future if someone like that shows up, have them call me first. Even if they come to thank you, don’t open the door to strangers.”
Ji Chenai understood that Zhou Yaoqin was just worried about his safety, so he responded casually.
