Chapter 473: Fallen Petals Are Not Heartless Things
Even if Madam Yu were to say ‘Demon Lord Gu Qingcheng’, Ye Wenxin would still bring her over. With this thought in mind, she eagerly awaited Madam Yu’s answer.
Madam Yu looked startled, then instinctively patted Ye Wenxin’s head and said with a smile, “I’ve really troubled you, Xin’er. My intention in telling you all this, was not to have you do anything for me.”
There was a hint of comfort in her expression. After they had cleared up the previous misunderstanding, and the relationship between the two had solidified, Madam Yu no longer put up any defenses. Moreover, Ye Wenxin wasn’t just a partner to Green Isle Manor, but also both a mentor and a friend.
There was an even deeper, indescribable bond that had developed between them. Ye Wenxin thought that the feeling could encompass almost anything, apart from love.
“But, Godmother, don’t you have any wishes you want to fulfill? Look, Fairy Fengya wants to ascend to immortality, my master wants to play at being a sect leader, and even Fatty is hoping to get a wife and have a bunch of little piglets.”
Ye Wenxin thought of the people around her. Fairy Fengya seemed to be without desires, but that was only because she had too strong of a desire for immortality.
Although Jin Xiaoqin appeared carefree and bold, she was actually quite meticulous, and her understanding of the bigger picture made her far more suitable to become the Azure Wings Sect’s leader than its current Sect Master, that old fox. Unfortunately, Jin Xiaoqin’s master didn’t favor her, and handed the position to her junior brother instead.
“You certainly know a lot,” Madam Yu said, somewhat surprised. Whether it was Fairy Fengya’s single-minded pursuit of immortality, or Jin Xiaoqin’s ambition, these were things Madam Yu had never heard before. But precisely because Ye Wenxin was speaking her heart, a thought began to stir in Madam Yu’s mind—a figure dressed in red.
She shouldn’t be thinking of it, but she couldn’t help herself. Someone so similar to that person was standing in front of her, and seeing her stirred ripples in Madam Yu’s heart.
But she couldn’t say it aloud—this was a secret that belonged to her and that person. Even though it seemed like that person had already forgotten those days, she still lived forever within that memory.
“Godmother, are you alright?” Seeing Madam Yu lost in thought, Ye Wenxin worried she might have been a little forceful. After all, her current attitude made it seem like she’d already decided Madam Yu was beyond saving, and was asking if she had any final wishes.
“It’s nothing… I just thought of an old acquaintance, and suddenly felt that maybe I should give it a try,” Madam Yu responded with a smile. A gentle breeze blew through her long hair and lifted it, revealing a glimpse of the melancholy in her eyes.
The fragility that radiated from within evoked pity in others. But if one looked into Madam Yu’s eyes, they would see her resolve.
After she heard this, Ye Wenxin already knew who Madam Yu wanted to meet, but she pretended to be curious. Madam Yu’s lips parted slightly as she said, “Come a bit closer; there are too many people around here.”
There was certainly no shortage of experts at this inn. Ye Wenxin immediately thought of Fairy Fengya, and then several other acquaintances of hers with high cultivation. If they heard that the person Madam Yu wanted to meet was Demon Lord Gu Qingcheng, they would probably be furious.
Even though Demon Lord Gu Qingcheng only existed in stories now, the divide between the immortal sects and the demon sects still remained.
The minor character Ye Wenxin obediently leaned closer.
Breath tickled her ear, making it slightly itchy. Madam Yu’s body carried a fragrance that was irresistibly intoxicating. While Liu Churan exuded a fierce femininity, her elder sister, Madam Yu, possessed a tender, comforting charm.
Ye Wenxin’s face showed disbelief—not because the sisters were so different, but because of Madam Yu’s answer.
“I want to see my younger sister.”
She had expected that the person Madam Yu most wanted to meet would be Demon Lord Gu Qingcheng. However, Madam Yu ended up choosing Liu Churan, the sister bound to her by blood. Ye Wenxin felt as though she had been overthinking things. Even if she had shared a night of passion with Madam Yu, that was more than ten years ago. Any intense feelings would have long since faded, especially in a moment like this.
“Miss Liu, huh? I’ll see what I can do,” Ye Wenxin replied, frowning slightly as she thought of the complications. Recently, Liu Churan had been aggressively attacking other demon sects, upsetting the power balance. Given the situation, it would be really difficult to arrange a meeting between Madam Yu and Liu Churan.
“You really took it seriously,” Madam Yu said upon seeing the seriousness in Ye Wenxin’s expression. She couldn’t help but smile even more warmly, and felt that the best decision she had ever made was taking Ye Wenxin in as her goddaughter.
“How could I not take your words seriously, Godmother? If it’s something I can do, I will do my utmost to accomplish it.” Ye Wenxin managed a small smile. While she might not be able to pluck the stars and the moon from the sky, she could still do many things.
In this world, strength determined everything. Although Ye Wenxin was far from being the most powerful, she was not to be underestimated either. Unless Fairy Fengya lost her mind, Ye Wenxin would live with a proud smile on her face.
“Thank you so much, Xin’er, but you really don’t need to worry too much. When I am gravely ill, my sister will naturally come to see me.” A miserable smile flashed across Madam Yu’s face, and Ye Wenxin immediately understood why.
Once a member of the Liu Clan died, it was customary to return their body to the Wind and Moon Palace, and place it in the ice chamber for preservation. However, the ice chamber had completely collapsed during an enemy invasion, and it took almost a decade to restore it.
Bodies of the Liu Clan ancestors had long been lost by then, so if Madam Yu were to die, she might very well be the first to rest in that ice chamber once more.
Ye Wenxin involuntarily shivered. Madam Yu also didn’t dare elaborate on the Liu Clan’s strange customs, so she shifted the conversation to the recent state of things.
Three of the Ten Great Immortal Sects had been destroyed. It was expected that three new sects would be chosen within the year to fill the vacancies, and collectively resist the rising power of the demon sects. A war would inevitably break out between the immortal sects and demon sects, and considering the immortal sects’ thinking, they would follow the demon sects’ example by planting a few undercover agents.
Ye Wenxin listened to this as if it had nothing to do with her. Demon sects like the Wind and Moon Palace, Shura Hall, and even the Tower of Unfettered Dreams, were already rather familiar with her face, so it was impossible for her to be assigned such an unfortunate task.
However, she couldn’t help but wonder why Madam Yu suddenly brought up the subject of the Ten Great Immortal Sects’ meetings.
“From the way they talked, they seem to think you’d be suitable for the task, Xin’er,” Madam Yu finally revealed her conclusion. Ye Wenxin was incredulous. She felt like a ball being kicked around, only to be sent right back home in the end.
“I don’t have any acting skills, and many people from the demon sects have already seen me. It would be really hard for me to blend in.”
Ye Wenxin thought that she would be completely useless as an undercover agent. Everyone would be on guard around her, making it impossible for her to gather any valuable information.
Besides, she was still technically Demon Lord Gu Qingcheng. How could she infiltrate her own faction?
