Chapter 28
Since it was Shi Tang’s party, the atmosphere was as wild as possible, with thumping music and an endless supply of alcohol.
As the music played and bodies moved, it felt like social classes and status disappeared.
Jiang Nan was the star of the party, and everyone revolved around her. She navigated the socializing effortlessly, responding to everyone’s words with ease, making appropriate jokes here and there, like the perfect example of a poised and charismatic lady.
Ling Yaqiong always criticized Lin Yuxi for being too introverted and unsocial. She probably favored someone like Jiang Nan gracious and smooth with everyone.
Yu Jiaxiao, who loved these kinds of events, quickly mingled with the crowd, completely forgetting her original reason for coming.
Lin Yuxi, who didn’t dance, found a quiet spot away from the crowd. Just as she sat down, she felt someone’s gaze on her.
Turning her head, she saw Tan Xingchen on the other side of the L-shaped sofa, with one leg in a cast propped on the armrest. He looked like a farmer waiting for a rabbit, his face practically saying, “Gotcha!”
“I tried to hang out with you, but you ignored me, saying you needed to rest at home. Yet here you are at a party!”
Lin Yuxi glanced at her. “Does your nurse know you snuck out?”
“Uh”
Tan Xingchen immediately pouted and tried to look pitiful. “I just wanted to hang out with you.”
Coming to Jiang Nan’s party to hang out with her how original.
Lin Yuxi smirked. “Why don’t you head to the White House and sing the national anthem while you’re at it?”
Tan Xingchen:
Not far away, Jiang Nan was chatting with someone who asked, “I heard from Shi Tang that you’re back for good this time. Have you finally decided to return to the motherland?”
“Couldn’t help it. I got tired of American food,” Jiang Nan replied. “Chinese food is still the best.”
“I was wondering why Second Young Master Zhou left Wall Street and suddenly came back to China. So, he came back for you.”
Lin Yuxi paused for a moment when she heard this.
Her doubts from the past few days were finally answered.
So, Zhou Yanjing’s decision to return to China was because Jiang Nan was coming back.
He followed her to the U.S., and now he was following her back. He was truly devoted.
Jiang Nan tucked a strand of hair behind her ear. The proud eldest daughter, who had just returned from her polished stint in America, actually blushed at the mention of a certain someone.
She glanced outside. “Don’t say that. Yanjing isn’t the type to act purely on emotion.”
Following her gaze, Lin Yuxi looked outside.
In the garden, where the late autumn flowers were still well-maintained, clusters of roses bloomed.
Zhou Yanjing stood beside some Constance roses, his left hand in his pocket while holding a phone in his right, talking.
Busy as ever, the Second Young Master Zhou still managed to find time to attend this party. If that wasn’t love, what was it?
Whether it was Zhou Yanjing’s sharp instincts or just coincidence, he suddenly turned to look inside.
“Wow, he’s looking at you!” a woman next to Jiang Nan exclaimed.
“You two are so in sync. We were just talking about him, and he somehow sensed it.”
Jiang Nan exchanged a glance with him through the glass, the sweetness between them practically overflowing. “Oh, stop teasing me.”
At that moment, Lin Yuxi realized what it felt like to be an NPC watching someone else’s love story unfold.
In her heart, she had to admit that Jiang Nan and Zhou Yanjing were a perfect match.
A talented man and a beautiful woman, from families that were well-matched. Though the Jiang family wasn’t as deeply rooted as the Zhou family, they were still one of the top families in Lin City.
She still remembered that night in their senior year of high school when she came home and saw Zhou Yanjing and Jiang Nan standing under a streetlight.
Zhou Yanjing lazily had his hands in his pockets, and Jiang Nan stepped forward to hug him. The orange-yellow light illuminated the young couple in love.
Later, Lin Yuxi heard from others that they were dating, and both families were pleased with the match.
Tan Xingchen, no doubt, was on Jiang Nan’s side, but she had recently taken a liking to Lin Yuxi. Sensing her discomfort, she worried Lin Yuxi might be hurt by what she’d overheard.
“Honestly, you should just get a divorce from Yanjing.”
Just then, Yu Jiaxiao walked over and heard this comment.
She had also been hoping for Lin Yuxi to free herself from this misery, but hearing that made her upset. “Why should she divorce them and let those two jerks have their way?”
“Why are you being so harsh? Yanjing and Jiang Nan have always been a pair. If we’re being honest, Yuxi is the one who came later.”
“You know nothing. Ever heard of marriage law? No matter what they had before, Yuxi is now Zhou Yanjing’s wife. What Jiang Nan’s doing is being a homewrecker!”
Tan Xingchen exploded, “You’re the one who knows nothing!”
Yu Jiaxiao retorted, “I know you.”
Tan Xingchen leapt up from the sofa and lunged at her. “Who are you calling nothing!”
The two of them rolled into a wrestling match. Despite being down one limb, Tan Xingchen was holding her own.
As the chaos unfolded, Lin Yuxi silently got up and moved away from the battlefield, heading to the refreshments table.
The long dining table was filled with cold dishes. Lin Yuxi picked out a few and placed them on her plate when a man next to her asked, “Do you have a sweet tooth?”
It was the man who had squeezed her hand earlier.
With no solid proof, Lin Yuxi couldn’t just label him a creep, so she replied politely, “Yes.”
She continued picking up food while Wei Bin stood beside her, not leaving.
“You look even more beautiful than the last time we met, sister-in-law,” he said.
Lin Yuxi glanced at him, but couldn’t recall: “We’ve met before?”
“It was quite a while ago, so it’s normal that you don’t remember,” Wei Bin smiled, looking like a gentleman. “It was when you and Second Young Master were watching the meteor shower on Fuming Mountain. We bumped into each other.”
Lin Yuxi remembered Fuming Mountain.
Back then, her relationship with Zhou Yanjing was still good. The weather had just warmed up a bit, and one evening, he told her there would be a Virgo meteor shower, with Fuming Mountain being the best viewing spot. He took her up the mountain to camp overnight.
She vaguely recalled someone greeting Zhou Yanjing that night, but it had been brief, so her memory was hazy.
She didn’t even remember much of the meteor shower. What stayed with her was the humid, intimate entanglement inside the spacious tent.
What was supposed to be a meteor-watching trip turned into Zhou Yanjing pinning her down on the soft mat in the tent. She heard distant shouts of joy from others and realized the meteors had already streaked across the sky.
She nudged Zhou Yanjing. “The meteor shower has started.”
Zhou Yanjing kissed the perspiration on her neck. “You can still make a wish with your eyes closed.”
Lin Yuxi didn’t have many wishes, so she made one: “I hope we can come back for the next meteor shower.”
Zhou Yanjing hummed in response. “Then my wish is that the next meteor shower, we’ll be able to do this again.”
The last two words were whispered in her ear, making her blush instantly. She slapped him lightly on the face. “You’re sick!”
Her soft palm landed on his face without any force, more like a playful gesture.
Zhou Yanjing chuckled, kissing her lips. “Why are you so easy to tease?”
In any case, she didn’t see a single meteor that night. And because they hadn’t prepared for what happened, Zhou Yanjing, the rascal, hadn’t brought any protection…
Lin Yuxi had been worried for days afterward, afraid she might have accidentally conceived. Only when her period arrived on time the next month did she finally relax.
Recalling those annoying memories, Lin Yuxi felt her ears flush with warmth.
“What a coincidence,” she responded calmly, trying to act indifferent, as she picked up a small cake.
Wei Bin noticed her reddening ears, and a dark, unclear glint flashed in his eyes.
His gaze subtly traveled downward, sweeping over her waist and hips.
Lin Yuxi, head down, didn’t notice. However, Zhou Yanjing, standing in the garden outside, caught the man’s lingering gaze through the glass.
The pace of his phone conversation quickened, his tone growing subtly impatient.
“If they want both Boyu’s channels and to curry favor with the secretary’s nephew, they should at least see if they have enough clout. Tell Director Wan I don’t do supporting roles. Either they give me the lead underwriter, adjust the shares to satisfy me, or we don’t cooperate.”
With that, he hung up swiftly and strode back inside.
Wei Bin picked up a glass of wine and handed it to Lin Yuxi. “This fruit wine is quite good sweet, but not too much. You should try it.”
Lin Yuxi replied, “No thanks.”
Wei Bin didn’t retract the glass, his gaze fixed on her. “Do you only drink what your husband gives you?”
Lin Yuxi felt uncomfortable under his gaze, though she couldn’t pinpoint why. Without making a scene, she subtly moved a step away.
“I have work tomorrow.”
“It’s just a glass of fruit wine; it won’t affect your work,” he insisted, pushing the glass toward her again, jokingly adding, “You’re not worried I’d drug you, are you? Don’t worry, your husband is still here how could I dare?”
His words made her even more uncomfortable.
It was as though the only reason he wouldn’t drug her was out of fear of Zhou Yanjing, rather than any moral or legal considerations.
Lin Yuxi frowned, feeling her skin prickle with unease.
Just then, Zhou Yanjing pushed open the glass door from the garden and walked in.
His steady steps exuded a powerful presence, one that was impossible to ignore.
He brought with him the cold air of early winter, walking straight to Lin Yuxi’s side. His broad, strong hand rested on her waist, and with a subtle but firm motion, he pulled her in front of him.
