Chapter 17: An Important Day (1/2)
Staring blankly at Shen Cheng’s worried face, which was just inches away, Sugar’s eyes suddenly widened. Her emerald green pupils trembled uncontrollably as her body instinctively shifted back, creating a small distance between her and Shen Cheng.
Her mouth opened as if she wanted to say something, but no words came out.
Although he didn’t know what had happened, Shen Cheng clearly sensed the overflowing fear in Sugar’s eyes.
Was it because of a nightmare? Apart from that, Shen Cheng couldn’t think of anything else that could make Sugar so terrified.
With this thought in mind, Shen Cheng reached out cautiously, attempting to get closer to Sugar again.
Seeing that this time Sugar showed no signs of resisting, Shen Cheng gently placed his hand on top of her head and softly comforted her, “It’s okay, I’m here. Everything is okay… I’m here.”
Hugging her blanket, Sugar’s ears drooped, her mood low, and she nodded silently.
Shen Cheng didn’t know—or rather, only Sugar herself knew—that what she had feared wasn’t the nightmare but Shen Cheng, who was getting closer and closer to her.
After Sugar’s condition improved a little, Shen Cheng finally left the bedroom.
Since the bedroom curtains had not been drawn, as soon as he opened the door, the dazzling sunlight reflected from the living room. Shen Cheng then realized that it was already noon.
“Huihui only has morning classes, so she’ll probably be back soon…” Shen Cheng muttered to himself as he opened the refrigerator, where an assortment of cakes and pastries greeted him, leaving him speechless.
Would they really be able to finish all of these?
After calculating in his mind, Shen Cheng’s lips twitched.
Damn, next time I must make less!
…
“Senior, why is the café closed today? Did something happen…?”
Lin Yuhui, who had just entered the door, took off her shoes and searched for Shen Cheng. When she turned her head, she stood there in shock, her words cut off abruptly.
After a long pause, she stammered, “S-Senior, what happened? Did the Cat Café… shut down?”
“Huh?” Shen Cheng, who had just walked out of the kitchen, was confused. Following Lin Yuhui’s gaze, he saw the mountain of cakes on the table, which made his scalp tingle, and he finally understood.
With a wry smile, Shen Cheng said, “Sugar’s got her period today, so we closed the shop. These pastries were made in advance but didn’t get sold.”
“Sugar… got her period?” It took Lin Yuhui a moment to react, her cheeks turning slightly red. Her words carried a bit of disbelief, but Shen Cheng had no reason to lie to her.
Seeing Shen Cheng’s serious expression and his shrug, Lin Yuhui puffed out her cheeks and said, “When you run into trouble, you don’t even call me. My current classes aren’t even important…”
“Don’t say that. You still need to attend your classes. Missing one day of business at the Cat Café won’t be a big deal,” Shen Cheng said as he handed Lin Yuhui a plate of steamed cake.
After taking a bite of the steamed cake, Lin Yuhui still complained with a hint of resentment, “What if you lose customers…?”
“Don’t worry about that. I have absolute confidence in my Cat Café!” Shen Cheng patted his chest in assurance, which only earned him an eye roll from the landlady.
After Lin Yuhui repeatedly stressed, “Next time you’re swamped, make sure to call me!” Shen Cheng rushed to wake up the sleeping Cheese and Sugar.
“Huh?” Lin Yuhui was surprised to see Cheese wake up in Shen Cheng’s bedroom. Then, she gave Shen Cheng an incredibly sharp look.
At that moment, Shen Cheng, who was rubbing Cheese’s head, felt a chill down his spine. After a brief second of eye contact with the landlady, he quickly explained the situation.
After a lengthy explanation, Lin Yuhui finally believed him, though she continued to watch the scene of the one person and two cats with a suspicious gaze.
Could it be… had her place really been infiltrated?
For lunch, they ate the unsold cakes. Thankfully, the group had a clear division of preferences.
The landlady loved the steamed cakes Shen Cheng made, while Sugar preferred the egg tarts, and Cheese, unsurprisingly, had a special fondness for cheesecake.
