Chapter 55: Why are you not growing here? (1/2)
On a cool autumn afternoon, one person and one fish began a fierce competition.
Since Shen Cheng’s fishing technique was unpredictable, the Mermaid frequently failed to catch the fish. However, this method didn’t work as well later. As the saying goes, “once bitten, twice shy,” and by the end, the Mermaid could easily twist her waist in sync with Shen Cheng’s rod movements, catching the fish and diving back into the water with the grace of a national-level diver.
As the sky gradually darkened, apart from a pile of junk the Mermaid had caught, Shen Cheng had only managed to catch a few palm-sized small fish.
Judging that it was time to leave, Shen Cheng packed up his fishing rod and bent down to make eye contact with the Mermaid in the water.
“Can you talk?” Shen Cheng asked.
The Mermaid tilted her head, looking at Shen Cheng with a confused expression.
Was it because the place where Demi-Humans were transformed was too remote?
Shen Cheng guessed that this fish should have the ability to speak. During their struggle for fish, she had made sounds like “hmm” and “ah” and could also understand what Shen Cheng was saying.
However, although the difficulty of animals becoming Demi-Humans depended on the environment, it was strange that a fish from this lake couldn’t say a single word. Even penguins from Antarctica, after transforming into Demi-Humans, could speak. Could this lake be more remote than Antarctica?
And… cherry-pink hair and a fish tail—what species of fish was this?
Suppressing his curiosity, Shen Cheng slung his fishing gear over his back, picked up a water bucket in one hand and a large bag of underwater trash in the other, and glanced at the Mermaid. After thinking for a moment, he put down the bucket and waved at her, saying, “I’m leaving, goodbye.”
The Mermaid was stunned but imitated Shen Cheng’s action and waved back at him.
With a faint smile, Shen Cheng picked up the bucket and quickly disappeared from the Mermaid’s sight.
…
Although the Old Dock was near the inn, it was not exactly close. If it were the old Shen Cheng, carrying so much stuff over such a long distance, he might have crawled back.
But now, Shen Cheng, with the genetics of both cat and dog Demi-Humans, plus some training during this period, made the journey back with only a little sweat and without feeling tired.
Along the way, he disposed of the underwater trash and then returned to the inn with a bucket of small fish.
Looking at the few small fish in the bucket, Lin Zhensheng showed a look of surprise and suspicion, “Is this what you caught at the Old Dock?”
Shen Cheng didn’t answer, just crossed his arms and smiled with an expression that spoke for itself.
Lin Zhensheng slapped his forehead twice, muttering, “What a strange thing,” before returning to the front desk to continue reading his book.
Another uneventful day…
Shen Cheng carried the bucket into the kitchen, cleaned up the small fish, and fried them. After serving one plate to Lin Zhensheng, he brought another plate upstairs.
After knocking twice, he pushed open the door to the girls’ room, where the sight of the group sitting around a bed playing cards greeted him.
“Fried fish, nya!” Cheese’s eyes lit up upon seeing Shen Cheng. Lin Yuhui quickly waved her hand, “Senior, come over here, quick!”
Shen Cheng walked forward and sat between Lin Yuhui and Milk Tea. He handed the plate of fried fish to Cheese and asked, “What game are you playing?”
“Drawing… drawing turtles…” Milk Tea answered quietly, her head lowered.
The punishment for losing was sticking small paper notes. The few cats hadn’t played before and seemed eager to try.
