Chapter 59: Demi-Humans with Supernatural Abilities? (2/2)
After being washed by a light rain, the Old Dock was much cleaner. Shen Cheng threw a cushion onto the damp wooden planks and sat down. The boards creaked, which still made Shen Cheng somewhat apprehensive.
Having baited the hook, Shen Cheng cast his line vigorously, and thus began another day of fishing.
About ten minutes later, the fishing rod quivered slightly. Shen Cheng reeled it in, and a small fish, roughly six inches long, emerged from the water.
However, before Shen Cheng could feel any joy, there was a splash as a Mermaid leapt out of the water, snatched the fish with its mouth, and plunged back into the depths.
Shen Cheng: “…”
The Mermaid soon resurfaced with the fish still in its mouth, tilting its head to look at Shen Cheng triumphantly, its eyes narrowing into pretty pink crescent shapes.
Grinding his teeth, Shen Cheng was about to bait the hook again when he suddenly recalled something. He put down the bait and addressed the Mermaid, “My name is Shen Cheng.”
Mermaid: “?”
“Try saying it: Shi—um—Shen, Chi—ng—Cheng.” While speaking, Shen Cheng gestured emphatically, but despite his efforts, the Mermaid merely tilted its head, leaving him unsure if it didn’t understand or just wasn’t interested.
Shen Cheng could only sigh deeply, “Ah, indeed a fish.”
As soon as he spoke, the Mermaid puffed its cheeks in mild anger, then raised its right hand before Shen Cheng’s stunned gaze, and a water ball formed out of nowhere.
Wait a minute, shouldn’t these abilities belong to Demi-Humans? Shouldn’t these be Supernatural Abilities?!
However, Shen Cheng had no time to ponder further, watching as the Mermaid flung the water ball in his direction. Sitting there, Shen Cheng couldn’t react in time.
“Splat!”
The water ball struck Shen Cheng, exploding and leaving him soaked.
Shen Cheng: “…”
Alright, it was certain now—this fish could definitely understand him!
For the rest of the time, a drenched Shen Cheng continued fishing, exchanging jibes with the Mermaid, realizing that it was mostly there to play with him. Otherwise, it could have just stayed hidden and scared away all the fish. Compared to the previous day, today had more playfulness between Shen Cheng and the Mermaid.
The two played merrily, oblivious to the passage of time, until dusk fell.
Guessing it was high time to head back before Lin Yuhui called him, Shen Cheng packed up his fishing gear, grabbed the bucket, waved to the Mermaid, and hurried off.
Not until Shen Cheng’s silhouette vanished did the Mermaid continue to silently watch from the lake before finally submerging and hiding its presence.
…
Pushing open the inn’s door, Shen Cheng entered, bedraggled and carrying a bucket. “I’m back! Had dinner?”
“Not yet.” Lin Zhensheng, sitting at the counter reading, responded without lifting his head.
“Perfect!” Shen Cheng placed the bucket on the ground, hands on his hips, “Fish for dinner!”
“What?” At this, Lin Zhensheng’s eyebrows shot up. He put down his book and peered at the bucket. “With those few tiny fish you caught… You… Whoa!”
Seeing the bucket almost filled to the brim by two large fish over a foot long among smaller ones, Lin Zhensheng’s expression turned from disdain to astonishment, stammering, “Did you… did you fish from someone’s pond?!”
“Still the same Old Dock!” With that, Shen Cheng hurried into the kitchen with his bucket.
Lin Zhensheng stood there for a moment before shifting from dazed to contemplative, murmuring, “Maybe… I should try fishing again sometime?”
