I Became a Fortune Teller in the 90s
I Became a Fortune Teller in the 90s Chapter 1: Rebirth

“Dai Qing, I’ve supported you and your daughter for so many years. You should be grateful. If you know what’s good for you, hurry up and file for divorce. Don’t force me to kick you out.”

“Your grandfather was a scammer, a con artist who tricked people, and you’re just as disgraceful, throwing yourself at my son before marriage. You’ve got no shame. I should’ve thrown you out ages ago! Filthy! Get the divorce and get out. Don’t dirty our Liu family’s house.”

“Did you hear me? Take that worthless daughter of yours and get out. Make room for my precious grandson! You’re just taking up space. If I had known, I never would’ve let you two get married, letting my son waste his life with you.”

“Ha! A washed-up hag. If I were you, I wouldn’t even have the face to keep living.”

“This hasn’t been your home for a long time. Get out of here. Don’t think you’ll get a penny from the compensation when this place gets demolished…”

With a loud crash, the world around her shattered into darkness. Blood filled her vision, and the bitter, mocking faces of her in-laws echoed in her mind. Dai Qing’s eyes shot open, but instead of the cruel reality, she was staring up at a faded green mosquito net.

Instinctively, she raised a hand to touch the back of her head, only to realize her entire body ached, and her head was spinning.

The room in front of her was both familiar and foreign. She froze until her eyes landed on an old calendar hanging on the wall: May 27, 1990.

Dai Qing clutched her chest, feeling her heart race wildly. She stumbled out of bed and rushed outside, where she was met with the sight of a familiar courtyard… a flood of emotions overwhelmed her. Heaven had taken pity on her and given her another chance at life.

After drinking some water to moist her dry throat, Dai Qing lay back down, tears silently streaming from her eyes.

In her previous life, she had grown up with only her grandfather by her side. He was a skilled fortune teller and had always told her she had the potential to follow in his footsteps, claiming she was born under a rare yin sign, making her perfect for the craft.

During difficult times, her grandfather secretly read fortunes to help them survive. But someone reported him for promoting superstition, and he was jailed for three months. He was released with a crippled leg.

From then on, the townsfolk labeled them as swindlers, cheats who couldn’t be trusted.

Because of this, Dai Qing developed a deep resentment toward fortune-telling and refused to follow her grandfather’s path.

Seeing her disinterest, her grandfather didn’t push her. On his deathbed, he used his connections to get her a job at a textile factory, where she met Liu Ming, a mechanic.

For someone as introverted as Dai Qing, Liu Ming was like a ray of light, and she quickly fell for his sweet words, eventually becoming pregnant before they were married.

When Liu Ming’s mother found out, she wasn’t angry. In fact, she was thrilled and welcomed Dai Qing into their home with open arms, treating her kindly. She convinced Dai Qing that since they couldn’t legally marry yet due to her age, they could wait to register their marriage. She also advised her not to work while pregnant, fearing others would gossip about her.

In reality, they tricked her into giving up her job, which was then given to Liu Ming’s younger sister from the countryside.

Dai Qing let them push her further and further. After the birth of her daughter, everything changed.

Her mother-in-law’s attitude flipped overnight, turning cruel. Her husband became cold and distant. Even the neighbors gossiped and mocked her. Before she had even finished her postpartum recovery, the household chores were dumped on her, reducing her to nothing more than a servant in the Liu family, stripped of any dignity.

To make matters worse, the entire family conspired to seize the two houses her grandfather had left her. They refused to let her and Liu Ming register their marriage unless she handed over the property. This also meant their daughter couldn’t be legally registered, leaving her a nameless outcast.

She endured it all, even her husband’s infidelity. But when the mistress showed up with her newborn son, flaunting him in front of her, Dai Qing felt her entire world collapse.

After the divorce, she was kicked out of the Liu family with nothing but the clothes on her back. When she returned to the old house her grandfather left her, she discovered the whole neighborhood was set to be demolished.
