{Qian Xu is returning to China 4}
“That won’t be necessary, right?” Gu Wei, though familiar with the local police, didn’t want to waste any favors over such a trivial matter.
Cheng Shuangyi’s smile was thin and mocking, her expression almost disdainful. “I thought you had some influence with Shen Qi, something worth mentioning. But it seems you’re useless out here in the real world. Can’t even handle something so small.”
“Cheng Shuangyi.”
Gu Wei and Cheng Shuangyi hadn’t been on bad terms before—otherwise, he wouldn’t have been the one to arrange things between her and Shen Qi. In fact, the reunion he had set up at the bar that night was no coincidence; he had orchestrated the whole thing, hoping for their reconciliation.
He could even sympathize with her frustration at not getting what she wanted.
But that didn’t mean she had the right to take it out on him. After all, he was the heir to the Gu Group, while Cheng Shuangyi was just a marginal figure in the Cheng family, hardly anyone worth paying attention to. If it weren’t for Shen Qi’s return, this group wouldn’t even be bothering to keep her on a pedestal.
Rubbing his temples, Gu Wei felt a headache coming on. In the end, he painfully followed through with the proper procedures to deal with the situation.
Cheng Shuangyi, after her brief stint at the police station, was far from pleased. “If you hadn’t shown up, it would’ve just been a fine. But thanks to you, I nearly ended up in jail.”
Instead of showing any gratitude, she unleashed a stream of boundless complaints.
It was late.
Gu Wei didn’t argue, though his expression was dark and cold. “Cheng Shuangyi, take care of yourself.”
The two parted on bad terms.
…
From that moment, Gu Wei realized all of Cheng Shuangyi’s shortcomings. He doubted Shen Qi’s heart could ever be fully invested in a woman like her.
In Gu Wei’s view, if Shen Qi had any lingering feelings, they were likely remnants of a desire for revenge. Once that sense of revenge was fulfilled, Cheng Shuangyi would be of no value.
In the aftermath, Gu Wei’s curiosity about another woman grew. Although the information he had obtained from Li Xiyin was incomplete, it was enough to confirm that during Shen Qi’s time in the U.S., he had been accompanied by another woman—someone with brains.
This new knowledge made Gu Wei realize how much easier a potential alliance could be.
After all, men can be fickle. With even a sliver of past affection, it wouldn’t be hard to rekindle an old flame. Besides, some of Shen Qi’s previous actions had already proven Gu Wei’s suspicions correct.
Standing by the window, Gu Wei smoked a cigarette, watching the smoke curl in the air. His annoyance toward Cheng Shuangyi dissipated, replaced by a clear understanding of who would make a better chess piece.
The next day, when Gu Wei learned that Shen Qi had spent the night in a hotel with Cheng Shuangyi, he didn’t bat an eye. Instead, he sent a message regarding another woman.
“Qian Xu is returning to China.”
