Chapter 88: Poisoned
“What are you thinking? Are you dissatisfied with how I performed just now?”
Fei Li looked at the serious Luo Sang and remarked, “You’re really something!”
“Something?” Luo Sang looked at his animal skin clothes. “Everyone is like this.”
And thus, the awkward small talk ended.
Due to the herbal medicine, both Luo Sang and Fei Li had developed some reservations about the Fox Tribe.
They were too lazy to interact with the foxes and decided to stay in the house, roasting sweet potatoes for themselves.
After eating sweet potatoes for several days in a row, they began to look at them with distaste.
However, since the only other food available was some unidentified herbs, they chose to stick with the sweet potatoes. Luo Sang ate a few bites with a grim face before losing his appetite.
He stood up abruptly and walked outside.
Perhaps knowing they wouldn’t leave the Fox Tribe’s settlement, there were no foxes guarding their house anymore.
Fei Li chased after Luo Sang as he left the house. “What are you doing?”
“I’m going to find something else to eat. I refuse to believe there’s not a bit of meat around here.”
With his rich hunting experience, Luo Sang was confident he could find meat.
As soon as he stepped out, Fei Li caught a whiff of meat. “Do you smell that? What’s that smell?” Luo Sang frowned, sniffed, and then relaxed his furrowed brow.
They looked at each other in unison and said, “It’s the smell of roasted meat!”
Following the scent of the meat, they went straight in that direction.
From a distance, they saw a group of foxes gathered together, and the smell of meat was clearly coming from there.
Were they eating roasted meat?
Fei Li eagerly pushed his way into the group of foxes.
What he saw before him was something he would never forget.
A young calf had been skinned and was roasting on the fire, sizzling with fat.
In modern times, roast beef is a popular delicacy.
But here, Fei Li suddenly shivered.
They had captured a young cow and cruelly roasted it as food?
His expression changed, and he quickly stepped out of the crowd of foxes.
Seeing his disturbed expression, Luo Sang quickly asked, “What’s wrong?”
“They… they are roasting a young cow.”
Luo Sang glanced at the foxes and then looked away.
There were only two tribes here: the foxes and the Ox Tribe.
The foxes were actually eating the meat of the Ox tribe’s companions?
A trace of disbelief flashed in Luo Sang’s eyes.
As orcs, they have the principle of not eating humans or members of their own kind.
The fact that the Fox Tribe disregards even the basic principles of orcs shows how brutal they truly are.
Immersed in the delicious aroma of roasted beef, the foxes paid no attention to them.
At this moment, Hu Zong happened to come out of the house and greeted them with a smile.
“I was just about to send someone to notify you, but you came on your own. Today’s luck is on our side, we hunted a young cow. You must be tired of sweet potatoes, right? This will be a nice change of flavor for you.”
Hu Zong proudly boasted about the Fox Tribe’s hunting achievements.
Thinking about the innocent Ox Tribe, Fei Li asked in a restrained tone, “Why did you hunt the young calves of the Ox Tribe?”
Hu Zong was taken aback!
“Survival of the fittest, it’s a common survival rule, isn’t it?”
“But the Ox Tribe…” Fei Li didn’t finish his sentence before a familiar roar shook the buildings of the Fox Tribe’s settlement.
This was… Luo Sang pulled Fei Li back and looked warily behind them.
Then, the deafening sound of footsteps approached.
Soon, Mitu burst into the Fox Tribe’s settlement with the Ox Tribe.
The foxes, who had been gathered around the roasted calf, scattered as the roasted young cow came into view for the Ox Tribe.
Mitu stopped, his eyes bloodshot as he stared at the calf on the fire.
The Ox Tribe members showed expressions of deep sorrow, with tears in their eyes.
This scene moved Fei Li.
No one could accept seeing their kind meet such a fate, especially not a young one.
Mitu raised his eyes and glared fiercely at Hu Zong, “You actually intended to eat the young calves of the Ox Tribe.”
“It’s just a young calf, not an orc. Why are you so worked up?” Hu Zong replied dismissively.
A hint of murderous intent flashed in Mitu’s eyes as he looked at Hu Zong. “Our two tribes have been here for many years, only competing for the spring water. I didn’t expect you to target our young calves. Hu Zong, we need to settle this score properly.”
As he spoke, Mitu opened his mouth, spewing out a stream of dark water.
Not only Mitu, but all the Ox Tribe orcs began to spray water, quickly submerging the Fox Tribe’s houses in dark, murky water.
Fortunately, in the nick of time, Luo Sang transformed into a wolf and carried Fei Li on his back, saving them from being drowned.
Fei Li pinched his nose, looking disdainfully at the dark water, “You really live up to the name of water buffalo, your water-absorbing ability is top-notch.”
“What should we do?”
“If we’re with the Fox Tribe, the Ox Tribe will surely think we were involved in harming the calves and won’t let us off.”
Upon hearing this, Luo Sang leapt up onto the roof.
The foxes, struggling to avoid the dark water, were eventually overwhelmed and submerged.
Hu Zong glanced at Luo Sang and Fei Li and shouted, “Don’t be afraid, everyone! Let’s all go up to the roof.”
The foxes scrambled onto the roofs, escaping immediate danger, and then began to fight back.
The foxes threw sharpened weapons directly at the Ox Tribe.
The Ox Tribe, being large and unwieldy, couldn’t dodge in time. Some Ox orcs were injured by the weapons, and blood flowed continuously.
Seeing the injuries to the Ox Tribe, Fei Li felt a pang of sympathy.
“Thanks to Luo Sang and Fei Li’s quick thinking, everyone was saved. We must not let their efforts go to waste, today we will annihilate the Ox Tribe.”
As soon as the words were spoken, Hu Zong’s attacks grew fiercer.
The Fox Tribe had the advantage of position, and with Hu Zong’s words deliberately distracting the Ox Tribe, they quickly fell into a disadvantage.
Noticing the situation, Fei Li leaned close to Luo Sang and whispered, “We should go down.”
Luo Sang, puzzled, did not immediately follow his advice.
“This is a good chance for us to leave the Fox Tribe. The Ox Tribe is injured, so they can’t do much to us for now. We just need to pretend to be overpowered by the Ox Tribe, then let them take us away.”
Luo Sang understood his intention and jumped down from the roof.
The Ox Tribe, thinking Luo Sang and Fei Li were going to attack, took a step back.
Seizing the opportunity, Fei Li jumped off Luo Sang’s back and approached Mitu, “Hurry up, you’re no match for the Fox Tribe.”
Mitu hesitated after looking at him.
“Do you want to see your people die here?”
Looking back at the heavily injured Ox Tribe, Mitu let out a roar, and immediately all the Ox Tribe began to retreat.
Fei Li and Luo Sang mingled with the Ox Tribe, and from Hu Zong’s perspective, it appeared as if the two had been taken away by the Ox Tribe.
Once the Ox Tribe had left, the water in the Fox Tribe’s area had receded significantly.
A fox orc looked at Hu Zong and asked, “Chief, Luo Sang and Fei Li were taken away by the Ox Tribe. Could they be joining forces with the Ox Tribe?”
Fei Li and Luo Sang were powerful, and the foxes felt uneasy about them being with the Ox Tribe.
Hu Zong, with a cold smile, shook his head, “Those wild Oxs are brutal and unreasonable. After seeing them with the foxes multiple times and now roasting meat together, they definitely won’t let them off easily.”
“Do you think Mitu will kill them?”
“Even if they don’t kill them, they definitely won’t trust them. But it’s best if they do kill them. Such strong opponents might lead the Ox Tribe and them to mutually destroy each other, and in the end, the spiritual spring will be ours.”
Thinking of this, Hu Zong had a beaming smile.
Luo Sang and Fei Li followed the Ox Tribe back to their camp. The simplicity of the Ox Tribe’s living conditions was hard for them to bear.
The houses here had no walls, only a roof for shelter from the rain. It was exactly like the Ox sheds Fei Li had seen at his grandmother’s house in the countryside!
The living conditions of the Ox Tribe were too rudimentary!
After barely enduring three seconds, it started to rain, and they quickly sought refuge inside a house.
Watching the heavy rain outside, Fei Li reluctantly put aside his disdain.
Unbeknownst to them, the surrounding Ox Tribe members were looking at them with disdainful expressions.
“Lord Mitu, it’s bad. Ah Mao’s wound has changed color.”
A panicked voice interrupted them, and Mitu, unable to attend to them, immediately left the house to go to Ah Mao.
“Lord Mitu, not just Ah Mao, everyone’s wounds have changed color.”
Changed color?
Changing color was usually a symptom of poisoning.
Seeing Fei Li about to leave the house, Luo Sang pulled him back, “What are you doing? Don’t forget you’re human. The Ox Tribe hates you deeply. You can’t go.”
Luo Sang firmly held him back, unwilling to let him leave.
The rain continued to pour outside, and the incessant sound of rain made Fei Li anxious.
The living conditions of the Ox Tribe were already poor, and with the rain making the houses damp, the injured orcs were suffering even more.
Moreover, they were poisoned. If the toxins in their bodies weren’t cleared in time, they could die at any moment.
How could he bear to watch the Ox Tribe’s orcs die in front of him?
He held Luo Sang’s hand and gave him a reassuring look. “I’ll be fine. Don’t forget I’m a witch doctor. Right now, no one but me can save them, so they won’t kill me.”
“No.”
Recalling the previous behavior of the Fox Tribe, Luo Sang was resolute.
The Ox Tribe already harbored murderous intent towards Fei Li, and he didn’t want to gamble on what they might do to Fei Li.
He didn’t dare to take the risk.
“It’s bad. Ah Mao seems to be dying. He has no breath left,” a voice from the Ox Tribe came again.
Fei Li anxiously looked at Luo Sang. “Then come with me. With your protection, they definitely won’t dare to do anything to me. Is that okay?”
With a cold snort, Luo Sang looked unwilling.
“Luo Sang, please. I’m begging you.”
Fei Li’s pleading made Luo Sang, even if he was as tough as steel, soften immediately.
Seeing Luo Sang relent, Fei Li quickly led him to the room where the injured Ah Mao was.
Just as they were about to enter the room, the Ox Tribe stopped them. “You’re not allowed to go in.”
The Ox Tribe looked at them with eyes full of resentment.
“I’m a witch doctor. I can save Ah Mao. Let me in to take a look.”
The resentment in the Ox Tribe’s eyes did not lessen at all. “If you hadn’t kidnapped the calf, we wouldn’t have fallen for the fox tribe’s scheme. Don’t pretend to be the good guys.”
