Taking advantage of everyone being present, Su Yi decided to clear things up once and for all.
This would also prevent the Qin family from backstabbing her later.
She directly pulled out the annulment document and handed it to the village head in the crowd, “Village head, this is the annulment document that Qin Yunfeng and his lover wrote to me when I went to the army. It clearly states in black and white that they were the ones who hooked up first, forcing me to annul the engagement for their sake.”
“To accommodate them and protect our village’s reputation, so that outsiders wouldn’t laugh at us, I’ve been swallowing my anger until now. Do you think this money should be returned?”
The village head trembled as he looked at the paper, then looked up at Su Yi, “Good child, you’ve suffered.”
He then turned to Qin Yunfeng, “You grew up under our watch, I never imagined you would turn into a Chen Shimei. You’re so foolish! If it weren’t for Su Yi’s kindness, your future would have been completely ruined!”
Upon hearing this, Qin Yunfeng immediately lowered his head, “Village head, the fault lies entirely with me, it has nothing to do with Su Yi. I wronged her.”
“Consider the previous engagement money as compensation, there’s no need to return it.”
Upon hearing this, Qin mother immediately stood up, “Why is all the fault yours? Son, you’re foolish! It’s clearly her who isn’t good enough for you, yet she won’t let go of you.”
“Enough!” Qin Yunfeng couldn’t help but interrupt halfway through, “Mother, stop it. We’re clearly in the wrong in this matter.”
Qin’s mother was so angry that she couldn’t speak, she just stared at Qin Yunfeng and choked up.
Bai Ruolin was utterly convinced by Su Yi’s few words about herself and Qin Yunfeng.
Not only did Qin Yunfeng not try to argue, he also publicly admitted his mistakes.
Suddenly, she felt like the whole village was pointing fingers at her, so she angrily stomped back into the house.
With the matter now out in the open, Su Yi had no intention of staying any longer. She put away the annulment document and prepared to leave.
Little did she know that the Su family had been waiting for this moment.
Having finally gained the upper hand, they were not willing to let it go.
Zhang Guilan was the first to jump up, “Alright! You’ve been in cahoots with that old woman all along, deceiving our entire family, and now you want us to refund the money? Disgusting!”
“You and your son have both stolen and deceived, and you even wanted to drown our daughter. Hurry up and pay the money as compensation!”
The second and fourth brothers stood beside Zhang Guilan to support her, saying, “The Qin family must compensate us, or we’ll take this to his military unit and see if he can still stay there!”
Although Su Xingfa and Su Dahai, father and son, didn’t step forward to add fuel to the fire, they stood aside and joined the most respected elder in the village in criticizing the Qin family for their dishonorable behavior.
The voices were clearly leaning in favor of the Su family.
Qin’s mother started to panic, “It’s already generous of us not to ask you to return our money, and now you want us to compensate you instead? How does that make any sense?”
Zhang Guilan was feeling triumphant, “My daughter has everything in black and white. If you don’t compensate us, I’ll go to his unit after the New Year and make a scene. I don’t believe no one will care.”
Qin Yunfeng couldn’t take the noise any longer and quickly pulled his mother up, “Mother, just take out the money for now. I’ll repay you tomorrow.”
Qin’s mother glared at him angrily, “We’ve spent almost all the money preparing for your wedding banquet. Where would we get more money now?”
Qin Yunfeng pressed his lips together and said, “We can cancel the banquet. Just take out a hundred yuan to compensate them first!”
Zhang Guilan sneered, “You think you can settle this with just a hundred yuan? It has to be two hundred!”
Bai Ruolin had been hiding in the house, eavesdropping at the door. When she heard they had to pay two hundred yuan, she immediately rushed out, “Yunfeng, why do we have to give them money? Didn’t you already give them some in the army?”
Qin Yunfeng pursed his lips, “That’s a different matter. My mother doesn’t have enough money, you also give a hundred to cover it for now.”
The group argued about the two hundred yuan for a while longer.
In the end, Qin’s mother and Bai Ruolin each paid a hundred yuan before it was over.
Su Yi had long grown impatient, and she found a stool in the corner to sit down and watch the show with the villagers.
She watched as Zhang Guilan made Qin Mu and Bai Ruolin roll their eyes in anger, and then received two hundred yuan in compensation.
She couldn’t help but secretly give her a thumbs up.
Although she didn’t like Zhang Guilan, and Zhang Guilan didn’t like her either.
But seeing Qin Mu and Bai Ruolin suffer was still quite satisfying.
After all the commotion, the actors weren’t tired, but the audience was exhausted.
Finally, the show ended, and when the Su family left, they completely forgot about Su Yi.
It was her sister-in-law, Wang Fang, who called out to her.
Su Yi hurried to catch up, but as soon as she entered the courtyard,
Su Xingfa closed the door and shouted at her, “You rebellious daughter, get down on your knees!”
Su Yi was stunned for a moment. “What do you mean?”
Was this family still not satisfied with the drama they had just witnessed?
Seeing that she didn’t kneel, Su Xingfa became furious and went to the corner to grab a stick. “You worthless thing, you’ve disgraced the entire Su family today, and you still haven’t knelt down?”
Su Yi sneered. “Back at the Qin’s house, you were all standing up for me. Were you just putting on a show for everyone else?”
“It wasn’t my fault today. Even if someone was embarrassed, it was the Qin family, not me. And you even got three hundred yuan for free. I saw everyone seemed pretty happy on the way back.”
Su Xingfa was so angry at her backtalk that he pointed his finger at her nose, wanting to scold her.
But he felt that it wouldn’t be good to curse too harshly in front of his daughter-in-law.
He quickly called his wife out.
Zhang Guilan had just finished putting away the money and came out to help scold her, “Your father is right. It’s because you’re not ambitious. If you could have married Qin Yunfeng, you would have had a monthly allowance of several dozen yuan. Why would you care about three hundred yuan? You have no foresight!”
Su Yi acted indifferent. “Heh, you’re thinking about his allowance, but unfortunately, he thinks your family is too poor. He wants to climb a higher branch. Too bad, his calculations didn’t work out!”
Zhang Guilan was about to retort, but then she thought about it. The woman Qin Yunfeng brought with him did look like she came from a big city, dressed and styled like a wealthy woman.
“Could it be that Qin Yunfeng found a rich father-in-law? Why didn’t you remind me to ask for more money then?”
After saying this, Zhang Guilan felt regretful. “No, you need to go back and make a fuss with them, get more money.”
Su Yi was defeated by her shamelessness. “This is a one-time deal. There’s no asking for more after the fact. That’s called extortion. If you want it, go ask yourself, I won’t stop you.”
Zhang Guilan felt that her daughter had changed completely since she came back.
She used to be quiet and let them hit and scold her without a word, but now she’s constantly talking back.
You say one thing, she has two waiting for you.
Zhang Guilan immediately forgot about demanding more money and snatched the stick from Su Xingfa’s hand, ready to hit Su Yi.
“You’ve gone too far! I’ll teach you a lesson today!”
Seeing this, Su Yi quickly hid behind Wang Fang, looking pitiful. “Sister-in-law, you’ve seen what my life is like at home. I can’t stay here anymore. How about I go back to the city with you for a few days?”
