Release the Female Lead, Leave Her to Me
Release the Female Lead Ch. 508

Chapter 508: Undercover Mission Begins

Her eyes looked unmistakably sullen. While speaking, she glanced up at the dark sky before sighing deeply. In the same movement, dark blue hair emerged and her features became more refined. She had transformed into a different person.

She seemed to dislike wearing shoes. She removed them once more and walked barefoot. Strangely, though, her feet never touched the ground but hovered slightly above it.

She hummed a nameless tune as if searching for a sense of belonging in this mundane world. Suddenly, her expression changed and she quickly reverted to her mortal appearance. A few seconds later, a shadow abruptly descended, harshly striking toward the girl’s face.

“Susu, how often have I told you not to go out? Don’t you know how dangerous it is outside!?” The shadow finally revealed itself to be a figure in black robes. Her clothing obscured her features but not her graceful figure. It was clear she was familiar with Susu.

The girl called Susu didn’t say a word and made no effort to argue back. She seemed to have grown numb to this way of life.

“Humans are dangerous. Aren’t you the one who knows this best? Why don’t I just turn them all into my slaves? That way, no one would ever hurt us.” The shadow figure removed her cloak, revealing a pair of fox ears. She appeared undeniably alluring, with sharp eyes and a genuinely wicked expression.

Susu remained silent, wearing the same sullen look as before.

Seeing Susu’s expression, the kitsune softened her tone. “Alright, let’s go back.” She reached out to take Susu’s hand but Susu pulled away. The kitsune hesitated but didn’t push the matter. She sniffed at the air. “You spoke to a human again? I’ve told you, that if they knew your true nature, they’d only seek to use you. No one in this world but me cares about you.”

As the kitsune rambled on, Susu’s silence deepened. Her thoughts drifted back to the encounter with Ye Wenxin. She wanted to warn the kitsune about Demon Lord Gu Qingcheng. But the throbbing pain on her face served as a reminder. The kitsune was not much different from the humans she so loathed.

Everyone always used her, the living book, to fulfill their ambitions. Susu’s eyes dimmed. She heard the kitsune complain about her unpleasant expression again. “You shouldn’t keep that sour look on your face. No man would find that attractive.”

Susu forced a faint smile. She was different from the kitsune who enjoyed toying with humans. She was just a book. Her purpose was merely to be a book. The kitsune, however, was a true egalitarian. She always encouraged Susu to pursue love.

But how could a book ever fall in love with anything? Suxu thought helplessly. The kitsune kept chattering in her ear. Susu longed for the days when she was still a motionless fox kit who couldn’t speak.

If only she hadn’t turned that fox kit into the current kitsune out of loneliness.

Susu sighed inwardly as she looked up at the dark clouds. She thought about all the trouble the kitsune had caused. The book girl had a mind but lacked the power to stop her. The kitsune was aware of Susu’s intentions, so she had kept cultivators from entering Liu City to change the situation. This had been dragging on for three years now.

The passage of time made the kitsune forget her original purpose in gaining a human form. She had only wanted to be with the one she loved…

However, Ye Wenxin was unaware of these intricacies. She continued wandering around, trying to find the kitsune’s lair but to no avail. Instead, she discovered the place was filled with foxes disguised as humans. Their numbers could form an entire army. It appeared that Liu City had kept a low profile for a grand plan the kitsune was about to execute.

Ye Wenxin chose not to slaughter the foxes. There were too many, and they smelled horrible. She didn’t linger long and soon returned to the inn. Oddly, the odor on her seemed to displease Fairy Fengya greatly. Unprecedentedly, she took out the water she had used earlier to cleanse the distinct stench off Ye Wenxin.

While ordinary people might not notice it, the smell was intolerable for cultivators, especially for someone as fond of cleanliness as Fairy Fengya. Even after she had removed the scent, Fairy Fengya uncharacteristically refused to share a bed with Ye Wenxin.

Ye Wenxin sulked but didn’t force it. She called on the furballs to form a makeshift bed and fell asleep amidst their fluffiness.

As dawn arrived, Fairy Fengya reverted to her child form. Ye Wenxin used her water again and carefully touched her. Fairy Fengya frowned slightly. It looked like the smell still bothered her.

During the day, kitsune disguised as humans wandered around. They were stinking up the entire Liu City. The raw food was probably for them. This then led to the strange change in people’s tastes. It wasn’t like the jiangshi filled Yangzhou City. On a fundamental level, however, this place was dead.

Ye Wenxin observed in silence. She held Fairy Fengya’s hand as they strolled around the street, buying some everyday items for her. Even if they weren’t necessary, Fairy Fengya might need to experience living in the academy for a while. If the chance arose, Ye Wenxin hoped Fairy Fengya could kill the kitsune, helping her complete the mission smoothly.

A plan was forming in Ye Wenxin’s mind as she repeatedly advised Fairy Fengya. Suddenly, she noticed Wu Yong hurriedly approaching from a distance. He first greeted Ye Wenxin, but when he looked at Fairy Fengya, his eyes nearly popped out in surprise. The man didn’t dare believe how beautiful a girl in her teens could be.

Children’s features were typically not fully developed. Their childish looks often diminished their beauty. However, Fairy Fengya was different. Wu Yong almost drooled as he looked at her. Ye Wenxin frowned slightly, suddenly regretting making Fairy Fengya go undercover.

But things had already been set in motion. Ye Wenxin could only go with the flow. She was also musing how to disguise herself as a parent and spend a few days at the academy. This way, she could help Fairy Fengya and look for Teacher Asuka before she completely forgot about her.
