After Lu Tao finished recounting his experiences, Doctor Tian Qi remained silent for a moment before asking, “Do you have any memories of his presence?”
“No,” Lu Tao frowned slightly.
“Whenever he takes over my body, I have no memory of what he does, nor can I sense it.”
Doctor Tian Qi noted, “It seems this is quite different from a typical case of dual personalities. In some conditions, there is an awareness of the other’s actions, but no control. It’s like two souls living in one body, but when one uses the body, the other is forced to sleep. What triggers you to regain control of the body? How does it feel?”
Lu Tao thought for a moment and then said, “It’s like waking up from sleep, and then I’m myself again.”
Doctor Tian Qi began recording and asked, “Do you realize immediately upon waking that he had taken over your body, or do you infer it from other details?”
“I know it switched to him, but only after waking do I realize how much time has passed.”
“So, you know the body was switched, but you’re unaware of what was done or how much time had passed after the switch?”
Lu Tao paused, then said, “Yes.” He suddenly thought of something and turned to ask Fei Li, “Fei Li, didn’t he ask you anything?”
By logical deduction, “that Lu Tao” wouldn’t have memory of this period; his last memory would be of saving Ai Xue. He must have been confused about his situation, and the most likely person he would ask is Fei Li.
Fei Li replied, “No.”
“Oh, that’s really strange.”
“It is a bit strange,” Fei Li adjusted his glasses.
“According to you, he was in control during the riot. Knowing the General as I do, he would have prioritized solving the problem, which he did. But after that, he should have come to ask me. Yet, it seems he chose to return to the hotel first, and something might have held him up from contacting me.”
Lu Tao thought about what could have detained “him” and felt a twinge of sourness in his heart. Though they shared the same body, he felt intense jealousy toward his other persona.
He could almost imagine, after such a traumatic event, his little wife seeking comfort, probably throwing herself into “Lu Tao’s” arms the moment he entered the room, acting coy, and maybe even performing fellatio, given his bruised lips the next day.
And he was screwed twice! Wasn’t it agreed to be cold and abusive to the point of driving one’s partner to divorce? How could he do such things?
Doctor Tian Qi glanced at the computer screen and calmly reminded, “General Lu Tao, your emotions seem unstable. Did you think of something specific?”
“No.”
The questioning essentially ended there. Doctor Tian Qi began adjusting his experiment data, confident that Lu Tao’s primary personality would emerge again. He said, “According to the data, the dissolution of the neurotoxin in your brain is speeding up. Perhaps he will truly return in less than two months.” He paused, “I apologize for underestimating your willpower at the beginning.”
“That soon?” Lu Tao was startled.
Doctor Tian Qi said, “I don’t think you need to feel sad. In reality, you two are essentially the same person; it’s just that you don’t share memories.”
“I’m sorry, I can’t agree with that.” Lu Tao stood up, bid farewell to Doctor Tian Qi, and left with Fei Li.
In a deserted corridor, Lu Tao asked, “Fei Li, how do you view the marital relationship between Cheng Jin and the former Lu Tao?”
Fei Li, unsurprised by the question, replied with his usual calm, “You finally couldn’t resist asking?”
Lu Tao said, “I didn’t ask before not because I didn’t care, but because I had already figured out most of it myself. I know they initially married because Cheng Jin forced the marriage, causing our grandmother to become unable to walk. I also know Cheng Jin’s personality used to be haughty, not an ideal partner. But now, he has changed; his temperament is much better, very polite, and he’s hardworking, learning crafts…” Thinking of his little wife, Lu Tao’s tone involuntarily softened, “and very cute.”
Hearing these last words, Fei Li’s lips twitched slightly before returning to normal.
“I believe the previous General must have noticed Mr. Cheng’s changes.”
Lu Tao narrowed his eyes, “And then? He remained indifferent?”
“Not exactly.” Fei Li thought for a moment before continuing, “Originally, the punishment for the Cheng family involved confiscating all their assets and expelling them from the Imperial Planet, though Mr. Cheng was not included. The previous General, after hearing this, went to see the Minister of Criminal Justice.”
Lu Tao raised an eyebrow, “Grandma?”
“Yes. I’m not clear on the specifics of their conversation, but I’m sure he wasn’t there to bribe, as the General didn’t bring any gifts, nor were there any extra transactions recorded. Afterward, the case was reconsidered, leading to the subsequent verdict.” Fei Li continued, “I’m not sure what role the previous General played, but in the end, the Cheng family, despite their hardships, remained. If it weren’t for Mr. Cheng falling ill, they would probably be living decently by now.”
Lu Tao was still dissatisfied, “He didn’t know about the illness?”
“It took a long time before he found out.” Fei Li shrugged, “But he seemed to take no action, which I can understand. The General’s view of them wasn’t favorable, and not kicking someone when they’re down is already moral. To actively help them, he probably wouldn’t be willing, especially since Mr. Cheng never approached him.”
“What an unfit partner.” Lu Tao muttered, then whispered, “I really don’t want to relinquish my body to him.”
He soon looked again at Fei Li, “You haven’t answered my initial question.”
Fei Li calmly said, “As a subordinate, I shouldn’t speculate on my superior’s private matters, so I won’t comment.”
“You really are watertight.” The two had already left the Military Hospital and boarded a spacecraft. It was nearly 10 PM, and though they had only been on Planet Sunshine for a few days, Lu Tao had grown accustomed to it, finding it hard to adjust back.
Fei Li barely perceptibly smiled, “Thank you for the compliment.”
Lu Tao sat down and continued, “Why did Cheng Jin file for divorce? He endured for seven years, and it seemed his feelings hadn’t diminished at all, so why would he suddenly have such thoughts?”
“I don’t know.”
Lu Tao frowned, sounding unhappy, “That guy… he wouldn’t have been cheating, would he?”
“Please don’t speculate about yourself in that way,” Fei Li said, setting the flight destination and speed. Then he sat beside Lu Tao, “I can vouch for that. Since I’ve been with the General, his private life has been very clean, with no flirtations or affairs. He might not be a good partner, but he’s definitely a loyal one.”
Hearing this, if it weren’t for his “capabilities,” Lu Tao might have wondered if the past Lu Tao was impotent.
Unable to get an answer, he grew anxious. In such moments, he wished he could eliminate the primary personality, allowing himself to stay with his little wife forever. In reality, he would eventually disappear, the cold man would return, becoming the memory-recovered version, and his personality would be as cold and stern as before, ignoring Cheng Jin. Then, would Cheng Jin choose to file for divorce again? Where would he go then?
Lu Tao was already contemplating whether to transfer all the money in his account to Cheng Jin before he disappeared. Fei Li, hearing this, showed no surprise, simply stating seriously, “That won’t work, General.”
“Why not?”
“Large transfers require financial institution approval to prevent black-market transactions.” The Imperial Planet strives to create a crime-free environment, so certain areas, especially fund transfers, are strictly scrutinized. Not only large amounts but even small ones undergo checks, though the process is brief enough not to disrupt daily life. This measure has indeed prevented many criminal cases, as most involve monetary transactions.
“Wouldn’t a transfer to my own partner be approved?”
“Maybe for others, but not for you,” Fei Li said.
“Your current situation is already recorded, and large transactions would lead the system to deem your judgment unsound, thus they would be rejected.”
Lu Tao was visibly upset, “Then what if I want to open a joint account with Cheng Jin?”
“If the divorce application is approved, the joint account would also be automatically canceled. I believe, given Mr. Cheng’s character, he wouldn’t take advantage of the situation to transfer your assets.”
Indeed, he wouldn’t. Cheng Jin was incredibly well-behaved now, with a strong sense of self-reliance, no longer the pampered young master he once was. Lu Tao even felt that if he truly left “himself,” Cheng Jin would still manage well.
His behavior, so careful as if he were stealing time, made it easy for Lu Tao to imagine that once he “recovered his memory” and reverted to his former self, Cheng Jin would once again file for divorce.
The spacecraft soon arrived home. The villa, not particularly luxurious, was lit up. Lu Tao stepped inside, and the little robot, sensing his return, ran over joyfully, as if eager to give him a massage. Lu Tao smiled and patted the robot’s round head, saying, “Go rest now.”
The robot returned to its charging room, and the house quieted down, with no sign of Cheng Jin. However, the items they brought back had been neatly arranged and packed into several beautiful gift boxes. Lu Tao walked over and saw that Cheng Jin had written notes and stuck them on the boxes, obviously planning to give them away. Grandmother, father, brother, Grandma You Si, Ai Xue, Yurika, and even Fei Li had one.
“If I had known, I would have just asked Fei Li to take his when he came in,” Lu Tao muttered, his lips curving into a smile, as he walked toward the bedroom.
