Application For Divorce
AFP Chapter 68: Enemies Present

Cheng Jin still felt uneasy about the possibility of his husband regaining his memory, especially after hearing him mention another visit to the Military hospital. For the first time, he proactively asked, “Can I come with you?”

The abnormal behavior Lu Tao had exhibited in the past few days left a mark on him. Even though he wasn’t the brightest, he knew that amnesia symptoms should recover gradually, and it was very likely that his husband was currently in the process of recovery. Hence, occasionally, his actions and words might resemble the General from before. Feeling uncertain, Cheng Jin wanted to ask the doctor privately about the exact timeline of his husband’s recovery.

He knew he had to leave before Lu Tao fully recovered. Having tasted his husband’s tenderness, sweetness, and pampering, the thought of returning to the past coldness was unbearable for Cheng Jin. Since he had to leave, he wanted to do so with good memories.

Lu Tao hesitated for a moment. “Don’t you still have orders to fulfill?”

“I finished them last night,” Cheng Jin replied eagerly. “Is it against the rules if I go with you? I remember the Military hospital has strict management, but I’m really worried about you. You’ve been going to the hospital quite frequently lately.”

Lu Tao initially wanted to find an excuse to refuse, but seeing Cheng Jin’s expression, he couldn’t bear to. Pinching his cheek, he chuckled. “It’s just some other business as well. Let’s go together, but don’t wander around when we’re there. You probably won’t be able to enter the examination room, is that okay?”

“That’s fine. I just want to ask Doctor Gelson about your condition.”

“What condition?” Lu Tao raised an eyebrow suggestively, leaning in close and whispering in his ear, “Sexual performance? I can prove that to you anytime.”

“I-it’s not that…” Cheng Jin blushed from the teasing but couldn’t help but close his eyes and respond sweetly when his husband kissed him.

Upon arriving at the hospital, Cheng Jin was surprised to see Fei Li already there. “So, every time you come for a check-up, Mr. Fei Li comes too?”

Fei Li adjusted his glasses. “Mr. Cheng, as the General’s secretary, this is part of my job.” He added, “Mr. Cheng, I have already scheduled an appointment with Doctor Gelson for you. Would you like to see him now?”

Cheng Jin nodded slightly and looked at his husband unconsciously. Lu Tao said, “Go ahead, I’ll head into the examination room.”

“Okay.”

Cheng Jin had been to the Military hospital several times before, where security was always strict, as it represented imperial-level medical technology. Only top government or military officials could receive treatment here, inaccessible even to the wealthiest civilians. But this time, Cheng Jin noticed that the security seemed even tighter.

Soldiers armed with advanced weapons stood every three meters, and all sorts of detection equipment were fully operational. During the short walk, Cheng Jin was scanned twice and subjected to a manual search. Seeing Cheng Jin’s nervousness and confusion, Fei Li unusually offered some reassurance. “Mr. Cheng, don’t worry. This isn’t targeted at you. Recently, a high-profile individual was admitted for treatment, so additional security was deployed to prevent spies from infiltrating.”

“Oh…” Cheng Jin breathed a sigh of relief. Curious but restraining himself, he didn’t ask who the “high-profile individual” was. With seventy-two inhabited planets under human control, where the Imperial Planet was the capital and the seat of the World Government, anyone treated here was a high official. However, those considered “high-profile” held especially significant status. Even if he asked, Fei Li likely wouldn’t answer, so Cheng Jin chose not to inquire further.

Finally reaching Doctor Gelson’s office, Cheng Jin received a warm welcome. Sitting in a comfortable chair, he tensed up and took a sip of water before saying, “Doctor, I came to ask about my husband’s condition.”

Doctor Gelson smiled. “Which aspect would you like to know about, Mr. Cheng?”

Cheng Jin fidgeted with his fingers. “I want to know… during the examinations, has there been any instance where my husband showed signs of recovering his memory?” He attempted to phrase it more appropriately. “Like… occasional or intermittent signs?”

Doctor Gelson’s expression remained unchanged as he responded. “Mr. Cheng, since you ask this, have you observed any unusual behavior from the General?”

Cheng Jin hesitated, recalling a recent incident, and finally said, “He… the day before yesterday, when he came home, he greeted our household robot in a way that was very similar to… no, identical to his old self…” He quickly added, “But then he was back to normal right away, so I thought it might be a coincidence, but I’m not reassured, especially since he has been visiting the hospital frequently.”

“General Lu is part of an experimental data collection,” Doctor Gelson explained gently, then lied, “From what we’ve detected so far, there are indeed signs of gradual recovery. He may not recall past memories immediately, but his physical memory might awaken first. So, if you notice anything unusual, there’s no need to worry.” The matter of Lu Tao developing a “second personality” due to toxins was not widely known, as the experiment was ongoing and confidential, even to Cheng Jin, who was Lu Tao’s spouse.

Cheng Jin’s eyes dimmed, and his voice became dry. “So you mean… he will soon recover completely?”

“That’s generally the case. First, the physical memories revive, followed by the mental memories. General Lu will soon be a completely healthy individual.” Doctor Gelson smiled, seeing Cheng Jin’s distinctly unhappy face, and sighed inwardly. This marriage seemed headed for a stalemate again.

Cheng Jin managed a forced smile. “Well, that’s… good.” He fell silent, his mind overwhelmed with panic, and after what felt like an eternity, Doctor Gelson stood up. “Mr. Cheng, I need to check on my patients. You can rest here. General Lu will come to find you after he’s done.”

“Thank you.”

The office was silent after Doctor Gelson closed the door behind him. Cheng Jin sat motionless, finding even moving difficult, his heart filled with sorrow.

He was about to lose his husband.

Tears uncontrollably filled his eyes, then fell from his large, beautiful eyes, leaving two trails on his pale cheeks. Mechanically, Cheng Jin activated his light screen, and in the marriage column, seeing his spouse’s name made his heart ache again.

His previous consideration of divorce was recorded in the system, and if he had proceeded with the application then, their marital relationship might have already been dissolved. His system now included an option to apply for divorce online. Cheng Jin unconsciously clicked on it, seeing a warm prompt at the top of the screen: After a system evaluation, your marital relationship is rated as “extremely poor.” To proceed with a divorce, simply submit an application, and the system will approve it within 1-3 business days.

Below was the application button.

Cheng Jin’s breathing became erratic, his fingers trembled, almost uncontrollably clicking on it, when suddenly he heard a noise behind him. Turning around, he was shocked to see the previously closed door opened a crack of about twenty to thirty centimeters and then gently closed again under his watch.

Hiding the light screen, Cheng Jin’s discomfort turned into fright.

With no wind and no one around, how could the door open and close by itself?

Could it be…

Cheng Jin’s scalp tingled with fear, but he soon reassured himself that it must be some scientific setup, perhaps something Doctor Gelson installed to keep the air fresh in the room.

Just as Cheng Jin relaxed, a loud alarm suddenly blared overhead, each burst piercing as if to rupture his eardrums. Cheng Jin frowned and covered his ears. Before the alarm ceased, the door was forcibly pushed open, and a squad of guards rushed in, guns aimed inside, one directly at Cheng Jin’s forehead. Frozen in fear, his blood almost curdling, the alarm stopped, and the lead guard asked in an authoritative tone, “Sir, did you notice any unusual activity here about a minute ago?”

“I-I-I…” Cheng Jin stammered, tongue-tied, unable to form a complete sentence.

Noticing his fear, the guard lowered the gun aimed at his forehead and said sternly, “We are looking for an assassin who attempted to murder the Chief Administrative Officer. Please cooperate.”

Hearing the words “Chief Administrative Officer,” Cheng Jin was further shocked, his eyes widening. In the World Government, besides the President, the highest-ranking officials were the two Chief Administrative Officers of the North and South, followed by various department heads. Even the military’s highest-ranking officer, the Marshal, ranked below the Chief Administrative Officers, who effectively managed half of humanity.

That someone dared to attempt assassination on such a significant figure was astonishing!

Unable to speak, Cheng Jin’s stunned silence made the guards suspect he was pretending. Just as they were about to interrogate him further, two people hurried over, the leader clearly out of breath from rushing. The guards, slightly surprised to see him, quickly saluted. “General, Major General.”

Cheng Jin, seeing Lu Tao and Ai Xue arriving, finally let out a sigh of relief, though still overwhelmed by the shock. As Lu Tao glanced at him, he then asked the guards, “What’s going on?”

“The Chief Administrative Officer was attacked, and we are searching for the assassin. We came here after finding this gentleman acting suspiciously, so we were questioning him.”

Lu Tao coldly glanced at their raised guns.
