Chapter 510: All That’s Left is a Wife
Ye Wenxin was reluctant to leave. She planned to observe how Fairy Fengya’s first day at the academy would go. As she was about to climb over the wall for a sneak peek, she sensed an invisible barrier. It was a new type of barrier array that Long Qingyue had never taught her.
To avoid alerting the enemy, Ye Wenxin had no choice but to give up for now. She returned to the inn and started packing her things to leave. She was also considering how to be Ye Shengxiao and the study companion simultaneously.
Sword Ghost was invisible to ordinary people, so she couldn’t participate. But if an ordinary person impersonated Madam Ye Shengxiao, people would easily see through it.
Ye Wenxin walked along and soon arrived at the remote village.
“Miss, how are things in Liu City?”
Ye Wenxin saw the haggard-looking matron among the villagers gathered around her. Suddenly, she thought of refining some disguise pills. That should last for a while without getting seen through.
She shared her plan to infiltrate Cosmos Academy with the matron. The matron was excited and immediately agreed to accompany Ye Wenxin to Liu City the next day. Ye Wenxin then went over the details of how to impersonate Ye Shengxiao.
Suddenly, a scream pierced the air.
Inside the house, Ye Wenxin was startled. She had been on high alert, worried that the kitsune might have sensed something. The abrupt scream made her ears ache. Ye Wenxin quickly shut off her divine sense and went outside to investigate.
She found an elderly man sitting on the ground, facing a black cat.
But this cat was bigger than the average lion. It had blood-red eyes and a bell tied around its neck. The bell jingled crisply as the cat moved.
“A monster!”
“Oh heavens, are we going to die here?”
The villagers looked on in fear. A demonic beast appearing while the kitsune problem remained unresolved filled everyone with dread. Ye Wenxin was about to say something but the matron went up to confront the cat. She urged Ye Wenxin to flee.
Ye Wenxin inwardly sighed. But she also thought the villagers had managed to avoid the kitsune’s control thanks to their kind hearts.
Although she wasn’t a good person, she was willing to do good by these people. With that thought in mind, Ye Wenxin stepped forward.
The giant black cat suddenly charged toward her with incredible speed. The villagers couldn’t even grab their weapons in time. But the black demon cat stopped short and affectionately rubbed against Ye Wenxin’s hand.
“Big Baby, have you been well?” This cat was none other than Long Qingyue’s black cat companion.
As if the cat had found its target, its blood-red eyes returned to normal. It shrank back to regular size and nestled in Ye Wenxin’s arms. The cat acted overly affectionate, still holding some fear toward her.
Ye Wenxin began to frisk the black cat’s body. She was trying to find a bag of holding, but suddenly discovered that this black cat was also a female. Ye Wenxin suspected that her special ability would one day drive her to do something crazy toward it.
But the black cat seemed oblivious. It gradually melted under Ye Wenxin’s gentle caresses. Lifting its rear high, it eagerly craved more pets. This was the nature of cats. Even the proudest one couldn’t resist the touch of nimble hands.
“Looks like the things are ready.” Ye Wenxin finally found the hidden small bag.
She figured Long Qingyue must be incredibly bored. Her best friend had made clothes for this demonic beast and a miniature bag of holding. Strangely, despite its small size, this bag had the same capacity as an average bag of holding.
Ye Wenxin explained everything to the villagers before returning with the black cat in her arms. She opened the bag of holding and a pile of items spilled out.
She felt bemused looking at the rare herbs and spirit stones.
“Free gear and money. All that’s left is a wife… No, wait, Yue’er did send me one.”
Ye Wenxin muttered to herself while eyeing the items. After rummaging through the pile, she found a uniquely shaped box. It should contain the corpse worm’s core, now refined.
Due to the dangerous nature of the corpse race’s cores, Long Qingyue had promised to help purify it. Ye Wenxin hadn’t expected it to be done so quickly. A sweet fragrance wafted out when she opened the box. It smelled like peach blossoms.
Ye Wenxin couldn’t help but swallow hard. She sensed that this core must have been altered somehow. It smelled even sweeter than regular pills. She was about to grab it, but suddenly sensed movement behind her. She warily turned to see what it was and was surprised to find a figure hovering in the air.
Her face was as delicate as peach blossoms, framed by long dark-brown hair, and she wore simple clothes. She seemed to notice Ye Wenxin’s gaze and let out an ‘ah’ before disappearing again. Ye Wenxin didn’t have time to react. But she was sure this person wasn’t Sword Ghost, so…
“Peach blossom demon, come out! Let’s have a showdown!” Ye Wenxin immediately figured that the stunning beauty the core’s fragrance had drawn out was the peach blossom demon.
However, no matter how much she shouted, the demon didn’t reappear. The only response was a sharp pain in her back.
“If you really hate me, come fight me! Stop hiding inside my body!” Ye Wenxin grumbled in frustration.
The peach blossom demon seemed to have blocked out her calls, as she gave no further response. Ye Wenxin gave up and turned her attention back to the core in the box. She intended to swallow it immediately, but noticed a white corner sticking out.
It was probably a note from Long Qingyue. Concerned that it might relate to the core’s consumption, Ye Wenxin unfolded the note. There was a line of elegant handwriting on it.
[Don’t forget.]
The note was puzzling. Ye Wenxin didn’t understand what Long Qingyue was referring to. Since there were no specific warnings about the core, she swallowed it. After a while, she didn’t notice any changes, so she stopped thinking about it.
Closing her eyes, Ye Wenxin rested, waiting for the next day to arrive…
The matron woke early in the morning and dressed in relatively luxurious clothes. Ye Wenxin had her take a disguise pill to copy her appearance. After about two hours of effort, the matron had reshaped her face to look roughly eight parts similar to Ye Shengxiao.
But that was probably the matron’s limit. Ye Wenxin didn’t push her any further. She instructed her to wait outside, and then found a relatively simple outfit.
She transformed herself into the appearance of a thirteen-year-old Ye Wenxin. Her height shrank from 170 cm to around 150 cm. It made her look significantly childish.
When she went outside, the matron was already waiting. She nervously followed behind Ye Wenxin, making it seem like reversed mother-daughter roles.
Ye Wenxin had to remind her several times before the woman finally got the hang of her new identity. As they walked together, Ye Wenxin curiously asked about the matron’s background.
