Chapter 209: Disappointed in Them
Su Wan slowly straightened her back, her expression calm and composed, looking at the Regent without any waves of emotion. “You only remember the pain you bear while neglecting the suffering of your offspring, who have also lost both parents.”
She curled her lips into a cold smile. “Your lives are yours to control; if you want to live, I’ll treat you. If you wish to die, then I’ll bury you together.”
Not wanting to hear any further explanations from the Regent, Su Wan stood up and returned to her own chamber, throwing herself into the bed, her anger having nowhere to vent.
In order to heal Ji Xuan, Su Wan poured all her effort into diligently studying medicine, fearing that she might not be able to save his life. For the past few months, she had been on high alert, not daring to let her guard down for even a moment.
Now, the situation looked promising; Qi Min’s condition was not too bad either. Su Wan’s mind was filled with treatment plans, and once everything was finalized, she planned to resolve the mother-child Gu at the most opportune moment, ensuring a permanent solution.
Ji Xuan’s words had wounded Su Wan’s heart.
He didn’t want to resolve the mother-child Gu before Qi Min got better; he had made up his mind to die with her.
At that moment, the taut string in Su Wan’s mind snapped.
She could understand Ji Xuan’s feelings, but she could not forgive him.
She didn’t want to be understanding or empathetic; Su Wan was exhausted, too exhausted, and just wanted to indulge her own temperament in that moment.
That day, she didn’t go out to eat.
“Zhao’er, you didn’t have breakfast today, and if you skip lunch as well, you’ll harm your body.” Ji Xuan knocked on the door. Hearing no response from inside, he sighed, “Don’t be angry with your father. I was under a spell before and didn’t consider things thoroughly. I didn’t take your feelings into account. Your father would never take his life lightly, and your mother will be fine.”
Su Wan, feeling frustrated, pulled the blanket over her head.
“Father is wrong. Zhao’er, please come out; your father wants to apologize to you.” Ji Xuan knocked on the door again.
The room was quiet. Ji Xuan set the food down on the floor and did not speak again.
Ji Xuan stood at the door, and Su Wan ignored him.
If he didn’t want to live, why should she worry about him?
Not only did she skip lunch, but she also didn’t come out for dinner.
Ji Xuan looked at the table of cold food and then at the dark room, realizing that Su Wan was genuinely angry.
Luo Cheng glanced between his master and the young lady, scratching his head. “Will the young lady end up harming her body?”
Ji Xuan lowered his gaze and said quietly, “You go tell her that my chest hurts and that I might be having an episode.”
Luo Cheng’s eyes widened. Was he making up a lie to trick the young lady into coming out?
“I’ll go right away!” Luo Cheng left, and Ji Xuan instructed the palace maid to remove the cold dishes and replace them with a new spread.
Fifteen minutes later, Luo Cheng returned, his head hung low, hesitating to speak.
“Not willing to come out?” Ji Xuan furrowed his brow, unable to suppress his worry.
Luo Cheng carefully glanced at him and, with a strange expression, said, “I informed the young lady that you were having an episode. I waited there for a quarter of an hour, thinking you were about to collapse, so she hurried me to take you to see the female doctor.”
Ji Xuan rubbed his forehead. “Luo Cheng, how do you usually coax your daughter?”
“By letting her ride on my back, buying her candied hawthorn, pretty skirts, and hair ties,” Luo Cheng replied, listing them off with a smile that he couldn’t help but wear. “She loves watching the circus. Whenever she’s upset, I take her there, and she always ends up giggling and calling me ‘Daddy.’”
The Regent was stunned, gazing into the dark room where Su Wan was, finally understanding her feelings.
Everything Luo Cheng mentioned was about a child’s early years, filled with the love and pampering of both parents.
But Su Wan’s childhood had only been with Old Lady Su.
