Chapter 9
“Hello, I’m Yuyu from the Department of Special Paranormal Affairs. We’ve met at the office before.”
Upon reading this message, Yue Yin looked up in disbelief, staring at her post in a daze.
On her computer screen, a group of curious onlookers were betting on when she’d end up in trouble, with some even claiming they had reported her.
She looked down again at the message from the relevant authorities, and her heart raced.
Did someone actually report her? Could the authorities work that quickly?
Could she really have broken the law? Was her good citizen reputation now at risk?
Just as Yue Yin was questioning her legal standing, another message arrived.
“It’s related to the case involving malevolent spirits from a few days ago. Could you come to the bureau?”
“Oh, and the captain wanted to thank you. Without you, there might have been even more casualties that day.”
Oh, so it wasn’t an arrest! That was a relief.
Otherwise, she might have had to resort to drastic measures, and that would have been such a hassle.
Feeling relieved, Yue Yin smiled. Today, she remained a law-abiding citizen!
With a cooperative spirit, Yue Yin headed to the paranormal department.
“We apologize for the delay. We’ve been busy investigating the case of Containment Unit A63 and only had time to reach out today.”
Seeing her puzzled look, Yuyu clarified, “A63 is that three-headed human-serpent creature we contained. It was a long process to transport it back and secure it.”
Yue Yin recalled Captain Li mentioning that since malevolent spirits can’t be destroyed, humans have taken to containing them as forbidden items to fight future evil.
Yuyu leaned in and whispered, “The captain said A63, now called Medusa, is formidable. It can influence and control other malevolent spirits within its domain, making them lose their sanity.”
Yue Yin smiled, “That’ll help you handle these cases much more effectively.”
Yuyu nodded seriously, “Absolutely. Thanks to you, we were able to prevent A City’s crisis and stop those people’s schemes. Who knows what might have happened otherwise!”
“We wanted to acknowledge your efforts, but the captain thought it best to keep your identity hidden to ensure your safety…”
Yueyin looked surprised. “Am I in danger?”
Captain Li appeared from another room, looking tired. “Your sudden appearance that day drew attention from not only us but also other organizations like the Xuanmen association.”
“The organization behind this incident remains unknown, so please be careful. I’m worried they might target you for revenge.”
This concern had been carefully considered by Captain Li before telling Yue Yin.
His expression turned serious, “There are around twenty registered A-Level ability users in the country, not including some from rogue organizations or the elusive S-Level ones.”
“These groups, supported by twisted beliefs and full of malevolent intentions, possess various forbidden items. Some even have A-Level items.”
“The powerful rogue organizations sometimes capture high-level ability users for sacrificial rituals to summon their deities.”
For the evil gods they worship, the flesh and blood of ability users are a valuable resource, and the stronger the ability, the more suitable it is to become a vessel.
With the organizations’ attention on her, Yue Yin’s danger was clear.
That’s why, as soon as A63 was secured, Captain Li reached out to warn her, even before identifying the group behind it.
“We know you’re strong, an A-Level ability user, but facing such powerful groups, caution is necessary.”
“If you notice anything unusual, contact us immediately. To ensure your safety, we’ll assign Yuyu to watch over you.”
By the time Yue Yin returned from the special department, it was evening. Entering the Shen household, she found a warm family scene.
Her mother, Bai Xiulian, gently encouraged her older daughter to drink some soup to stay healthy. Her older daughter feigned reluctance while joking with her little brother.
It was a harmonious family moment, filled with laughter, until Yue Yin walked in.
She remembered that her body’s previous owner’s mother, Bai Xiulian, and sister, Shen Baozhu, had recently returned, just as the younger Shen had mentioned.
In the living room, Shen Baozhu looked uneasy. “Aunt Bai, I didn’t come home when Yue Yin had her accident. Do you think she’ll be upset?”
Bai Xiulian frowned, worried Shen Baozhu might misunderstand, and quickly responded, “She wouldn’t blame you. None of this would’ve happened if she hadn’t insisted on getting a part-time job…”
After going missing years ago, the previous owner had been taken in by a less fortunate family that couldn’t afford her education. She’d been working part-time while attending school since then, even after being found and brought back to the Shen family.
It wasn’t long ago that she was kidnapped on her way home from work and barely escaped.
Hearing Bai Xiulian’s reassurance, Shen Baozhu relaxed and smiled. “I’m glad. I was worried she might hold it against me.”
As Yue Yin stepped inside and heard this, she raised an eyebrow.
Shen Baozhu was her sister and the novel’s protagonist. She was beautiful, kind, and universally adored as the true daughter of the Shen family.
The maid, Mrs. Li, hurried over. “Miss Yue Yin, you’re back. There are some leftovers in the kitchen…”
Though she hadn’t arrived yet, they had already started dinner.
Even the household staff treated her differently, and there wasn’t a single dish on the table she liked.
Bai Xiulian showed no awareness and instead scolded, “It’s pouring outside. Why are you so late? Come eat.”
Yue Yin replied sarcastically, “You know it’s raining heavily, yet you ask why I’m late?”
Bai Xiulian was stunned, unused to her usually obedient daughter talking back.
Yue Yin glanced at the table and told her maid, Xiao He, “Make me a mild dish and bring it to my room.”
Previously, Xiao He might have refused with a snide remark, but after witnessing what happened to Mrs. Zhang, she complied immediately.
The other maids, including Mrs. Li, watched with wary expressions.
Yue Yin headed upstairs, and Shen Baozhu followed, looking troubled.
“I heard about Mrs. Zhang,” Shen Baozhu said softly. She was beautiful, with gentle eyes and an endearing frown.
She looked at Yue Yin with a gentle expression, “Don’t feel too guilty about it.”
Yue Yin, perplexed, replied, “Why would I?”
Shen Baozhu hesitated, “Aunt Zhang told me she was only advising you not to stay out too late. She said you called her a mere servant…”
There was a hint of reproach in her voice. “We’re a modern family, and Aunt Zhang has been with us for so long that we see her as family. I don’t understand why you’d feel that way.”
Even though Yue Yin knew from the novel that Shen Baozhu was sweet and kind-hearted, it still surprised her.
Yue Yin scratched her head, “Shen Baozhu, you’re acting as if you’re salty over nothing.”
Shen Baozhu’s cheeks flushed, “How could you say that?”
Yueyin replied, “Aunt Zhang said I was a burden and shouldn’t embarrass the Shen family. She was so upset, I almost wondered if she belonged to the Shen family herself.”
Shen Baozhu seemed taken aback, “Is this a misunderstanding? Aunt Zhang isn’t like that.”
Yue Yin looked at her with disbelief, “You think I’m lying? You’d rather believe a maid over me?”
“There were so many people present, even our little brother. You never asked for anyone else’s account. You came here accusing me based on one person’s word?”
Shen Baozhu was speechless, tears forming in her eyes.
Having seen Yue Yin’s changed demeanor, none of the other maids dared intervene, especially after what happened to Mrs. Zhang.
As Yueyin went into her room, the maids exchanged worried glances, unwilling to cross her.
In the kitchen, Mrs. Li shook her head. “People are just born with their fates.”
One of the others whispered, “If her father hadn’t died, she wouldn’t have to live like this…”
