Chapter 4
On the day of the grand wedding, the Sheng family’s front courtyard was filled with the sounds of a lively banquet. Since Huang Residence was the new bridal chamber of the Grand Princess, the entire Eastern Mansion where it was located had been cleaned out in advance, with all courtyards unoccupied to show respect for the Princess.
But in reality, it was to ensure that when Yan Donghuang’s poison took effect, no one would hear her cries. No matter what happened in Huang Residence, apart from Sheng Jing’an and Shen Yun, no one else would know.
In this way, they could shirk all responsibility if something happened in the future, claiming that the Princess was putting on airs and not allowing the Sheng family to approach her residence.
However, their cleverness backfired.
No one expected that even after being poisoned, Yan Donghuang would be completely unthreatened and dare to act so recklessly. Not only did she severely injure her husband, but she also sent people to mobilize troops into the mansion. When Old Madam Sheng heard that the Eastern Mansion was sealed off and her son had already retired, she suddenly had a bad premonition.
“Sealed off the Eastern Mansion?” Old Madam Sheng asked in shock, “Why was it suddenly sealed off?”
Nanny Tang replied, “They said the Duke was tired and needed to rest early, but his friends urged him to go out and drink with them. The Grand Princess got angry and directly sealed off the Eastern Mansion, not allowing the Duke to go out.”
Old Madam Sheng’s face darkened, “Impossible. Jing’an said Yan Donghuang would behave obediently after marrying into the Sheng family, treating herself as an ordinary wife and not putting on airs as a princess…”
“I don’t know,” Nanny Tang speculated, “Maybe it’s the first night of marriage, and the Grand Princess hasn’t completely put down her airs. Considering the joy of the wedding, the Duke didn’t want to have a falling out with her?”
Old Madam Sheng thought there was some truth to this.
After all, the Grand Princess had been leading troops for years and used to giving orders; having some temper was normal. However, she was married into the Sheng family by imperial decree. The emperor’s purpose was to strip her of her military power and make her a virtuous wife who would support her husband and teach her children so he wouldn’t tolerate her temper.
After the wedding, she would teach her the rules of being a wife and daughter-in-law.
“Keep an eye on things,” Old Madam Sheng turned to entertain the guests, “If anything happens, report to me immediately.”
“Yes.”
The day after the wedding, the newlyweds would serve tea to the elders.
Old Madam Sheng decided to set some rules for Yan Donghuang when they came to pay their respects to curb her arrogant temper. Even if she was a princess, she should have served her in-laws and behaved properly after getting married. Moreover, Yan Donghuang had already lost the emperor’s favor and protection, only holding the title of Grand Princess.
At this moment, in Huang Residence.
Yan Donghuang sat on a chair, coldly looking down at the two miserable figures on the ground, “The East Mansion is spacious, with courtyards arranged in an orderly manner. To show respect for me, the Sheng family cleared out all the courtyards in the Eastern Mansion to place my dowry. They were really thoughtful.”
Sheng Jing’an tried to get up from the ground, but as soon as he moved, Yan Donghuang kicked him down and stepped on his back, “Before this, I really thought you were being respectful.”
“Yan Donghuang…” Sheng Jing’an spoke in a miserable tone, gritting his teeth, “I am your husband. Are you going to kill your husband?”
“From the moment you handed me the poisoned wedding wine, you were just my enemy.” Yan Donghuang coldly looked at him, “I dare to kill the emperor, let alone a despicable person like you.”
Sheng Jing’an’s face turned pale, “Kill… kill the emperor?”
“What?” Yan Donghuang’s face showed a mocking smile, “Did you think I would be controlled by your Seven-Day Poison, kneeling on the ground, wagging my tail, and begging for an antidote instead of killing you all?”
Sheng Jing’an’s pupils contracted, finally realizing what a ruthless and decisive person he had provoked. He shouldn’t have exposed himself so early. He should have waited until the poison had invaded her lungs, slowly eating away at her martial arts and strength, leaving her powerless to resist, before telling her the truth. He shouldn’t have let her know about Shen Yun’s existence so early.
At this moment, Sheng Jing’an deeply regretted it. He was not regretting poisoning Yan Donghuang but regretting telling her the truth so early.
He was too careless.
One wrong step, and he was doomed.
Sheng Jing’an regretted it so much that his intestines turned green.
A painful groan reached his ears, and Sheng Jing’an turned his head with difficulty. He saw the once beautiful and charming Shen Yun now unrecognizable, her hair disheveled, her fair face crossed with two blood marks, her appearance ruined, and she trembled in fear.
Sheng Jing’an’s heart sank to the bottom. He suddenly turned his head to glare at Yan Donghuang, his tone filled with resentment: “She is pregnant, Yan Donghuang. How could you be so cruel?”
“Is the child she is carrying mine?” Yan Donghuang raised an eyebrow and asked, “Not to mention whose bastard it is. A pregnant woman who doesn’t think of accumulating blessings for her child but instead creates the vicious Seven-Day Intestinal Poison to harm others deserves any outcome.”
A mother with a vicious nature, her child shouldn’t come into this world.
Yan Donghuang clenched the whip in her hand, closed her eyes, and took a deep breath, “Sheng Jing’an, within an hour, my elite soldiers will surround the Sheng family. If you don’t reveal all the emperor and your schemes tonight, I will massacre the Sheng family tomorrow and lead troops into the palace. It’s worth it to take some people with me before I die.”
As she spoke, she still stepped heavily on Sheng Jing’an’s back.
This groom, who was so glorious during the day, the new head of the Sheng family, the youngest Duke of the Dayong Dynasty, was now lying on the ground in a miserable state, his dignity lost.
He couldn’t even escape from under a woman’s foot, let alone subdue her. He couldn’t even keep his composure while using schemes. It’s a wonder the emperor trusted him with such an important task.
Yan Donghuang lifted her foot, her tone cold, “Chang Lan.”
“Here,” Chang Lan responded respectfully.
“I have a few questions for the Prince Consort,” Yan Donghuang said indifferently, “Considering his deep affection for his secondary wife Shen Yun, she needs to cooperate.”
Chang Lan understood, “Yes.”
“Sheng Jing’an,” Yan Donghuang’s gaze was as sharp as a knife, staring at Sheng Jing’an’s miserable state, “Is there really an antidote for the Seven-Day Poison I took?”
Sheng Jing’an replied coldly, “Do you think I would lie to you?”
Yan Donghuang frowned, her beautiful eyes filled with hostility.
Chang Lan lifted the disheveled Shen Yun and, without a word, slapped her four times.
Slap, slap, slap, slap.
The crisp sound was chilling.
Shen Yun’s painful cries echoed in their ears, and Sheng Jing’an stiffened, glaring at Yan Donghuang, “Shen Yun is innocent. She is just a weak woman. Yan Donghuang, what do you want?”
