Chapter 38: You’re Worried About Me, Aren’t You?
Fu Huaizhou looked into her clear eyes but suddenly turned away. “Nothing, let’s go,” he said.
Ruan Li knew he wouldn’t say anything nice, so she stopped asking. Now she was starting to worry about her wrist, so she obediently followed behind Fu Huaizhou.
“Back to Yuyuan,” Fu Huaizhou instructed Assistant Qin, who was already waiting outside to start the car.
Ruan Li and Fu Huaizhou got into the elevator. She couldn’t help but keep asking, “What was it? Why didn’t you finish?”
Fu Huaizhou’s temple throbbed from her nagging. He raised his hand and gently pressed it on top of her head, “Quiet down.”
Ruan Li looked up at him, her height not too short either. Today, wearing high heels, she could just reach Fu Huaizhou’s chin. But the moment he pressed her head, it felt like all her authority disappeared.
“You’re worried about me, aren’t you?” Ruan Li teased, locking her eyes with his.
Fu Huaizhou lowered his gaze at her. Her dark hair, red lips, and striking features naturally carried a hint of charm when she spoke. Now, she was practically leaning toward him, just short of pulling on his clothes and getting right up in his face.
He sighed, a faint smile tugging at his lips. “Afraid you might try to scam me.”
Hearing this, Ruan Li immediately let go of his clothes, huffing as she moved to the other side of the spacious elevator. “I don’t need your company’s little compensation. Whoever wants to scam you can go ahead.”
“Eight million,” Fu Huaizhou casually remarked, his voice light in the quiet elevator.
After saying this, he gave Ruan Li a meaningful glance.
The next second, Ruan Li quickly moved closer, her eyes sparkling as she looked at him like a cat eyeing a fish snack, just shy of wagging her tail.
“I’d love to! Let me do it!”
The man beside her chuckled softly. Ruan Li was just about to stand on her toes to cover his mouth when the elevator chimed, and the doors opened.
Immediately, Ruan Li stood upright, acting as if she were a proper secretary, obediently standing next to Fu Huaizhou. She even felt Fu Huaizhou’s teasing glance cast her way.
The elevator doors opened to reveal a crowded lobby. It was lunchtime, and employees were returning from the company cafeteria, including a somewhat distracted Fu Xingchuan.
He stood amidst the crowd and froze for a moment when he saw the two stepping out of the elevator. “President Fu.”
The people around him quickly noticed them too. Everyone kept their eyes down, respectfully greeting “President Fu.”
Fu Huaizhou gave a slight nod, leading Ruan Li out of the elevator. As they passed Fu Xingchuan, he suddenly grabbed her wrist.
“Let go” Ruan Li almost screamed. It was as if he was trying to make sure her wrist would never heal, squeezing her so hard that she thought her bones might break.
Seeing her pained expression, Fu Xingchuan remembered the slap from earlier and fearfully let go. “I need to talk to you.”
Hearing her cry, Fu Huaizhou turned back and saw Fu Xingchuan’s hand just releasing her wrist. He immediately stepped between them.
“Uncle?” Fu Xingchuan was stunned, staring at the scene. When had his uncle and Ruan Li become so close? He thought that after the engagement was called off, the two families wouldn’t have much to do with each other.
Ruan Li naturally hid behind Fu Huaizhou, poking her head out to glare at Fu Xingchuan. Her voice was sharp, “I have nothing to say to you.”
Fu Xingchuan’s face immediately filled with embarrassment, though he figured there would be more opportunities later. “Where are you taking Ruan Li, Uncle?”
That question made both of them uncomfortable. Ruan Li scowled, “None of your business.”
Their engagement was off, and with everything that had happened recently, they were no longer even friends. But Fu Xingchuan’s question made it sound like Ruan Li was still his property.
Fu Huaizhou had no intention of wasting time here. His voice was cold, “Taking her to get her injury checked.”
The two of them turned and left. From behind, they looked like Ruan Li was emotionally speaking to Fu Huaizhou, and the usually stern man nodded in response.
Some of the employees nearby quietly gossiped, “I watched a bit of a livestream earlier. President Fu is so sweet to his secretary. He’s nothing like the stone faced man he is during meetings.”
“Right? Do you think the company’s going to announce a new Mrs. Fu?”
Several people whispered and giggled, but when they noticed Fu Xingchuan’s dark expression, they quickly fell silent. After all, the tension between Ruan Li and him in that livestream had been obvious.
“Aren’t we supposed to be going to the hospital?” Ruan Li asked as she recognized the familiar route, realizing they were heading to Yuyuan.
“I’ve called a doctor to come,” Fu Huaizhou explained, examining her swollen wrist, which had worsened after Fu Xingchuan’s grip.
His brows furrowed, and the air in the car grew heavy.
When they arrived at Yuyuan, the doctor was already there. He was an older traditional Chinese medicine practitioner with a simple, vintage medicine box slung over his shoulder. The man’s eyes widened slightly when he saw the girl next to Fu Huaizhou.
“Uncle Lin, please check her wrist,” Fu Huaizhou respectfully invited the man inside.
Ruan Li fidgeted nervously. She recognized the elderly doctor, as he had been taking care of Old Madam Fu’s health for years, so naturally, he knew her too.
Fu Huaizhou noticed her unease and gently pressed his hand on her shoulder. His voice was low, comforting, “It’s alright. I’ll handle everything.”
Hearing him, Ruan Li finally relaxed. After all, if someone as reliable as Fu Huaizhou wasn’t trustworthy in Jing City, then no one was. She sat down at the table, placing her wrist on it as instructed by the old doctor.
After a long moment of silence, Ruan Li’s heart sank, watching his expression.
“For the next two weeks, I’ll come by daily for acupuncture, along with some external treatments,” the old doctor finally said, glancing meaningfully at Fu Huaizhou. He recalled how Fu Huaizhou had once asked for non-harmful contraceptives now he understood why.
Fu Huaizhou’s face was solemn. “Will it affect her ability to draw or play piano in the future if we treat it properly?”
Ruan Li was surprised he still remembered that one time she played the piano at a banquet.
“If you want to avoid long-term issues, she needs to rest. Otherwise, it could affect her ability to do fine work later.”
Fu Huaizhou nodded slightly. “Please take good care of her, Uncle Lin.”
Ruan Li watched as Fu Huaizhou escorted the doctor out, likely arranging for her to stay at Yuyuan. She suddenly remembered that Old Madam and Old Master Fu were returning from their travels soon, and she felt a headache coming on.
Soon after, Fu Huaizhou returned and saw Ruan Li still in a daze. “Don’t worry. If Uncle Lin says it can be healed, there won’t be any lasting issues.”
Ruan Li nodded lightly.
“You won’t need to go back to that program. Just rest at home. And I’ll have the surveillance footage you asked for pulled up,” Fu Huaizhou said seriously.
Ruan Li recalled that earlier in the office, he had only seen the part where she argued with Fu Xingchuan and then put the phone down. He didn’t know what had happened after.
“Do you really believe me?” she asked curiously.
