Jiang Ning asked with a smile, “Doudou, do you like your current life now?”
Doudou answered without hesitation, “I like it.”
Although there are conflicts with her coworkers, she can deal with them easily and sometimes even find happiness in them.
The work is hard, but it allows her to find her own value.
The days spent drinking and eating were enjoyable, but spiritually it was lacking. Now, even though she’s tired and busy, she feels a sense of fulfillment she never felt before.
“Sister-in-law, I think it’s really good.”
Everyone has selfish desires, but undeniably, they are all striving for a better future, and firmly believe that life will get better and better in the future.
Jiang Ning smiled. Yes, she also wanted to start a new life.
That night, when Huo Yishen returned and saw Jiang Ning packing things, he couldn’t help but ask, “How did you feel after visiting the hospital today?”
With a hospital lacking in medical resources, how good could it be?
However, because of Ma Guangnian’s presence, people see hope again.
When Huo Yishen heard that Ma Guangnian had arrived, he couldn’t help but recall the days at the Traditional Chinese Medicine Research Institute. “How is Professor Li?”
Jiang Ning regrettably said, “Professor Li was too old. When he went to the military base, he got sick and didn’t make it through.”
Professor Li was a towering figure in the field of Traditional Chinese Medicine.Thinking of the anti-smog virus prescription he developed, it was unknown how many survivors he had saved. His death during the disaster was truly a great loss.
If he were still alive, the recovery of the Traditional Chinese Medicine would have been much faster.
Huo Yishen was very happy to learn that Jiang Ning decided to work in the hospital.
No one knows whether the natural disaster has ended, but life must go on.
Having a job can give people a sense of stability.
“That’s great, we’ll go to work together in the future.”
Jiang Ning sighed. She said that she would not go to work for the rest of her life, but here she was, going back to work.
Having gotten used to sleeping in, it was hard to get up early.
A limp Jiang Ning was pulled out of bed by Huo Yishen, who handed her a toothbrush with the toothpaste already squeezed out, “You can’t be late on your first day at work.”
She finally snapped out of it and rushed to get ready.
After rushing to catch the ferry, she fell asleep on Huo Yishen’s shoulder.
When they arrived at Area A, there was still plenty of time, so Huo Yishen sent her to the hospital entrance, “I’ll come pick you up after work.”
The hospital has two directors, one in charge of administration and the other in charge of academic matters.
Jiang Ning was working under Ma Guangnian. It’s really amazing how their paths are crossing again, as if she has returned to the days when she was still at the Research Institute.
Ma Guangnian was busy until late at night yesterday, and he had a thorough understanding of the situation in the hospital, so he assigned a task to Jiang Ning right away.
He has been studying traditional Chinese medicine all his life and has only a superficial understanding of Western medicine. Jiang Ning had worked with Old Hu for a while, and although she couldn’t claim to handle everything alone, she was capable of managing simple emergency surgical procedures.
With the construction of the base in full swing, trauma patients are sent here one after another. Traditional Chinese medicine alone cannot cure them. The best way is to combine traditional Chinese and Western medicine to treat the injured as much as possible
Jiang Ning looked at the medical inventory yesterday. There weren’t many emergency surgical tools or medicines, but they could last for about a year and a half.
The master and apprentice divided their work clearly. Ma Guangnian was in charge of Traditional Chinese medicine, and Jiang Ning was the head of general surgery.
In addition to seeing patients regularly, their main focus was on integrating Traditional Chinese medicine and Western medicine in emergency treatment.
But Jiang Ning didn’t expect the patient to come so quickly. It was only a little after ten in the morning when an injured worker was urgently sent in.
There was a cut on his leg, and there was a lot of blood flowing.
Already in poor health, the worker’s face was pale by the time he arrived.
There was no blood transfusion supplies available, so they had to stop the bleeding as quickly as possible to prevent life-threatening blood loss.
The patient was pushed into the operating room, and Jiang Ning and Ma Guangnian rushed inside.
Ma Guangnian used acupuncture and pressure point techniques to reduce the bleeding.
Jiang Ning cleaned and disinfected the wound and stopped the bleeding and sutured the wound under local anesthesia.
Half an hour later, the operation was successfully completed. For the next treatment, they would try to used traditional Chinese medicine as much as possible.
Jiang Ning and Ma Guangnian smiled at each other. Their expressions were a bit solemn, but there was a hint of hope.
In the evening, Huo Yishen came to pick up Jiang Ning after work.
There was a lot to do since she had just started, and Jiang Ning didn’t finish until 8 p.m.
Worried about safety at night, Jiang Ning asked Ma Guangnian to walk with her after work, only to find out that the hospital had dormitories.
The next ferry wasn’t coming for a while, so the two simply paddled back in a rubber boat.
It was past nine o’clock when they came back, and Doudou and Coke were still awake.
Being left at home alone, Coke’s unhappiness was written all over his face, and Jiang Ning spent quite a while comforting him.
Everything is difficult at the beginning. There are not enough surgical supplies, and the treatment effect is not good. Jiang Ning has to spend a lot of time discussing plans with Ma Guangnian, such as expanding the range of Chinese medicines and improving their quality.
She requested a dorm room at the hospital, making it easier to rest and eat during lunch breaks.
When Huo Yishen wasn’t busy, he would come over, either to have lunch with her or to wait for her after work.
Although busy, it was quite fulfilling.
After a month of effort, conditions remained tough, but things gradually began to run smoothly. With the cooperation of Jiang Ning and Ma Guangnian several times, the combination of Chinese and Western medicine became more and more proficient.
Just as they breathed a sigh of relief, a new task came – find a way to treat the survivors in Area F.
What kind of people live in Area F?
It was a combination of people with mental illnesses and physical mutations.
The people there, whether due to natural disasters or circumstances, were not exactly saints.
Without hesitation, Jiang Ning refused the task, but to her surprise, Ma Guangnian was determined to take it on.
“Teacher Ma, the people who go there are mad from their illnesses every day, and many have already injured the management staff.”
“You are the base’s hope right now. If something happens to you, it wouldn’t be worth it.”
Ma Guangnian had heard about it. “They’ve already improved management over there. Everyone is now forcibly isolated in separate living spaces.”
“If it’s prion disease, we indeed can’t do much, but if it’s another illness, maybe we can learn something from it.”
Due to the shortage of supplies, survivors had been forced to eat diseased, mutated sea creatures, leading to long-term physical mutations. But some of these mutations weren’t untreatable acute conditions.
Even yellow croaker, which had been mutated for years, had eventually become edible. Perhaps a breakthrough could be found in treating them as well.
Since Ma Guangnian was insistent, Jiang Ning had no choice but to agree.
He’s her life teacher, after all.
For Ma Guangnian’s safety, Jiang Ning decided to accompany him.
She took some time to go back to the submarine and took out two sets of protective clothing. “Something we collect before; better safe than sorry.”
Along with a few medical staff, they boarded the ferry and headed to Area F.
There were soldiers on duty in Area F, which currently housed more than 300 people and was also divided into four areas.
These people all had severe mental illnesses. Some were irritable and aggressive, others had a sinister look in their eyes, and some were infected with viruses that caused them to grow lumps or other abnormalities…
In short, they had lost their ability to work, and they were afflicted with all sorts of strange illnesses.
For fear of them attacking others, fences were added to the activity area.
Ma Guangnian wasn’t a psychiatrist. Today, he had come to treat survivors who had developed physical mutations due to viral infections.
The infirmary was separated by two layers of fences to prevent patients from attacking medical staff.
Upon learning that Ma Guangnian and others had arrived, the administrator selected more than a dozen typical patients and asked the soldiers on duty to bring them over one by one.
Their symptoms varied: swollen and deformed joints, lumps all over their bodies, various rashes, organ damage, and so on.
Illness can crush people’s emotions. Many people burst into tears. “Doctor, can my disease be cured? I didn’t want to eat the fish from the sea, but I had no choice. I am so hungry…”
“Please, help me. I’ve been separated from my child. I have to find her. I can’t die…”
Everyone has a reason to live. When they are emotionally broken, they either burst into tears or suddenly throw themselves at the fence and reach out to grab the doctor. “I didn’t eat fish, I didn’t eat fish!”
Jiang Ning lowered her head to sort out the medical records, and exchanged a few words with Ma Guangnian from time to time.
To be honest, without proper instruments to test which parts of the body the virus had affected, everything was just a matter of trial and error. There was also a lack of doctors and medicines, which made it difficult to move forward
“Jiang Ning?”
A sudden voice interrupted her.

Please bear with me if I didn’t update right away 😅. I was either buried in work 💼… or buried in rereading the book 📖. (P.S. Most of the time I’m rereading it 🤭—so you know just how good the story is! 🌟)
