Dense Fog
Dense Fog Chapter 8

Editor and Proofreader: Rinrin

Ren Feiyu didn’t let Lin Wu call Li Junchi and Xia Yang, saying he was fine and would talk to them later when they returned to the dorm. Otherwise, one was busy working, and the other was “killing people,” and he didn’t want to ruin their weekend.

Lin Wu knew that Ren Feiyu hated to trouble others, especially those he was close with. He was the kind of person who could give a hundred percent to others but cared deeply about even a tiny fraction in return.

Seeing that Ren Feiyu’s eyes were still red from the pool water but otherwise fine, Lin Wu decided to listen to him.

For the next hour or so, Lin Wu stayed in the observation room to keep Ren Feiyu company and pass the time. To his surprise, Wang Ye also stuck around.

So, the two groups of students occupied their respective sides of the bed like the Yangtze and Yellow Rivers, each in their own world.

In the long, dull hours, the best way to pass the time was, of course, with their phones.

Lin Wu and Ren Feiyu teamed up to play games together. At first, they were cautious and kept their voices down, but as they got more into it, they occasionally let out some yells. Overall, they kept it within reasonable limits and didn’t really make loud noise that would disturb others.

The next bed remained quite silent throughout, so quiet that Lin Wu occasionally forgot there were two other people in the room.

After another game ended and during the break, Lin Wu felt a bit thirsty and stood up to get some water from the dispenser.

As he brushed past the bed next door, he curiously stole a glance, wanting to know what those two were so quietly occupied with.

Just then, Jiang Tan put his phone down and turned to look out the window to relieve his eye fatigue.

Lin Wu’s gaze landed on Jiang Tan’s phone screen.

‘…This guy was actually playing a jigsaw puzzle on his phone!’

It was a snowy mountain landscape, already three-quarters completed, but the remaining pieces were scattered messily.

Just glancing at it made Lin Wu’s eyes hurt, but the side profile of Jiang Tan, gazing out the window, was full of calm contentment.

Dazedly returning with water, Lin Wu remembered to check on Wang Ye.

The guy had his back to him, completely focused on his game, his expression showing he had shut out everything else.

Lin Wu slowed down his pace, glancing at Wang Ye’s phone screen.

A bunch of little animals were bustling between several dining tables, coming in to sit, eat, and leave, only to be replaced by new little animals. Each table was covered with adorable checkered tablecloths, and the animal diners included kittens, puppies, little foxes, and little wolves…

Lin Wu felt like this game’s graphics seemed familiar. When he sat back down beside Ren Feiyu, he finally remembered that it was the WeChat mini-program game, Animal Restaurant, that their class president, Deng Chacha, had been enthusiastically promoting in their group chat recently.

During the following time, Lin Wu concentrated on playing games with Ren Feiyu, trying hard to forget the bizarre world of “crazy jigsaw puzzles” and “adorable pet management” behind him.

Finally, the school doctor came over and informed them that the observation time was up, and they could leave.

Finally freed, both groups of students stood up and exited in order. Jiang Tan and Wang Ye were closer to the door and walked ahead, while Lin Wu and Ren Feiyu followed behind.

However, just as they reached the door, Wang Ye suddenly stopped without any warning and turned around.

Lin Wu was startled and quickly halted, almost bumping into him.

The two locked eyes.

It was the same as that foggy day, but they were much closer now.

Close enough that Lin Wu felt as though he were being stared at by a fierce beast, his whole body tensed.

Then he heard Wang Ye ask, “Were you the one on the wall that day?”

…What was bound to come would eventually come, and Lin Wu even felt a sense of relief as if a sword that had been hanging over his head finally fell.

He could just admit it; what else could he do? It wasn’t a big deal, and besides, this was the school hospital; he didn’t believe Wang Ye would dare to act recklessly.

“Hmm?” The thought was brave, but his body was more honest. Lin Wu entered his high point of performance in his nineteen-and-a-half years of life, showing a textbook example of confusion, “What did you say?”

Wang Ye seriously examined him for the first time and, the more he looked, the more he felt like, “That day in the fog, was it you?”

Lin Wu blinked in confusion, pushing his innocent bewilderment deep into his soul: “Me?”

Wang Ye frowned. If he was so obvious and still hadn’t reacted, he must have recognized the wrong person.

“It’s fine.” It wasn’t really a big deal, so Wang Ye decisively gave up, turned around, and prepared to leave with Jiang Tan. But when he looked up, he realized that the crowd had already walked two miles away.

With Wang Ye rushing forward and Lin Wu deliberately slowing down, the two groups of students disappeared from each other’s sight as soon as they left the hospital.

At two in the afternoon, the sun was at its most ferocious.

The intense sunlight made it hard to open one’s eyes, and the little bit of coolness Lin Wu had from the air-conditioned hospital was immediately swept away by the scorching heat outside.

Along with that, he suddenly felt wide awake.

Damn, he had been so cowardly facing Wang Ye, it was like he was possessed by Ren Feiyu! This was not only unscientific but also embarrassing!

He sneaked a glance at Ren Feiyu.

The classmate walking beside him was shielding his eyes from the sun with his hand and mumbling about how there weren’t enough trees for shade at school. He began reminiscing about the pristine forests of the Greater Khingan Range[1]mountain range in northeastern china he had visited before.

Fortunately, his cowardice hadn’t been noticed… but still, it felt humiliating to him!

“Feiyu” Lin Wu decided to consult his “senior.”

“Hmm?” Ren Feiyu turned his head.

Lin Wu casually pretended to chat: “How do you usually adjust yourself after feeling cowardly?”

Ren Feiyu looked confused: “Adjust what?”

“The psychological gap” Lin Wu said, “Don’t you feel particularly miserable, regretful, and want to turn back time and do it again without being cowardly?”

Ren Feiyu replied, “Not really.”

Lin Wu: “…”

Suddenly, Ren Feiyu stopped, standing still as if he had just realized something. He looked at his buddy with an injured expression: “Lin Wu, do you dislike me?”

Lin Wu was taken aback and quickly denied it three times: “No way, how could I…”

Ren Feiyu shook his head vigorously, already in a “I’m not listening, I don’t want to hear it” state of sadness: “I knew one day you guys would look down on me and think I was too cowardly. My parents said the same thing, that I was far behind the other kids…”

Lin Wu: “Don’t listen to them! Uh… I mean, what your parents said can’t be called ‘looking down on you’; that’s… right, a loving motivation!”

Ren Feiyu: “No, they just don’t like me…”

Lin Wu: “We like you! You’re the treasure of our dorm, an SSR[2]super rare character; others can’t even pull you if they tried. They’d have to fight us for you!”

Ren Feiyu: “…Really?”

Lin Wu: “Absolutely true.”

Under the scorching sun and amidst the blooming summer flowers, Lin Wu felt drained.

Why did he have to open this Pandora’s box of a topic… it was all Wang Ye’s fault!

In the evening, there was finally a hint of coolness in the stifling air.

Li Junchi and Xia Yang returned from outside, the trio back together. Ren Feiyu, who had held in his grievances all day, could finally let it all out.

“Seriously, I’m not lying to you guys. He suddenly turned around and hugged me like a water ghost!” Ren Feiyu sat on his bed, hugging himself tightly to reenact the “crime scene.” “I was completely shocked; he was super strong and terrifying!”

“Just tell it normally; don’t exaggerate it artistically” Xia Yang said, sitting cross-legged on his bed, resting his chin in his hand, looking like he was listening to a ghost story.

“I’m really not exaggerating” Ren Feiyu said. “You can ask Jiang Tan!”

Xia Yang looked puzzled: “Who?”

“The one from the Mechanical Engineering department” Lin Wu said, turning to help explain from the window. “He was the one who pulled Feiyu and that guy out of the water together.”

Li Junchi sat in front of his desk under his bed, soaking his feet while looking thoughtful. “From what Feiyu is saying, it does sound pretty out there but what happened to me today is even weirder, so I believe him.”

Xia Yang was genuinely curious now, leaning over the edge of his bed and asking, “What happened to you?”

Li Junchi sighed deeply, clearly recalling something he wished he could forget.

“Today, I was helping that grad student who was proposing, and everything was going smoothly. Then when the girl was in place and he knelt down, those two lunatics actually showed up…”

Lin Wu: “Those two persistent underclassmen?”

Li Junchi: “What persistent? They’re just two crazy people, and the first thing they said was ‘I oppose this!’ Come on, at least take a good look at the scene. Is there anything about this process that gives you the right to oppose it? They were ringing gongs and beating drums for a traditional wedding, and even the betrothal gifts were there. The guy kneeling down didn’t even offer a diamond ring but a large golden bracelet for good luck!”

Lin Wu and Ren Feiyu: “…”

Xia Yang: “Now I’m not concerned about those two anymore; I just want to hear about that golden bracelet part, hurry up.”

“Stop interrupting.” Li Junchi continued with the main story. “I saw that I had to step in; after all, they hired us for this. So I rushed over from a distance and only then realized that, true to form for a grad student, he was calm and cautious. At least three or four people came with me, all of whom he had brought along just in case.”

Ren Feiyu: “With so many people, you shouldn’t lose, right?”

“The problem is right there!” Even now, thinking back, Li Junchi found it hard to believe. “Those two had average height and build; they were just… average. I’m the thinnest one here, while the others are all muscular, yet those two managed to take down every one of us and easily broke through our circle.”

Lin Wu: “Did they have training?”

“I don’t know, but they were incredibly strong. Several times I charged at them, only to be thrown aside. With my eyes closed, I felt like I was trying to catch two bears” Li Junchi said, leaning back in his chair with difficulty, “Otherwise, in this heat, do you think I’d be soaking my feet to heal? Ugh, my whole body still hurts.”

“Don’t stop, brother” Xia Yang said, getting into it, “What happened next?”

Li Junchi: “Later, both sides’ family and friends got furious and rushed in to subdue the troublemakers.”

Xia Yang nodded: “That’s why it’s said that you must let the enemy sink into the ocean of people’s war.”

After expressing his feelings, he realized that Lin Wu by the window had turned his head back, continuing to gaze at the moon.

Xia Yang also leaned over to look outside.

Tonight’s night sky was very clear, and every star was particularly bright; the moon looked especially beautiful, shining as if washed clean by a summer rain.

But even if it looked good, there was no need to lean on the windowsill and stare at it all night.

Even though they had been chatting animatedly just a moment ago, Lin Wu had only turned back frequently to participate in the discussion without moving from his spot.

Now that the conversation was over, the dormitory had returned to a slight quiet.

Xia Yang then noticed that when Lin Wu looked up at the moon, he seemed to be… humming a song?

He quietly crawled to the end of his bed near the window and listened carefully—

“Kabinski[3]polish surname, Tchaikovsky[4]Russian composer, truck driver, taxi driver, tractor driver Ivanov, Bapnov, Babunov[5]surnames of slavic origin, he’s a coward, Loli[6]albanian surname, Rosov[7]Russian or Bulgarian surname

Xia Yang: “…”

If he hadn’t heard that song before, who could understand those tongue-twisting lyrics!
