But this time, her expression darkened, and she said unhappily, “Then don’t go back. Why make such a fuss?”
Madam Huang, who had just wiped her mouth and came over, was startled by the noise. Then she asked happily, “Madam, are you saying that Young Master Dongdong shouldn’t go back?”
Madam Xiao was even angrier when she saw Huang’s greasy mouth. The chicken cutlet she hadn’t eaten enough of was gone! She felt heartbroken immediately. Then she thought that her grandson couldn’t eat what he wanted, so it was no wonder he cried so much. She became more serious: “Yes, if he doesn’t go back, what’s the point of going back? Isn’t this his home?!”
Madam Huang didn’t notice anything wrong at all; instead, she was delighted. “Okay, I’ll tell the Fourth Miss right away!”
She left happily.
Her departing figure looked like she was holding a treasure.
Madam Xiao, feeling angry, fell silent and felt a bit sad.
It’s ridiculous to say that if it were the Xiao family ten years ago, who would dare to be so bold? Not to mention the Jiang family, even the Tian family wouldn’t dare to interfere with them, especially not taking children already part of the Xiao family.
However…
Madam Xiao sighed and said, “Never mind. Once he’s eaten enough, he’ll leave naturally.”
Yan Qiushu didn’t know exactly what happened to the Xiao family.
But that night, Dongdong came to her yard happily, his eyes red, and she understood what it meant.
The child hadn’t been taken away.
It’s strange to say, but in the original owner’s memory, the Jiang family was actually much less important than the Xiao family. Even though the Xiao family was now in decline, it still made a difference.
But she didn’t expect the Jiang family to be so bold now.
She quite liked this silly but cute little foodie. He even grabbed a handful of chicken cutlet before leaving; it was so funny. So when she saw him coming, Yan Qiushu immediately waved, “Are you hungry?”
Dongdong looked eager: “No! I want to eat chicken cutlet!”
Chicken cutlets have more meat, and he prefers meat.
Yan Qiushu smiled and said, “We can’t eat too much at once. Can we have something light tonight?”
Dongdong looked reluctant, but he knew this was beyond his control, so he could only nod sadly: “Okay, I finally begged my mother to let me come to your place for dinner, sigh…”
Seeing the little boy, Yan Qiushu didn’t know whether to laugh or cry: “Don’t worry, even if it’s light, it’ll be delicious!”
Dongdong was happy again: “Can I help?”
“Sure.” Yan Qiushu handed him an egg: “Can you crack eggs?”
Dongdong shook his head, and Yan Qiushu taught him to tap the rim of the bowl first, then break the two halves.
“Ah!” Dongdong exclaimed: “The egg is broken!”
The first time often involves some failures. Yan Qiushu instinctively reached out to catch the broken eggshell to prevent it from falling into the bowl. However, both of them ended up with egg liquid on their hands. She shouted, “Shui Yu, bring me a towel!”
However, Shui Lu was blanching carrots and couldn’t help, so he said, “Shui Lu! Come over here and get a towel!”
No response at all.
Yan Qiushu frowned and had to find a towel with her dirty hands, wash them clean, and then wipe Dongdong’s hands.
The failure didn’t discourage Dongdong. He wiped his hands and was still very interested: “Sister Shu, I still want to play!”
“Okay~” Yan Qiushu continued to ask him to beat the eggs. A lot of eggs were needed today.
They were making egg burritos, which required eggs, shredded carrots, river shrimps, chopped green onion, and salt. To make it more filling, Yan Qiushu added some flour to the beaten egg mixture, making it into a paste. She spread it in the heated, oiled large iron pan and flattened it with a spatula.
It wasn’t as easy as using a modern frying pan, but she was skilled at cooking. With a wave of her hand, the shiny black iron pot was covered with a light yellow liquid. Due to the heat, the liquid solidified quickly, forming red and green round cakes on the surface.
The combination of the darker yellow underneath created three bright colors: red, green, and yellow. Dongdong, initially just curious, opened his mouth wide and exclaimed, “Wow! It looks so delicious!”
Most children love colorful food. Yan Qiushu smiled and said, “It must be delicious. Since you helped make it, you can eat it first.”
Dongdong nodded happily, “Okay! I’ll share some with my mother, grandmother, and sister Wan’er!”
“Alright, can you help deliver it later?”
“Sure!” Dongdong said, nodding enthusiastically.
Staying with the Xiao family, Yan Qiushu didn’t have to worry about food shortages. There were more eggs than flour, and with the big iron pot, she made enough for everyone, including herself. Dongdong and Wan’er shared one cake, while the others kept one for each of them.
When the last pancake was ready, Yan Qiushu wanted to ask, “Do you want to eat it?” But Dongdong shook his head, looking anxious, “I need to give it to my mother first; otherwise, they’ll miss dinner!”
“That’s true, Dongdong is really thoughtful.” Yan Qiushu noticed it was getting late, so she quickly cut the cakes into pieces and packed them into boxes.
“Sister Ah Shu, I’m leaving first,” Dongdong said as he hurried away with some maids carrying the food boxes.
After he left, Yan Qiushu heard him yell, “Uncle! Aunt! Dongdong is here to bring you some food!”
Shui Yu laughed, saying, “The young lady asked Young Master Dongdong to help her today, and he was very excited. Soon everyone in the mansion will know what he did.”
“That’s good. It’s too quiet in the house.” Yan Qiushu smiled and nodded.
The Xiao Mansion was good in many ways, but it was too boring. This silence was due to many masters of the mansion having died.
Dwelling on the past was not helpful for their future. It might be why they missed issues in time, leading to Xiao Huaiting being out of food and supplies when the battle was most critical, forcing him to guard the city gate with a hungry, powerless group.
Yan Qiushu usually wasn’t sentimental, but at this moment, she felt a bit uneasy.
She took a bite of the egg burrito she made for herself. The burrito was soft, salty, and fragrant. The blanched carrots were slightly crunchy, and after chewing, she tasted the sweetness of the carrots. The best part was the small pieces of river shrimp, which were soft, tender, and elastic.
Though light, the omelet was delicious. Tasty!
However, Yan Qiushu felt strange about the recent events involving Dongdong and Nanny Jiang. The deliciousness of the eggs depended on what the Xiao family provided. Without the Xiao family, how could she enjoy eggs freely, let alone obtain river shrimps in this inland area?
Yan Qiushu felt listless. She had no special skills except cooking. What could she do in this era?
While she pondered, Shui Yu suddenly exclaimed, “Girl! The Sixth Young Master is here!”
Yan Qiushu looked up and saw Xiao Huaiting, wearing familiar armor, walking toward her. He moved quickly, and in an instant, he was right in front of her.
Shui Lu shyly handed him a handkerchief, saying, “Sixth Young Master, please wipe your sweat.”
Yan Qiushu wondered where the sweat came from; she hadn’t seen anyone outside.
