Pedro’s Book of Magic Chapter 8

Chapter 8

“What Are You Best at?”

“I feel like I came here today just to bring you two for the interview.” Yawning, 485325 steadily parked the car, and Juan and 485321 jumped down from the back seat in turn. “Do we have to pay?” Juan looked at him.

“No need! I just felt compelled to say something. It’s just that I know about this rare opportunity but feel utterly powerless, which is a bit frustrating,” 485325 pouted.

He slept steadily in the library until seven o’clock, and when he woke up, he saw 485345 seriously reading a book. The only thought in his mind was: It’s over; I’m definitely not going to pass.

However, he still came over. First, they had agreed to go for the exam together yesterday, and second, there was a bit of wishful thinking—what if, just what if, he managed to pass?

Wasn’t it said that people who accompany others for exams tend to have good luck?

So even without any preparation, he drove the two over.

“Opportunities are reserved for those who are prepared, right?” Just when he finally managed to muster some spirit, 485321 said this.

“Okay! I know I won’t pass, but I’m just coming to see the world,” 485325 replied irritably.

While bickering, the three of them walked toward the entrance of Eden.

There was already quite a crowd gathered there.

However, the atmosphere there was clearly very serious; everyone was standing in an orderly line, and no one was speaking.

Gesturing for them to join the queue on the left, 485321 stood in the right queue himself, and then the three of them stopped talking.

The number of applicants for the tutoring position was obviously greater than that for the researcher position. Over the next ten minutes, the line behind them grew longer, and as eight o’clock arrived, a light curtain suddenly appeared behind the last person in line, and the tall metal door in front opened. Two staff members, a man and a woman, wearing white uniforms walked out.

“Those interviewing for researcher positions, follow me,” said the male staff member with a serious expression.

“Students applying for tutoring positions, please follow me,” said the female staff member, who was much friendlier in comparison.

They each led a long line of people in different directions.

Following behind them, almost everyone couldn’t help but look around, after all, for these people, this was the place of their birth. They were born here and then left around the age of two. If they didn’t manage to get a job here afterward, they would likely never return.

Jobs here were very rare, and no one dared to claim they could pass the exams. So, if they wanted to catch a glimpse of the mysterious Eden, they could only take this opportunity.

Juan’s gaze blended into the many curious looks.

In contrast to the imposing high white walls that gave a sense of being kept at bay, the inside of Eden surprisingly appeared…

Relaxed?

The greenery was exceptional, with neatly trimmed trees and flowers everywhere. The buildings were all white, with some transparent glass houses inside, decorated with carpets and tables and chairs. Occasionally, one could see staff members in white sitting in small groups, seemingly chatting while sipping drinks. It felt extremely pleasant.

There were even people lying on the lawn, soaking up the sun!

Sunlight bathed the grass, birds circled overhead, and the faint scent of flowers wafted through the air…

Everyone felt an overwhelming desire to work here—almost everyone thought this way.

Except for Juan.

Naturally, he wanted to work here too, but not because of this relaxed atmosphere.

To him, this place felt like a prison!

There was a constant feeling of being monitored everywhere, and he felt like he was under intense scrutiny.

Of course, given his personality, he wouldn’t actually lose his temper; he just grew increasingly serious.

He stopped looking around and fixed his gaze on the egg-shaped building hidden behind the tall trees… for three seconds, then he followed the female leader into a white building.

Inside was a square white room, with rows of chairs neatly arranged. They were instructed to take their seats in order. Once everyone was seated, the female staff member smiled and said:

“There’s drinking water over there. If you’re thirsty, feel free to help yourselves. The restrooms and makeup rooms are over there; anyone in need can go there.”

“The exam will begin in five minutes. After the interview, you won’t return to this room, so please keep your personal belongings with you.”

After finishing this cheerful announcement, she walked to a door and stood there.

Sure enough, five minutes later, the exam began.

Everyone entered the room behind her one by one, in the order they had seated, and the door opened only when a candidate was entering, then closed again, making it impossible to see what was inside.

Each person spent roughly the same amount of time inside; about ten minutes after the person on the left entered, it was Juan’s turn.

“Go for it! Good luck!” 485325 quietly cheered him on from the side; he was next.

Nodding slightly at him, Juan entered that room.

Inside was a huge circular hall with large floor-to-ceiling windows letting in warm sunlight. The blue sky, white clouds, and green lawn were clearly visible outside. Against the backdrop of the windows, five people in white coats sat at the front.

The middle person was a man with white hair, likely the oldest among them. The others were slightly younger—two women and two men. Juan made a quick judgment and sat down on the only chair opposite the five.

The exam immediately began.

“Student 485345, you are applying for the position of a tutor. What do you consider your greatest advantage for this job?” The first question came from the female staff member on the far right. She had long hair and a round face, looking quite young.

“I’m physically strong.” Without any expression, Juan answered without hesitation.

Clearly, he was probably the first person to respond this way today, as the five people opposite him were momentarily taken aback.

Well, the position was called “tutor,” and most of the other applicants answered based on their strongest subjects. Claiming that his greatest advantage was being physically strong was indeed something only Juan would say.

“So, what are you best at?” This time, it was the male staff member on the far left asking the question.

Juan thought for a moment, then hesitated before saying, “Fighting?”

Once again, the interviewers received an unexpected answer, and they couldn’t help but lean toward each other for a quiet discussion.

“Well, I guess he knows that given his grades and alma mater, he has no advantage, so that’s why he answered like this,” said the male staff member who had questioned him earlier to his colleagues.

“True, but what he said did give me an idea. To deal with *that person*, being physically strong might really be an advantage…”

“Being good at fighting could help too—he might last a few more days?”

“Maybe our hiring criteria were wrong from the start…”

“Ask him more questions! Keep going!”

In the end, the elderly man in the middle made the final decision.

The interview continued—

“I saw that you traded a Level-4 crystal at the trading center yesterday, and you also have a record of leaving the city. Did you hunt it yourself?”

“Yes.”

“Was it difficult to fight?”

“It was manageable.”

“If we dropped you in the forest alone, could you make it back?”

“No problem.”

He was asked several strange questions.

They felt strange because, on their way here, 485321 had crammed in some last-minute interview tips, summarizing questions that might be asked for the tutoring position.

Questions about strengths and advantages were expected, but these other ones were completely off-script.

Could it be that his earlier answers had disqualified him, and now they were just asking random questions to kill time?

485321 had mentioned this: to prevent candidates from guessing the outcome based on the length of the interview, the interviewers tried to keep everyone’s time about the same. So for those they rejected early on, they would still ask a few random questions to stretch the interview to the allotted time.

Realizing that things weren’t looking good, Juan felt he needed to do something to salvage the situation.

“I’ve taken care of two children before.” Although they were twins abandoned by a human woman who claimed to be a princess, 485321 said that having childcare experience was a bonus.

“I enjoy reading poetry, painting, and playing musical instruments.” 485321 had also mentioned that artistic talents could be a plus for tutor candidates.

At that moment, Juan was a bit grateful that he had spent the previous night reading poetry out of interest. He still remembered it vividly—he could recite an entire collection on the spot if needed!

Unfortunately, the interviewers didn’t ask him to recite anything. Instead, the elderly man in the middle finally posed another question:

“Can you cook?”

“Yes.” Juan answered gloomily, his gaze drifting to the clock above the old man’s head. It showed that exactly ten minutes had passed since he entered—just like the other candidates.

So, they really were just filling time? Was he going to be rejected?

If that’s the case, how else could he get in?

While Juan sat there, expressionless, lost in thought, the old man suddenly nodded at him.

“You’re hired.”

Roll: !!!

“I’ve taken care of two children before.” Although they were twins abandoned by a self-proclaimed princess…

Juan ended up caring for them for a year, with no sign of the princess returning. Finally, he took the kids and went to look for their mother, leaving behind a legend in the human world about a man who kidnapped a princess.

A year later, the princess became queen, and her twins became princesses!
