Chapter 7 : What’s Wrong with the Country People?
After hearing what Matchmaker Yao said, Jiang Yu trotted over.
Matchmaker Yao said gently, “This is Wenxuan’s mother, you can just call her Aunt Zhong.”
“Aunt Zhong, I’m Jiang Yu.”
Zhong Yanmei did not hide her scrutiny and seemed satisfied with Jiang Yu’s appearance.
She was tall, elegant, and exuded confidence without any sign of shyness.
“Where are you from? What do your parents do?”
Jiang Yu answered openly, “I’m from Nanghe Village, and my parents are farmers in the countryside.”
As soon as she said this, Zhong Yanmei’s expression changed immediately, and her disgust and contempt for country people became evident.
“Auntie, why would you introduce a country girl to my son? Isn’t that an insult to me? My Wenxuan is a schoolteacher. With his qualifications, how could he end up dating a country girl?”
She also complained to Matchmaker Yao, her blunt and rude words making Yao’s face change drastically.
“Yanmei, how can you talk like that? What’s wrong with country people? I’ve been a matchmaker for so many years, and there are many people from the city marrying country girls, and from the country marrying city girls, young or old, and I’ve never seen them living a bad life.”
Zhong Yanmei snorted, “I’ll tell you the truth, my Wenxuan already has a girlfriend, she’s the only daughter of the school principal! I originally thought that since you were the one to introduce her to me, she must be good. If I had known she was from the country, I wouldn’t have bothered to meet her.”
The disgust on her face was almost written on it.
Zhong Yanmei waved her hand, turned and went into the house, closing the door with a bang.
Matchmaker Yao’s face turned black and she spat at the door.
“Uneducated thing!”
Jiang Yu was naturally upset and angry, but she had prepared herself mentally before coming.
If marrying a city person is so easy, everyone can do the same. Who would still get married in the countryside?
“Grandma Yao, I’m so sorry, if it weren’t for me…”
Matchmaker Yao clicked her tongue twice, “Oh my girl, this is just the beginning! I knew Zhong Yanmei was a snob, but I didn’t expect she didn’t even have basic manners. This time it’s my fault.”
There are many people who are not likable during blind dates, but it is rare to find someone who speaks as rudely as Zhong Yanmei.
“How can the only daughter of a school principal fall in love with a dung collector’s son like you? I’m afraid she is marrying into the family.”
She scoffed, “Let’s go!”
On the way back, Matchmaker Yao told her that she would no longer pay attention to her and asked her not to worry.
Jiang Yu smiled and thanked her “Grandma Yao, don’t worry, I’ll go see my aunt first.”
“Okay, go ahead.”
The two said goodbye at the intersection, and Jiang Yu turned around and went to the street office to find Yao Xiangling.
Yao Xiangling was naturally disappointed to learn that Jiang Yu and she did not get together.
“Why don’t you stay at my house for a while and come back when you find someone suitable?”
Jiang Yu thought it was a good suggestion but didn’t agree immediately.
“Aunt, let me tell my mother when I get home.”
“Okay, let’s go back.”
Jiang Yu waited for Jiang Ting at the agreed place, thinking that so much time had passed and she should have finished by now.
Not long after, she saw Jiang Ting’s figure approaching, unable to hide the joy on her face. It seemed she had good news.
“Did it work?”
Jiang Ting raised her chin, looking proud. “Of course it succeeded. Comrade Fu Xiangyang is very satisfied with me. You should just give up now.”
Jiang Yu opened her mouth but had nothing more to say; she didn’t want to engage further.
Jiang Ting was simply insufferable.
After hearing the good news brought back by Jiang Ting, Jiang Yonghua and Wang Meili were overjoyed.
For the first time, Wang Meili felt that her daughter Jiang Ting was quite capable. In the blink of an eye, she was about to become a city girl.
“Did he say when he would come to propose? What about the bride price? Has he mentioned it?”
Jiang Ting replied proudly, “He said he would come to propose in a couple of days, and the bride price is fifty. The closer to the wedding, the better.”
“What? Only fifty? That’s way too little!” Wang Meili began to nitpick again.
One had to admit that city folks weren’t all that generous.
Jiang Ting was unhappy “Fifty isn’t that little! My cousin’s bride price was only twenty!”
Wang Meili scoffed, “But your cousin didn’t marry a city person!”
Jiang Ting retorted coolly, “Well, city people don’t always need a bride price when they marry.”
Wang Meili pretended to hit her, “You haven’t even gotten married yet, and you’re already acting like this!”
In the end, Jiang Yonghua intervened, saying, “Fifty is fifty, it’s not a small amount! In Nanghe Village, no one has had a higher bride price than your daughter!”
From now on, this daughter would be a city person, they needed to be polite.
With that, Wang Meili felt somewhat satisfied.
She happily looked through the calendar, muttering, “Tomorrow is the fourth day of the first lunar month, which is a good day for engagement, so tomorrow is a good day to come and propose. The fifth day is the hottest day of the year, which is a bad day, otherwise we can set up a bar on the sixth day.”
The wedding banquet on the sixth day of the New Year she mentioned refers to the one in Nanhe Village.
As for the time of entry, we will discuss it separately.
Jiang Ting was unwilling to do so and said, “We won’t have to have a banquet in the village. They have to pay for the gifts anyway, whether we have wine or not. We can just set up two tables in his courtyard on the sixth day of the New Year and just go through the motions.”
Wang Meili almost slapped him, “Even if I were to marry a city guy, I wouldn’t be so eager as you! The village wedding will be held on the sixth day of the New Year. We can discuss when the Fu family will hold the wedding. It’s settled now!”
Wang Meili almost slapped her. “Even if you’re marrying a city person, you shouldn’t be so eager! We can hold it in the village on the sixth, and when the Fu family is ready, we’ll discuss that separately. It’s settled!”
Having finally married her daughter off to the city, she wanted to show it off properly. How could she let go of such a rare opportunity?
Jiang Yu slipped away again to find Wang Yunshan to talk.
“Did Jiang Ting succeed in her match?”
“Yes.”
Wang Yunshan sighed. “I never thought that among us, Jiang Ting would be the first to get married. What kind of man is she with that she’s so impatient?”
Jiang Yu didn’t care much. “He’s coming to propose tomorrow, we’ll see then.”
Wang Yunshan looked at her. “And you? Have your parents made any plans for your marriage?”
Jiang Yu lay on a pile of hay, it was still not completely dark, and a faint red glow was visible in the sky.
“I don’t know, probably not. Jiang Ting just got married, so it doesn’t make sense for them to marry off two daughters in one year.”
Wang Yunshan scoffed coldly, “What do you mean it doesn’t make sense? My parents are already looking for a man for me.”
She wasn’t the eldest, she had an older sister named Wang Laidi.
Wang Laidi got married earlier this year to a man twenty years older than her.
That man, apart from his age, had two flaws: he was extremely short, less than five feet tall and quite unattractive.
He was so unattractive that Wang Yunshan would never forget what she saw after just one glance.
But her parents didn’t care after all, daughters are like water poured out, and marrying anyone doesn’t matter as long as there’s a bride price.
“Jiang Yu, I keep thinking about where our homes truly are as women.” Wang Yunshan looked lost.
Her family home wasn’t a home, and her in-laws’ home wasn’t either.
Wang Yunshan began to doubt since she was born. From her name to her as a person, is there any meaning in her survival?
And Jiang Yu didn’t have an answer to that.
