Chapter 14 : He is too short

Seeing Jiang Yu’s face, Sun Zailiang was stunned and exclaimed “Xiangyang, your wife is so damn pretty!”

Jiang Yu smiled. “I’m his sister-in-law, just here for the wedding feast today.”

Once her identity was revealed, many people’s interest quickly faded.

After all, Jiang Ting’s sister was just a country girl as well.

Fu Xiangyang stood frozen, unable to tear his gaze away from Jiang Yu’s face.

He felt deceived, why was Jiang Ting the one to be introduced when Jiang Yu was clearly the older sister?

If Jiang Ting didn’t exist, wouldn’t Jiang Yu be the one marrying him today?

Fu Xiangyang clenched his teeth, feeling a sense of discontent.

Behind him, He Tingyue patted his shoulder, speaking in a deep voice, “Aren’t you going to go get your wife?”

His low tone carried an unspoken authority, compelling Fu Xiangyang to comply.

There was no point in regretting, the situation had already progressed too far.

“Liangzi, can you take my sister-in-law to the state-run restaurant?”

Sun Zailiang was thrilled and agreed without hesitation.

He had no intention of pursuing Jiang Yu, but everyone loves beauty, and having such a lovely woman ride on his bicycle would definitely boost his image.

However, Jiang Yu declined, saying, “No need, it’s not far. I can walk there myself.”

Her refusal, however, only piqued Sun Zailiang’s interest further.

Jiang Ting’s reputation had spread through the courtyard, and the stories about her using her body to secure a relationship with a city boy weren’t flattering.

This brought a bit of contempt toward Jiang Yu as well.

But it was clear they were two very different people.

Jiang Yu declined their invitation and walked toward the state-run restaurant on her own.

Fu Xiangyang passed by her with Jiang Ting on his bicycle, creating a gust of wind.

Jiang Ting waved happily at Jiang Yu.

“Jiang Yu, we’re leaving now!”

Jiang Yu couldn’t be bothered to respond.

Once at the restaurant, Jiang Yu found herself surrounded by a group of older women.

To her surprise, Matchmaker Yao was there too and greeted her warmly.

With Matchmaker Yao’s connections, she was quite invested in Jiang Yu’s marriage and was still looking for prospects for her.

She pulled Jiang Yu aside, saying, “Just in time, did you see that fair-skinned young man over there? That’s Sun Zailiang. He’s quite a handsome fellow. Take this opportunity to talk to him.”

Jiang Yu smiled but felt awkward, unsure how to decline the matchmaker’s suggestion.

Given Yao’s enthusiasm, it felt wrong to speak ill of Sun Zailiang.

Matchmaker Yao, not taking no for an answer, thought this was a rare opportunity that shouldn’t be missed.

She dragged Jiang Yu forward, smiling, “Liangzi!”

“Yao Granny, what’s up?” Sun Zailiang responded.

With a big grin, Matchmaker Yao said, “This is Jiang Yu, the bride’s sister. You two should get to know each other.”

Sun Zailiang raised his eyebrows, then laughed.

“Alright, no worries! I’ll treat her well.”

He felt a twinge of disdain, he had just acted so high and mighty, yet couldn’t resist approaching her.

But unfortunately, she was Jiang Ting’s sister, now a relative of the Fu family, so he had to be cautious.

He didn’t want to get involved too deeply and then find it hard to back out.

“Jiang Yu, you can sit here,” he offered, moving aside.

Jiang Yu shook her head with a smile, “I’ll sit over there. Grandma Yao was just too enthusiastic and insisted I come over.”

Sun Zailiang’s eyes flashed with amusement, she was trying to keep her distance.

“No worries, just think of it as making a new friend, it’s no loss,” he said.

Jiang Yu exchanged a few polite words with him before returning to her original spot.

Nearby, a friend teased, “Liangzi, you’re quite lucky!”

Sun Zailiang shot them a glare. “Don’t say nonsense.”

He then turned to He Tingyue, who stood still like a mountain, and chatted, “I thought she and her sister were different, but it seems she’s just trying to show off. She’s pretty, but my mom wouldn’t let me marry a country girl.”

He Tingyue remained silent, his expression unfazed as he listened.

Jiang Yu’s beautiful features flashed in his mind, unsettling him for no reason.

Before long, Sun Zailiang found the conversation dull and shifted topics.

When the banquet finally ended, Jiang Yu seized the chance to leave.

Matchmaker Yao hurried after her.

“Jiang Yu, why are you in such a hurry?”

Jiang Yu forced a smile, knowing she was just trying to avoid her.

She dreaded being pushed into another match with Sun Zailiang.

“I noticed you and Liangzi hardly spoke. What do you think of him?”

Jiang Yu replied awkwardly, “He’s a bit short for my taste.”

Matchmaker Yao was taken aback. “Short? Actually, he’s not that short, with your shoes on, he’s a few centimeters taller than you.”

For most people, looks are secondary, as long as it’s acceptable, that’s what matters.

Most focused on family background, and the Sun family was quite decent.

Especially since Jiang Yu was a country girl in a hurry to find a match; the Sun family was a step up.

Jiang Yu gritted her teeth, deciding it was best to refuse outright.

“Grandma Yao, I want someone over 1.8 meters tall, not too skinny, but sturdy. Sun Zailiang looks delicate, I doubt he could even lift me. Family background isn’t my main concern, character is what matters most.”

She wanted to shout that Sun Zailiang was a flirt!

Yao Xiangling replied, “…Sturdy? Oh, that’s good. I’ll keep an eye out for you!”

She mumbled something as she walked away, clearly dissatisfied.

As Jiang Yu turned to leave, she met He Tingyue’s sharp gaze, which felt unfathomable.

They had only met a few times, and he seemed indifferent, as if he couldn’t even see her.

But this time, his calm eyes held a hint of mockery.

Jiang Yu quickly realized he must have overheard her conversation with the matchmaker.

It seemed he was quite familiar with Sun Zailiang.

“Um… Comrade He,” she started.

He Tingyue paused, slightly turning his face but not looking back.

From this angle, Jiang Yu could only see his angular profile.

Feeling anxious, she twisted her fingers as she approached.

“You… don’t misunderstand me, I…”

“Misunderstand what?” His voice remained cold.

Jiang Yu felt like she had never detected any emotion from him before, he was always so composed.

“I was talking about Sun Zailiang…”

He Tingyue interrupted her, “Comrade Jiang, we’re not familiar.”

Jiang Yu’s expression froze, and before she could react, she saw him stride away.

Biting her lip, she understood his implication.

They weren’t familiar, so there was no need for an explanation.

Though he was right, it still left a heaviness in her heart.

She returned to her aunt’s house, changed back into her old clothes and shoes, and washed her things.

Even at night, her mood hadn’t improved.

How dare he look at her with those eyes!
