Chapter 35 : Recruitment Examination

Lin Changan scoffed, “Auntie, that’s right! It’s a perfectly good marriage, why spoil it? Just wait to enjoy the wedding feast.”

While everyone else seemed happy, Jiang Yu was not having it.

“Auntie, didn’t you just say that Sun Zailiang and Zhao Qing have nothing to do with each other? You also claimed that I was scheming against Sun Zailiang. You slandered me and damaged my reputation, and you still haven’t apologized.”

Sun’s mother felt like she was having the worst day ever.

By forcefully acknowledging Zhao Qing as her daughter-in-law, she felt like she was slapping herself in the face.

She had been so adamant before, looking down on Zhao Qing, now that slap was echoing loudly in her mind.

In her long life, she had never felt this humiliated, not even when her husband passed away.

Sun’s mother clenched her jaw, her teeth nearly grinding together.

“I’m sorry, I made a mistake. I misunderstood you.”

Jiang Yu stopped being aggressive, all she wanted was that one apology.

“Auntie, please be careful with your words next time. I won’t hold it against you this time. Comrade Sun Zailiang, I wish you and Comrade Zhao Qing a long and happy marriage.”

Xie Fei fei joined in, smiling, “And me too, I wish you both well!”

After thanking the comrades in the security department, the two left.

As soon as they exited the second factory, Xie Fei fei couldn’t help but burst into laughter.

“Did you see that? Sun Zailiang’s mom looked so angry! The person she least respected is now her daughter-in-law. This family is going to have some drama!”

Jiang Yu smirked, “That’s fine, let them create their own chaos. At least they won’t have time to bother us.”

Xie Fei fei chuckled, “True, I really don’t have the patience to deal with them.”

As they stepped outside, they noticed a woman speaking with the guard at the entrance.

The woman was pleading softly, “Just let me see him once, I just want to say a few words.”

“It’s not that I don’t want you to see him, it’s that Captain Lin doesn’t want to see you. If I let you in, that would be dereliction of duty and would put me in trouble! You should just go home,” the guard replied.

The woman spent a while trying to persuade the guard, but eventually wiped her tears and turned to leave.

Xie Fei fei asked, “Captain Lin? Could it be Lin Changan?”

The guard sighed, “Yes, that’s the one. She’s his stepmother.”

Xie Fei fei approached, “His stepmother? What’s she doing here to see him?”

“Captain Lin moved to a single dormitory, and she’s come to ask him to move back home. She’s been here several times, but Lin Changan hasn’t even bothered to come out and see her. He’s really heartless.”

Xie Fei fei’s eyes widened, “How can you say that!”

The guard shrugged, “I’m not wrong. His stepmother really cares for him, she’s come a lot.”

Xie Fei fei rolled her eyes, “Then why did he move out?”

“He’s too wild. I heard he beat his younger brother at home, and his dad kicked him out. They’re brothers, why be so harsh with each other?” the guard rambled on.

Xie Fei fei frowned, “Did you see what he did to his brother?”

The guard casually replied, “I couldn’t see that far.”

Xie Fei fei pressed, “If you didn’t see it, how do you know?”

“His stepmother told me!”

“And how do you know she’s telling the truth? If it were that serious, his dad would have taken him to the police by now! Plus, do you know why he hit his brother?”

The guard’s eyes widened, “You know?”

Xie Fei fei shook her head, “I don’t know, but for no reason at all, unless he’s crazy, who would hit someone? I don’t know, so I won’t speculate. Just look at the situation, if his stepmother really cared, why didn’t she bring anything with her?”

She didn’t trust hear say, she believed only what she could see.

Based on her earlier impression of Lin Changan, she thought he didn’t seem like a bad person.

The guard puffed out his cheeks, realizing he had been cornered by Xie Fei fei’s questions.

Once he was out of things to say, Xie Fei fei turned and followed Jiang Yu away.

Jiang Yu eyed her, “Why are you defending Lin Changan? You have no connection to him.”

Xie Fei fei replied confidently, “He helped us just now! If it weren’t for him, Tong Fang would definitely have favored Sun Zailiang.”

Jiang Yu stretched out her words, “Oh, is that so?”

“Of course it is!” Xie Fei fei stubbornly insisted, secretly thinking Lin Changan was a little handsome.

Wednesday was the day Jiang Yu was scheduled to take the job recruitment exam at the newspaper.

She arrived early, waiting at the door for the office to open so she could collect her admission ticket.

While waiting, she spotted the woman she had seen talking to He Tingyue in the courtyard.

The woman approached her, introducing herself, “I’m Duan Yuzhen. What’s your name?”

Duan Yuzhen? Jiang Yu was taken aback.

She vaguely recalled that Xie Fei fei mentioned the chief editor of the newspaper was Duan Yuzhen’s uncle.

“I’m Jiang Yu,” she replied calmly.

This time, it was Duan Yuzhen who looked surprised.

“You’re Jiang Yu?”

“Yes. Do you know me?”

A hint of panic crossed Duan Yuzhen’s face. “No, I don’t know you.”

She quickly moved to the other side, distancing herself from Jiang Yu and stopping further conversation.

Soon, the office opened, and someone came out to distribute admission tickets.

“Come forward when your name is called: Duan Yuzhen.”

“Here!”

“Lin Yujie.”

“Right here!”

“…”

Until the last admission ticket was handed out, Jiang Yu hadn’t heard her name called.

Watching the person finish distributing tickets and about to leave, Jiang Yu rushed over.

“Excuse me, I’m Jiang Yu. I filled out a registration form too, is there no admission ticket for me?”

“None. They’re all gone, these are the only admission tickets.”

Jiang Yu bit her lip, “But Editor Huang Ying submitted my registration form for me. How could I not have a ticket? Is there a mistake?”

This opportunity was rare, she couldn’t afford to give it up easily.

Sure enough, when the person heard “Huang Ying,” their footsteps paused.

“Oh, I see. I’ll go find it, please wait a moment.”

The person quickly went inside and returned after a while, handing her an admission ticket.

“Sorry, the person collecting registration forms missed yours. You can go in and take the exam now.”

Jiang Yu thanked them, not wanting to press the matter further, and hurried inside.

By the time she entered, everyone had already started on the questions.

A lot of people had been filtered out in the first round of registration, so there weren’t many candidates left taking the exam.

After the written test, the leaders would immediately grade the papers and conduct interviews half an hour later.

The exam question was standardized: “Write a news report about ‘Long March One.'”

Many people were scratching their heads, having no idea what “Long March One” was and how to write a news report on it.

Jiang Yu sighed with relief, luckily, she had a habit of collecting newspapers.

“Long March One” was the name of the country’s first independently developed nuclear submarine.

She pondered for a moment before she started writing..
