Chapter 539: Good Lover
The kitsune looked stunned, as if she couldn’t quite believe what she had just heard. Once someone severed ties with the academy, they would lose all memories of it—including any memory of the kitsune herself.
This strange occurrence puzzled the kitsune. She glanced at Ye Wenxin, hesitant to speak, and finally started tugging her skirt from Ye Wenxin’s clasp. “Young lady, you mistake me for someone else.”
The kitsune had been craving her company just a short while ago, yet her attitude had drastically changed in less than half a month.
Ye Wenxin knew she’d been too abrupt in her questioning, but there was no taking back the words that had come out of her mouth. She could only feign confusion.“But I could swear I’ve seen you somewhere before. Are you not my teacher?”
The kitsune’s heart twinged. She had resolved to let Ye Wenxin live on as a human, yet here Ye Wenxin was, standing before her. She couldn’t bear to see this brat die. No one would ever age or die in that dimension, so they could never reincarnate, let alone escape. They would be captives in that place for all eternity.
“No, you’ve got the wrong person… Let’s go.” The kitsune quickly pulled her skirt free and gave the bear demon a hurried signal. Although the bear demon was confused, he nodded. Wrapping an arm around her waist, he and the kitsune left together.
Ye Wenxin remained rooted in place, staring at their retreating figures. Suddenly, she heard Wen Susu’s voice beside her.
“She willingly let you go because she cares about you.” Wen Susu had read the kitsune’s memories. Even though things had not progressed between her and Ye Wenxin the way Wen Susu wanted, there had been a change nonetheless.
The kitsune had developed compassion and humanity that led her to secretly release Ye Wenxin, a human intended as a sacrifice for the dead. Ye Wenxin furrowed her brow.
“That has nothing to do with me anymore. Whatever happens, I’m not going back in there.” She interrupted Wen Susu before moving on with pretend lightheartedness.
Wen Susu chased after her, still trying to convince Ye Wenxin to stick to the script.
“Don’t you think winning over a woman who only likes men exciting?”
“I’m not interested in her,” Ye Wenxin replied dismissively. Her target was the Heavenly Book, Wen Susu, not the kitsune.
“You… have a point. You’re still the Demon Lord, after all.” Wen Susu sounded miffed until something crossed her mind. Her expression shifted to a playful smirk, her voice dripping with temptation. “Or maybe you think you can’t conquer Luo Mo? Because she’s straight, and you’re a woman.”
Ye Wenxin scoffed at Wen Susu’s futile taunting. “Who says? How can anyone be sure if their other half should be a man or a woman before meeting someone they truly love? But even so, hers would never be me…”
She strode forward without pause, but Wen Susu wasn’t ready to give up. “One more partner wouldn’t hurt, would it? Luo Mo needs redemption. Break her curse, and I will handle everything else.” Wen Susu’s voice grew more urgent. She even revealed the hidden truth she’d been concealing.
Ye Wenxin already knew something was wrong with the kitsune. Nevertheless, she asked with interest, “Oh? What curse? Something that kills men?”
“Luo Mo was originally just a fox who couldn’t take human form. Shunned by her kin, she began to wander. I did something foolish to help her transform into a human.” A rare trace of disquiet showed on Wen Susu’s face. Her admission immediately reminded Ye Wenxin of the events at the academy.
Ye Wenxin wanted to hear the whole story. However Wen Susu had no intention of continuing. Playing it cool, she resumed walking with Wen Susu quietly trailing behind. As she strolled aimlessly, she noticed the streets were bustling with demons in human form.
Demons typically had weak bloodlines and few numbers. Yet, this city was packed with demons chatting and socializing while disguised as humans. The number here alone might surpass all the demons across the continent. Although it wasn’t Liu Churan causing mayhem this time, given their rapidly increasing population, these demons would not take long to form an army of their own.
Wen Susu mistook Ye Wenxin’s silence as interest and was ready to reveal part of what they had been doing. But when she turned around, she saw Ye Wenxin crouching to pick up a discarded, chipped bowl.
“What are you doing?”
“Thought I’d try a new profession because I’m bored,” Ye Wenxin replied, casually summoning a few furballs to have them search for the kitsune. She had no intention of returning herself. However, if the kitsune were to beg her to come back… Well, that would be a different story.
Compared to a conventional honey trap, the wounded act seemed far better suited when dealing with the kitsune. So Ye Wenxin settled in and waited patiently. The furballs returned not long after and guided Ye Wenxin to the kitsune.
She saw the kitsune and the bear demon watching a play together, giving her a glimpse of the demon kind’s inclinations. Rather than reveal herself immediately, Ye Wenxin observed the kitsune’s interactions with the bear demon from afar.
It didn’t take long after the play began for the bear demon’s hands to wander. The kitsune’s expression grew uncomfortable. While the actors on stage performed scenes of life’s struggles, the kitsune and the bear demon were engaging in a silent battle down below. Despite the kitsune’s obvious displeasure, the bear demon seemed determined to get handsy.
Frustrated, the kitsune immediately got up and walked away. The bear demon kept following her, clueless about what he had done to upset her. Observing up to this point, Ye Wenxin finally settled on a strategy. After wrapping some tattered cloth around herself, she embraced her new profession — a beggar.
The reality for a maid cast out by her employer was not so romantic. She would likely become someone’s plaything or, at best, find a new master. If Ye Wenxin were a maid, she would rather beg than sacrifice her dignity. At least she was wealthy in spirit that way.
More importantly, this guise would be her quickest ticket back to the academy.
“I knew you wouldn’t be so heartless.” Overjoyed at seeing Ye Wenxin finally taking action, Wen Susu gave her a brief, excited hug.
Ye Wenxin pushed Wen Susu away in annoyance and held a finger to her lips, signaling for silence. Wen Susu immediately transformed into a book and slipped into a hidden corner.
Soon after, the kitsune appeared in the alley with the bear demon in tow. This alley was an unavoidable portion of the fastest way to the academy. Angered by the bear demon’s advances, the kitsune seemed intent on returning to the academy.
She walked briskly. Ye Wenxin did not attempt to call out but raised her bowl higher. However, the kitsune passed right by without noticing.
Reply to Julien: I’m guessing your comment last chapter was about the peach blossom on Wenxin’s back? Considering Wen Susu was the only one around when she felt the pain last chapter, yeah, it could be her. And it was also stated that she’s been secretly watching Wenxin and the kitsune, so that’s probably why there are times Wenxin’s back hurt while she’s with the kitsune.
