From Fiancée to Slum : A Tale of Loss Chapter 63

Chapter 63 : What good partner can I find?

“Yes, I’m here with my boyfriend,” Jiang Yu replied calmly, nodding her head.

Duan Yuzhen’s expression shifted slightly, surprised that Jiang Yu had found a boyfriend so quickly.

She scoffed, “Where is your boyfriend? He wouldn’t be too scared to show up, would he? After all, what kind of good match can a country girl like you find?”

Duan Yuzhen was anxious, after losing her job and with the recent incident involving He Feiyan, her family was increasingly displeased with her.

Lin Donghua seemed to want to throw her out, constantly criticizing her.

Unable to bear it anymore, she hastily entered a relationship with Yan Wenxuan, making sure to confirm that he had broken up with Zhang Xiyue beforehand.

She didn’t want the rumor to spread that she had stolen her best friend’s boyfriend, which would ruin her reputation.

“Wenxuan, you go buy the tickets, I want to see ‘The Red Detachment of Women,'” she said.

Yan Wenxuan smiled gently, nodding in agreement.

But when he checked his pockets, his face fell.

“Oh no, Yuzhen, I think I’ve lost my money.”

Jiang Yu was speechless, suspecting that Yan Wenxuan had done the same to trick He Feiyan before.

Not wanting to lose face in front of Jiang Yu, Duan Yuzhen quickly said, “I have some money, you go buy the tickets.”

However, she only had a large bill, so she grit her teeth and handed it over to Yan Wenxuan.

After he bought the tickets, he naturally pocketed the change.

Duan Yuzhen, who cared about her image, felt too embarrassed to ask for it back.

“The movie is about to start, let’s go in first. Jiang Yu, where’s your boyfriend? He hasn’t stood you up, has he?” Duan Yuzhen asked on purpose.

Jiang Yu smiled brightly, “Of course not, he just arrived.”

Duan Yuzhen followed her gaze and immediately her expression changed.

Yan Wenxuan felt a painful pinch on his arm from Duan Yuzhen’s grip.

“Yuzhen, what’s wrong?”

Duan Yuzhen forced a smile, “It’s nothing, let’s go in.”

Although she said they should go inside, her feet remained rooted to the spot as she watched He Tingyue walk over to Jiang Yu.

“I brought you soda and some snacks,” He Tingyue said.

Jiang Yu looked closer and saw that the snacks were actually egg cakes and peach crisps.

“Why buy these for just a movie? It’s too wasteful,” she teased, noticing he was sweating.

He Tingyue smiled, “It’s for you, how can that be considered wasteful? If you can’t finish it, you can take it home. Otherwise, how boring would it be to watch a movie without any snacks?”

Duan Yuzhen felt a pang of jealousy as she watched Yan Wenxuan with empty hands, suddenly feeling overshadowed by Jiang Yu.

Jiang Yu took out a handkerchief and offered it to He Tingyue to wipe his sweat, wanting to help lighten his load.

This handkerchief was made from the fabric he had gifted her, pure cotton, with embroidered patterns, and she always carried it with her.

But to her surprise, He Tingyue avoided her hand and slightly lowered his head, “You help me wipe it.”

Jiang Yu felt a rush of shyness and awkwardly dabbed at his forehead.

Duan Yuzhen was almost speechless at the sight.

“Alright, let’s hurry inside, the movie is about to start,” Jiang Yu urged.

When she turned and noticed Duan Yuzhen and Yan Wenxuan still standing there, she felt a spark of mischief and introduced, “Comrade Duan, weren’t you curious about my boyfriend? Now you can see him, this is He Tingyue.”

As soon as those words left her mouth, Duan Yuzhen’s expression darkened even more.

But without waiting for their response, Jiang Yu followed He Tingyue inside.

Her face seemed to glow with excitement.

She couldn’t deny how thrilling it felt just then!

He Tingyue led her to their seats and helped open the soda for her.

“Are you happy?”

Jiang Yu’s cheeks were flushed as she bit her lip.

“I’m happy, seeing her angry makes me very happy. Am I bad?”

He Tingyue handed her the soda and another piece of peach crisp.

“Not at all, it’s quite cute.”

Jiang Yu blushed even more, her eyes glued to the movie screen that had yet to start.

“He Tingyue.”

“Hmm?”

“You’ve changed.”

He Tingyue raised an eyebrow, “How have I changed?”

Jiang Yu furrowed her brow, “You’re a bit… smooth-talking.”

He Tingyue chuckled softly, it was the first time someone had described him as “smooth-talking.”

“Feiyan said that men who can’t speak well don’t attract women.”

He didn’t think of himself as particularly smooth, he just spoke his mind.

He genuinely found Jiang Yu adorable, incredibly adorable.

Jiang Yu couldn’t help but laugh thankfully, the movie started, or she didn’t know how red her face would get.

‘The Red Detachment of Women’ was incredibly famous, not just as a film but also as a comic series and musical drama.

Jiang Yu had seen the comic before, and the content was similar to the movie, but seeing it live made it more vivid.

Especially the main character, Wu Qionghua, with her resolute personality and unyielding spirit, stirred something deep in Jiang Yu’s heart.

She was so engrossed in the movie that she didn’t notice the man beside her watching her.

From the beginning to the end of the film, Jiang Yu appeared particularly animated.

Even after leaving the theater, she couldn’t help but reminisce about the plot.

“The movie was amazing! This was my first time watching a film, and I got to see it with you. I don’t think I’ll ever forget today!”

He Tingyue smiled warmly. This wasn’t his first movie, but it was the first time he had gone to one with Jiang Yu.

He felt he wouldn’t forget today either.

“Do you want to go anywhere else?”

Time flew by too quickly, He Tingyue wished he could stretch each second.

Jiang Yu shook her head, “Let’s go home, I haven’t told my aunt yet.”

She was so happy today and couldn’t wait to share the good news with her aunt.

He Tingyue didn’t insist any longer, helping her onto the back of his bicycle to take her home.

It was still daylight and crowded, so he didn’t accompany her upstairs but only to the entrance.

Though they had just confirmed their relationship today and spent a good amount of time together, he already felt reluctant to part ways.

“Then I’ll go up?”

He Tingyue nodded, “Go ahead.”

He stood downstairs, watching her figure disappear at the staircase and didn’t leave.

He waited for Jiang Yu to reach her floor, standing on tiptoe at the window to wave at him before he rode away.

Once inside, where no one could see, Jiang Yu could no longer suppress her excitement and jumped up with a squeal.

Her aunt wasn’t home yet, but Jiang Yu didn’t have the patience to wait and rushed to the street office to find her, eager to share the news.

However, she ran into Zhuang Yihang at the entrance.

The moment he saw Jiang Yu, he instinctively thought she was looking for him, smiling as he jogged over.

“Comrade Jiang Yu! I was just thinking about finding you.”

Jiang Yu was puzzled, “Why are you looking for me?”

Zhuang Yihang steadied his emotions. His mom had told him not to be too nice to women, or they would get carried away.

He needed to maintain some distance to keep her interested.

“My mom actually has a good impression of you. If you have regrets, I can reluctantly give you another chance.”
