Chapter 79 : He is very good
Jiang Yu’s question put Liu Junmei in a difficult position.
She had only speculated about it in her mind and mentioned it to He Youfu a couple of times at most.
“What do you want me to say, Jiang Yu? Auntie was just guessing, it was offhand and shouldn’t be taken seriously.” Liu Junmei slapped her own mouth twice.
“Don’t take it to heart, don’t take it to heart.”
Jiang Yu’s expression turned serious. “But Auntie, don’t you think Jiang Hao looks a lot like my aunt?”
She had actually been standing at the door for a while and started to connect the dots after hearing Liu Junmei’s words.
Jiang Ye and Jiang Hao were not only the same age but were born one after the other.
Wang Meili had given birth first, followed closely by Yang Cuilan.
However, Wang Meili’s child was taken care of entirely by Old Lady Ye, so there was no chance for Yang Cuilan to swap the two.
Liu Junmei had long suspected this.
She had only kept it to herself, afraid of stirring up trouble.
“Jiang Yu, just pretend you didn’t hear any of this. You’re getting married soon, don’t worry about family matters,” Liu Junmei advised.
Jiang Yu shook her head slowly, her face serious.
If Jiang Ye were truly her biological brother, she couldn’t remain indifferent.
He Youfu shot Liu Junmei a glare and said irritably, “I told you to keep quiet, your mouth has no filter! You can’t keep anything to yourself!”
He paced back and forth in the yard, sighing heavily.
This was truly a troublesome matter.
“Jiang Yu, there are some things we can tell you, but you must promise not to tell anyone that you heard it from us.”
Jiang Yu nodded solemnly.
“Uncle Youfu, I promise. If I ever leak this, then let me—”
“Alright, it’s not that serious. Your aunt and I just want to live a peaceful life, we don’t want to stir up trouble.”
Especially since it involved the fortune teller.
“Close the door, let’s talk inside.”
Jiang Yu quickly shut the door and followed them inside.
Liu Junmei was the one who had discovered these things.
Years ago, just days before Wang Meili gave birth, Old Lady Ye appeared particularly melancholic. When others asked her what was troubling her, she wouldn’t say a word.
“Others might not have noticed, but I saw your grandmother meeting with Zhang Pozi from Yunjiao Village.”
Zhang Pozi was a well-known fortune teller in the area.
Later, during turbulent times, she was even taken away for criticism.
However, as someone without family or children, she wasn’t afraid.
After being criticized, she continued her old business, though she had to operate in secret.
Liu Junmei sighed, “Out of curiosity, I couldn’t help but inquire, and I found out that your grandmother had gone to Zhang Pozi for a fortune telling.”
“Whose fortune was she telling?” Jiang Yu asked.
Liu Junmei replied, “She wanted to know the gender of the child in your mother’s womb.”
Since Wang Meili’s first pregnancy resulted in twins, both girls, Old Lady Ye was quite dissatisfied.
Her second pregnancy was urgent and not going well.
Perhaps because of this, Old Lady Ye sought out Zhang Pozi.
Zhang Pozi charmed her by saying that Wang Meili’s second child would definitely be a boy, but it would bring misfortune, causing harm to the family.
With him in the house, the Jiang family would surely be unsettled.
Jiang Yu coldly smiled and continued, “Just as it happens, my mom actually gave birth to a son. My grandmother must have completely believed Zhang Pozi’s words. And then Yang Cuilan also had a son. She knew that if she handed the child over to the third branch, with my grandmother around, the child would definitely have a good life. Plus, she already had a bad relationship with my mom. So the two of them conspired to swap the kids?”
Liu Junmei shook her head. “Your grandmother’s dealings with Zhang Pozi are what I found out through inquiries, and they’re mostly accurate because after your mom gave birth, she brought quite a few gifts to thank Zhang Pozi. But the idea of switching the children is purely my speculation, I have no evidence.”
She happened to be present when Yang Cuilan gave birth and even helped with the delivery.
After the child was born, she was the first to hold him and remarked that the child’s eyes and nose looked just like Yang Cuilan’s.
Yang Cuilan had slitty eyes and a garlic bulb nose, and so did that child.
However, two days later, when she brought eggs to the house and held the child again, she found that the child had transformed into having peach blossom eyes and a well-defined nose.
You see, while Wang Meili might have a flawed character, her looks were top-notch, otherwise, Jiang Yonghua wouldn’t have taken a liking to her and insisted on marrying her.
She had grown suspicious and had only mentioned it in front of He Youfu.
He Youfu had told her to forget about it and act as if she didn’t know anything.
Years later, bringing it up was still difficult for her, as it was a very sensitive topic that would offend people on both sides.
“Jiang Yu, now that you know about this, please don’t mention it to anyone. I’m really afraid of getting caught up in any trouble,” Liu Junmei said earnestly.
Jiang Yu repeatedly assured her, “Auntie, don’t worry. I’ll say it’s just my own suspicion and that I investigated it.”
After leaving the village leader’s house, the moon was high in the sky.
Jiang Yu let out a slow breath, her heart heavy.
She had loved her brother when she was young, and she had thought about protecting Jiang Hao.
But over time, she realized her position in the family was far inferior to Jiang Hao’s.
He was the son and didn’t have to work for their parents’ love, just by being male, he received affection from both parents and his grandmother.
He didn’t need to do chores, and in their household, food was always reserved for him first.
He could bully his sisters without fear of parental reprimand.
But she couldn’t fight back, if she hurt her brother, she would be punished.
Jiang Hao lived comfortably at home, but what about Jiang Ye?
She had no doubt that Yang Cuilan knew Jiang Ye’s true identity otherwise, she wouldn’t have been so quick to hit and scold him.
That night, Jiang Yu was restless, turning over in bed.
“Big sister, can’t you sleep? Is it because Jiang Ye got hit?” Jiang Xin was also awakened.
Jiang Yu replied, “What do you think of Jiang Ye?”
Jiang Xin was silent for a moment before saying, “Very pitiful.”
She thought Jiang Ye was even more pitiful than herself, at least Wang Meili and Jiang Yonghua rarely hit their children and never beat them so badly.
“He’s a good person,” Jiang Xin added.
Jiang Yu turned over. “Why do you say that?”
“Before, when the dog at Grandma Wang’s house stole my things, Jiang Ye protected me. My brother never protects me, he just bullies me with them.”
Jiang Xin disliked Jiang Hao very much.
Jiang Yu patted her head and said no more.
“Go to sleep.”
After talking with Jiang Xin, her heart felt a little lighter.
She could completely ignore family matters as Liu Junmei said, after all, she would be getting married.
But when it came to Jiang Ye, she not only had to care but also had to clear his name.
This matter, she was determined to handle!
With that thought, Jiang Yu fell into a deep sleep.
The next day, she was woken up by Jiang Ting’s voice.
“What time is it? Why is she still sleeping?”
Wang Meili lightly scolded, “Be quiet, don’t wake your sister.”
“Mom, you’re so biased! I’ve never slept in, if I sleep even a minute longer, you’d scold me!”
Jiang Ting was jealous to the point of madness, wondering why Jiang Yu was always better than her in every way!
