Chapter 107 : I will marry you!
Aunt Er’s thoughts weren’t surprising, even Jiang Yonghua and Wang Meili shared the same view.
In fact, most people in Nanghe Village thought this way.
Jiang Yu had no intention of arguing with her, it wasn’t easy to shake such long-standing beliefs.
“Aunt , you should talk to my husband about that. He actually wants me to work,” she said.
Just mentioning He Tingyue usually silenced them.
Wang Moli scoffed, “Anyway, once I get married, I definitely won’t work. Women should have children and take care of them, why would I go out and seek suffering?”
Jiang Yu didn’t argue with her instead, she nodded. “That’s true, managing a household and raising kids is already quite an achievement.”
Taking care of the home front allows the other partner to charge forward, and that’s how a family works, supported by both sides’ efforts.
But He Tingyue had said they shouldn’t have children for the next two years, and Jiang Yu still wanted to try finding a job.
A job that would not only earn money but also help her establish herself in society.
Just then, someone outside shouted for Jiang Yongguo.
“Yongguo! Quick, come see! Your daughter Jiang Li fell into the pond!”
There was a pond behind the mountains of Nanghe Village, and even in the scorching summer, it remained cool.
The village kids loved to play there, but the pond was deep and dangerous, no child dared to go in, or they’d surely face a stern punishment.
Upon hearing that Jiang Li had fallen into the water, everyone panicked, forgetting their previous conversations, and rushed towards the pond.
Although Jiang Yu had a poor relationship with Jiang Li, she couldn’t help but go take a look, given the seriousness of the situation.
What no one expected was the shocking scene by the pond.
Jiang Li had nearly drowned and seemed somewhat disoriented, clinging to Zeng Chang, burying her face in his chest, shouting, “I don’t care! You saw my body and touched me, you must be responsible for me!”
Zeng Chang “?”
He never imagined that this outing would lead him, a lifelong bachelor, to suddenly gain a wife!
He certainly had no objections to such a young wife.
“Okay, okay! I’ll take responsibility! I’ll marry you!”
Jiang Li was taken aback, she was so focused on grabbing onto someone that she hadn’t even noticed who had saved her.
Now, hearing that voice, something felt off.
Jiang Yongguo and Yang Cuilan arrived late, almost fainting from shock.
“Jiang Li! Are you out of your mind? Let him go!” Jiang Yongguo shouted angrily.
He felt like he had lost all face.
Jiang Li was startled, quickly pushing away to see.
Zeng Chang’s face was right in front of her. “Wife, I will marry you!”
“Ah! Ah! Ah!!!”
Jiang Li punched him squarely in the nose, then fainted from the shock.
Zeng Chang watched as she fell toward the pond and quickly grabbed her clothing.
To his surprise, the fabric was so thin that it tore, ripping sound echoed.
He hurriedly wrapped her in his other arm, using his body to shield her from the crowd’s view.
“Everyone, get lost! You’re not allowed to look at my wife!”
Yang Cuilan rolled her eyes, nearly fainting herself.
Jiang Yu slapped her hand down. “Aunt, if you faint too, what will happen to Jiang Li? Hurry and help carry her back!”
As for marriage discussions, that was another matter.
Jiang Yu felt a headache coming on. If Jiang Li ended up with Zeng Chang, what would that make their family relations?
They carried Jiang Li back home and called for Old Zhang to take a look.
Old Zhang took one glance and said, “If she doesn’t want to wake up, I can’t help her.”
This was clear enough, Jiang Li was pretending to be unconscious.
Yang Cuilan slapped her, “If you keep pretending, we’ll just arrange your marriage right away!”
Finally, Jiang Li whined and woke up, diving into Yang Cuilan’s arms.
“Mom, I don’t want to marry! Who’s that man? He’s old and ugly! The one I asked Ershuan to call wasn’t him…”
Yang Cuilan felt a pang in her heart and instinctively glanced at Jiang Yu.
Anger surged within her as she patted Jiang Li’s back forcefully.
“Are you trying to die?!”
Jiang Yu sneered. “Doesn’t Jiang Li know who she asked Ershuan to find?”
Jiang Li was caught off guard by Jiang Yu’s presence, her cries halting as she buried her face deeper into Yang Cuilan’s embrace.
Yang Cuilan pleaded, “Jiang Yu, please think of a way. What is Jiang Li going to do now?!”
In front of so many people, with her clothes torn, even if they discussed marriage later, it wouldn’t look good.
Jiang Yu coldly snorted. “Either you marry him, or you can see if you can find someone better later. Aunt, you should consider it.”
Jiang Li cried out in despair, “What’s so good about that man? He’s so old and short! I won’t marry him!”
Yang Cuilan thought for a moment, she hadn’t seen Zeng Chang before.
“Jiang Yu, do you know him?”
Jiang Yu nodded. “He helps in the kitchen at the cafeteria in Factory Two. He’s from our compound and a widower, he hasn’t remarried in years.”
Yang Cuilan’s interest piqued. “Doesn’t he have any kids?”
“No, he’s been single all these years.”
But Jiang Yu knew that Zeng Chang was a loyal pursuer of Sun’s mother. Ever since Sun’s mother became a widow, Zeng Chang had been following her around, calling him a ‘lickspittle’ wouldn’t be an exaggeration.
Whether Jiang Li was with Zeng Chang was hard to say if it was good or bad.
Yang Cuilan nodded. “I understand now. Please have Xiao He keep him occupied while I talk to Jiang Li.”
Jiang Yu didn’t respond and turned to leave.
Once she shut the door, Yang Cuilan began to persuade her. “Zeng Chang is decent, at least he’s a city person with a stable job, and he doesn’t have any kids. Once you give him a son and take control, everything he has will be yours.”
Jiang Li wasn’t unaware of this, but she just couldn’t get over her feelings.
She was holding her breath, “But he’s so old, he could be my dad!”
“What’s wrong with being old? If he’s old, you have the chance to outlive him! In ten or eight years, when he’s gone, it won’t be hard for you to remarry. Li, you’re my only daughter, how could I harm you? Whether our family can change its fortune depends on you.”
Having Jiang Tong find a job was out of the question.
But if Jiang Li married someone from the city, it could give Jiang Tong a boost, and the family would have hope.
“He’s ugly too,” Jiang Li mumbled.
Yang Cuilan retorted, “Don’t think I don’t know what you’re really thinking. Are you plotting against He Tingyue? If you’re looking for a partner like him, let me tell you clearly, you’re dreaming! There aren’t many people like him in all of North City!”
She pushed Jiang Li away and stood up.
“Enough talk, clean yourself up and come out. Make a good impression. I’ll have him stay for lunch so our families can discuss the marriage and settle it quickly.”
While He Tingyue was still around, perhaps Zeng Chang would give some face and offer a good betrothal gift.
