Chapter 56
Chairman Feng arrived late, an hour past the scheduled time.
Old Luo, who had just turned eighty, was still energetic, holding prayer beads in his hand. Seeing someone arrive, he politely stood up.
“Please, have a seat.”
Chairman Feng loosened his collar and smiled warmly, “I’m really sorry to keep you waiting so long. I couldn’t leave the hospital and had a lot of issues to deal with.”
Feng Chengze’s attitude was evident; he really didn’t want to have any form of relationship with the Luo family. To put it bluntly, even though the Luo family was a mess internally, they still cared about their reputation externally. People often didn’t focus on the accident but tried to dig out the reasons behind it, finding an excuse for the perpetrator.
However, it was impossible for the Feng family to suffer in silence. Thus, they directly alerted Old Luo. Except for a few he particularly doted on, the rest of his many grandchildren were no different from the vases in his house. Vases were only for decoration. If they caused trouble, they would naturally be moved far away. If necessary, they could even be smashed and thrown away.
Hearing Chairman Feng’s words, Old Luo’s face stiffened, and then he smiled, “My useless grandson is still waiting outside. Should I let him come in and apologize?”
Chairman Feng raised his hand to stop him, “No need.”
He smiled, “I was unruly when I was young, and now that I’m old, I want to set an example for my granddaughter. I haven’t even met his father, so meeting him directly…” He shook his head, “It’s inappropriate.”
He thought, eighty years old is indeed old. He looked like he was seventy, and his thinking had slowed down. Otherwise, why would he say such nonsense? Even the father wasn’t qualified to speak in front of him, and he wanted to see the son?
Old Luo’s expression froze, and he gripped the head of his cane tightly. The rest of the conversation was about explaining to the Feng family. Half an hour later, Chairman Feng left in high spirits, while Old Luo was so upset that he needed his assistant to give him heart medication. He waved his hand and roared, “Call that…”
He paused, unable to remember his grandson’s name.
The assistant prompted, “Luo Chong.”
“Call him in.”
Luo Chong had indeed acted impulsively today. His circle of friends had gathered at noon, and someone had complained about almost being dragged by an uncle to fish by the lake. It wouldn’t have been a problem, but hearing that the two sons of the Feng family were also going, he decided not to go and embarrass himself. Feng Chengze was naturally out of his league; even though their families had interacted for generations, he wasn’t in the same world as them. Someone mentioned Feng Yu, who had returned and was a hot commodity in Jing City’s marriage market.
In Luo Chong’s mind, his current brother-in-law was not as good as Feng Yu. He was overjoyed when his sister finally found happiness, but then Feng Yu returned. He didn’t know if his sister hated him, but he did. Old and new grudges surged, and he grabbed his car keys and left. He hadn’t planned to do anything serious. He just wanted to stop the car and warn the woman to come at him directly if she had issues instead of using underhanded methods. But he never expected Feng Yu and Feng Chengze to be in the car!
Now, he was sweating, and his back was cold. His legs felt like they were filled with lead as he was dragged in. Before he could speak, his grandfather’s cane struck him hard, making his bones feel like they were shattering, and he spasmed in pain.
Old Luo, panting heavily, threw the cane to his assistant, the meaning clear.
No matter how he was questioned, Luo Chong gritted his teeth and repeated, “It was an accident, I didn’t see clearly, I didn’t know it was Mr. Feng’s car.”
Old Luo laughed angrily, “Didn’t realize we had a blind person in the family. Your parents hid it well.”
He called for a lawyer to reallocate the inheritance. Over the years, he had used this tactic to toy with his children, giving more money to those who pleased him and taking it away from those who didn’t. If the grandson wasn’t clear-headed, it was likely the father’s fault for not teaching him well.
“An idiot who can’t even teach his son doesn’t deserve anything. Even if you give him something, it’s like throwing it into the water.”
In the Luo residence, some were laughing, some were cursing, and some were crying. Luo Chong knew he would soon leave Jing City and would never have the chance to return. With the little time he had left, he endured the pain and sent a long message to Luo Xuan, coordinating their statements. He insisted that he alone was responsible for the incident and that it had nothing to do with her.
Late that night, the car carrying the nearly lifeless Luo Chong was forced to stop on the road.
Chen Xiuren lowered the car window, took a handkerchief from his pocket, and leisurely wiped his watch, sighing, “Old Luo is really careless, even throwing trash abroad. It’s an eyesore. Fortunately, I’m currently working on environmental protection, so leave it to me.”
The watch was nice, but he wondered how Chengze could bear to part with it. Thinking of this, he added a few comforting words when replying to Feng Chengze’s message: “I’ve stopped it. Don’t worry about my work. Take care of your health, rest well, and don’t overwork yourself. 😊😊”
While Ji Qingyu was showering in the hospital room, Feng Chengze read Chen Xiuren’s message, put away his phone, and first visited the driver’s hospital room. They were not on the same floor, and the driver’s wife and daughter were there, looking very uneasy. After giving a few instructions, he left.
“Master looks so calm.”
The driver’s wife was tidying up the bed, sighing, “It’s like nothing happened. Aren’t rich people supposed to be particularly afraid of death?”
“Exactly…” The driver sipped his porridge, took a deep breath, and lowered his voice, “At that moment, I was so scared I didn’t even care about my own injuries. When I looked back, I saw him helping the Second Young Master, and he could still call Chairman Feng.”
He couldn’t quite remember the content of the call. He only vaguely remembered Master calmly looking at the sports car that had accidentally crashed into them and saying to Chairman Feng on the other end of the line, “No problem, everything went smoothly.”
“Is this considered a work injury?” The driver’s wife quickly brought up what she was more concerned about, “Did they say how much compensation you’ll get and how long you’ll be on paid leave?”
The driver chuckled, “They did.”
He mentioned a number.
The daughter, who was playing on her phone, looked up in shock, “That much!!”
“Chairman Feng said I was also frightened, so it’s deserved.”
The family of three happily discussed whether to go on a vacation during the break. Meanwhile, Feng Chengze took the elevator upstairs, stood by the window in the corridor for a moment, took off his glasses, pinched the bridge of his nose, and then walked towards Feng Yu’s hospital room.
Feng Yu had already woken up. His injuries were not severe, just minor.
His head was bandaged, and he was lying flat on the bed, staring blankly at the ceiling.
Feng Chengze stood at the door, looking at his brother through the glass with a complex expression. He knew that a person’s subconscious reaction in that moment was the truest. Because of this, he was willing to take a risk. Feng Yu, in the hospital room, seemed to sense something. He turned his neck and unexpectedly met Feng Chengze’s gaze.
Feng Chengze pushed open the door and walked in steadily. Like any concerned older brother, he picked up the medical report hanging at the end of the bed and flipped through it, “Does your head still hurt?”
Feng Yu didn’t want to talk to him and closed his eyes wearily.
“Dad should have told you.” Feng Chengze sat on the sofa, crossed his legs, and casually mentioned, “What kind of trouble did you get into with the Luo family this time?”
Feng Yu’s head was splitting, and he coldly replied, “Don’t disgust me.”
Feng Chengze nodded thoughtfully, “You didn’t provoke them?”
Feng Yu couldn’t stand it anymore. Ignoring the pain in his head, he stood up and said, “If you’re so idle, you can go investigate.”
“But I’m planning to leave this matter for you to investigate.”
Feng Chengze glanced at the green plant on the coffee table, “How about setting the deadline before you return to Mexico?”
Feng Yu sneered, “The group and the Feng family are not under your control yet.”
“Fine.”
Feng Chengze crossed his hands on his knees and calmly said, “Then let’s consider this as you not having clarified things with the Luo family, letting them vent their anger again by forcing a car crash.”
Feng Yu got out of bed, his steps heavy with pressure, and stood in front of Feng Chengze. He had long learned to control his emotions, but when Feng Chengze mentioned the incident from five years ago, his jaw tightened, and his facial muscles trembled, “Are you reminding me or yourself that if it weren’t for that incident, I would be the one by her side now?”
Although Feng Chengze had mentally prepared for this conversation, it was more unpleasant than he had imagined.
“It seems,” Feng Chengze looked up, “you have now accepted the fact that she is my wife?”
“Wife?”
Feng Yu’s smile didn’t reach his eyes. His gaze dropped to the wedding ring on Feng Chengze’s ring finger, “It’s only been a few years, brother. Have you forgotten how you begged for this marriage?”
Feng Chengze’s expression changed slightly. A layer of icy frost seemed to cover him.
“It seems that living a happy life does make one forget many things.” Feng Yu’s gaze was like a blade, scraping across Feng Chengze’s face as he spoke each word clearly, “Ask yourself, if Qingyu hadn’t been pregnant, would she be with you? Do you need me to remind you that before she discovered Jiayuan’s existence, she never, ever thought of being with you?”
Feng Chengze’s hands, resting on his knees, unconsciously clenched.
The veins on the back of his hands became visible.
Having been brothers for many years, Feng Yu could easily tell that Feng Chengze was angered, so he stepped closer. After that day, bringing up old matters hurts both sides. With each breath, the invisible glass shards in the air entered his body, his blood. “Qingyu moved out of the apartment, remember?”
Years had passed, but Feng Yu still couldn’t forget that day. He didn’t want to act like a stalker, always chasing and blocking her, trying not to disturb her life and make her unhappy. He knew someone was pursuing her, that senior never gave up on her, and even male colleagues from other departments tried to add her on WeChat during her internship. He was anxious, fearing that if he looked away for a moment, she would fall for someone else. He truly lost his composure when a friend saw her getting into a black car. It was late, and the friend vaguely said they couldn’t see the license plate clearly, but it was a Rolls-Royce, seemingly taking her home. Thinking back, the friend probably saw the license plate but didn’t want to say it outright. He was so anxious that he didn’t sleep all night. The next morning, he bit the bullet and decided to find her. He brought her favorite breakfast and some fruit and knocked on her apartment door.
Soon, the door opened from the inside—the words he had prepared stuck in his throat as if filled with cement, rendering him speechless. Inside the apartment, a man was buttoning his shirt, still damp from a recent shower, with wet hair.
A lazy, soft female voice came from inside, “Have you seen my phone? I don’t know where I put it.”
He looked at the man in disbelief, still wondering if he had the wrong door or was seeing things. Otherwise, why would his brother be here?
However, his brother looked at him indifferently the next second and replied, “It’s on the bathroom sink.”
…
Seeing Feng Chengze’s stern expression, Feng Yu’s eyes held a faint mockery as he whispered, “So, can you accept the fact that without Jiayuan, you wouldn’t be her husband?”
