Luo Yu froze for a moment.
It was already 2:54 in the early hours of the morning?
He looked around.
The hospital lobby, even at this hour, had all payment counters open, with long lines of people waiting to see a doctor.
Hearing Dr. Duan call for him, Luo Yu thought about how hard healthcare workers must have it, and quickly walked over to a tall, thin young man with glasses.
The man, who had been sitting in a blue chair at the edge of the lobby waiting area, quickly stood up when he saw them approaching.
Dr. Duan, now fully in character as a proper doctor, spoke sternly:
“Counselor Liu, the patient’s high fever has subsided, but due to the effects of the fever, there’s been some brain damage leading to amnesia. We’ll need to monitor his condition to see how it progresses.”
“Please take him back to the school and keep a close eye on him. If there are any issues, bring him to the hospital right away.”
Luo Yu slowly raised his eyes, staring at the back of Dr. Duan’s head.
Clearly, his counselor had no idea that he’d actually died just moments ago.
Dr. Duan must’ve planned to cremate him immediately and only report it afterward.
The counselor, as thin as a bamboo pole, shook Dr. Duan’s hand excitedly, expressing his gratitude repeatedly. He then turned to Luo Yu, promising he’d help him reintegrate into school life.
Luo Yu shifted his investigative gaze from Dr. Duan to the counselor, then softened his eyes and gave an innocent smile:
“Counselor, you’re just too kind!”
“Xiao Luo, have you really lost your memory? You don’t even remember me? I’m your counselor, Brother Liu… this is a real mess…”
Hearing his words, Luo Yu pursed his lips in grievance, lowering his gaze sadly.
Seeing the smile fade from Luo Yu’s face, Brother Liu felt both sympathy and heartache, putting an arm around the unlucky student’s shoulders.
“It’s okay, don’t worry. When we get back, I’ll explain everything to your classmates, and they’ll all be happy to help you out.”
Luo Yu swallowed back a choked “mm” and followed Brother Liu out of the hospital.
But then, out of the corner of his eye, he spotted a sign by the entrance.
[Affiliated Sleep Hospital of Medical University, City A]
A sleep hospital?
Due to his mission, Luo Yu was especially sensitive to those two words.
Why would a hospital have such a strange name? Was it specifically for treating insomnia?
“Come on, let’s get in the car; we’ll head back to the school first.”
Luo Yu snapped back to attention and saw Brother Liu pointing toward a bright red car in the hospital parking lot. He nodded and quickly slipped into the passenger seat.
As Brother Liu drove out of the hospital gate, Luo Yu noticed several brightly colored cars pulling into the lot.
Does everyone in this world prefer such intense, vibrant car colors?
At night, it certainly stood out.
And here it was, almost three in the morning, yet so many people were coming to the hospital.
Looking out the window, Luo Yu wondered.
Could something serious have happened nearby last night? He wondered if it was related to his illness.
He rested his elbow on the door panel and gently held his head, his voice soft.
“Brother Liu, I can’t remember… what happened to me? How did I end up in the hospital?”
Brother Liu explained while driving, “You suddenly got a high fever in your dorm—up to 42 degrees! You were unconscious! I’ve never seen a fever that high in my life! Luckily, you’re okay now…”
A sudden fever, followed by unconsciousness and hospitalization.
Luo Yu took note, deep in thought.
He had no idea what had happened between the time his original self lost consciousness and his eventual death, but that Dr. Duan must have had a hand in it.
This new world had been full of thrills right from the start; Luo Yu’s heart still hadn’t calmed down. Even at this late hour, he felt no sleepiness as he silently watched the scenery outside.
The car soon merged into a busy, bustling street, joining a crowd of vehicles, and the pace slowed.
This looked like the heart of the city.
Bright streetlights pierced the night, making the street as bright as day. Loudspeakers blasted store announcements, and the sidewalks were packed with people.
As Luo Yu watched, his eyes suddenly widened.
He glanced at the car’s digital clock—
[AM 03:20]
It was three in the morning!
Yet the entire street was lit up, crowded and lively, with nobody asleep!
Luo Yu instinctively wanted to ask something, but then he heard Brother Liu happily humming a song, completely unfazed by the scene.
He swallowed his question.
Looks like people in this world are especially energetic, with such vibrant nightlife!
Soon, they left the central street and drove past lush trees on both sides of the road, though the streetlights remained bright. After an unknown amount of time, Brother Liu parked the car in the school’s parking lot near the entrance.
“Come on, let’s get you back to your dorm.”
Luo Yu nodded eagerly. “Thank you so much for all your help, Brother Liu!”
Finally, he could get back to the dorm and complete his much-needed sleep mission for the day!
Before coming to this world, Luo Yu had been a freshman in college himself.
He’d only seen campus at three in the morning once—last night, when he was writing a paper in the study hall.
The entire campus was peacefully sleeping in the dark, except for the study room lights.
Then, the next morning, he’d died.
But now, as Luo Yu stepped through the school gate, he saw groups of students riding their bikes to the entrance, parking them, and cheerfully scanning their cards to leave.
“Going out this late?” Luo Yu finally couldn’t hold back and blurted out.
“Late?” Brother Liu glanced at his phone and shrugged, “It’s almost four o’clock, so I guess it is a bit late. But it’s finals week, and there’s no class at five a.m., so going out around now is pretty normal.”
Five a.m. classes?
The term hit Luo Yu like a bomb, leaving him speechless for several seconds.
As they made their way to the dorm building, they passed an outdoor track where the bright lights illuminated the field, crowded with students jogging.
Five a.m. classes, four a.m. jogs?
This world was certainly crazy.
“We’re here. What are you looking at?” Brother Liu followed Luo Yu’s gaze. “Thinking about running a few laps? You just recovered; you should rest a few days before exercising.”
Luo Yu snapped out of it, nodded, and quietly followed Brother Liu into a six-story dormitory building with cream-colored walls.
In the management room on the first floor, the dorm supervisor noticed them and quickly came over, saying, “Oh my, Xiao Luo, are you all right?”
Are you staying up late too, ma’am?
Suppressing his shock, Luo Yu put on a soft smile and politely answered, “I’m fine! Thank you for your concern!”
“Oh, good, good. I’m so glad.” The supervisor affectionately patted his head.
Brother Liu sighed, politely asking, “Auntie Zhu, Xiao Luo’s fever has gone down, but his memory has been affected. If he has any issues in the dorm, could you please look after him?”
“Oh, this poor child, what bad luck.” Auntie Zhu, feeling sorry for him, pressed a handful of candy into Luo Yu’s hand.
He unwrapped a milk candy and smiled sweetly at Auntie Zhu, aiming to win her favor.
“Not unlucky at all! Now that I’ve got Auntie Zhu’s candy, I feel so happy!”
Auntie Zhu beamed and gave him a whole bag of candy.
Brother Liu gestured for him to head upstairs, and after climbing several flights, Luo Yu finally arrived at his dorm, Room 405.
No matter what happened, he’d deal with it after some sleep.
Thinking this, Luo Yu watched as Brother Liu knocked on the door, pushed it open, and led him inside.
He took a sharp breath!
What kind of dormitory was this?
“There, Number 01 is yours,” Brother Liu pointed naturally at a brown desk and chair set against the wall.
To the right of the desk was a dark yellow wardrobe, separating his space from Desk Number 02 next to him.
“Luo Yu, you’re back!” A male student rushed over, placing his hand on Luo Yu’s forehead. “Glad your fever went down.”
Brother Liu repeated patiently, “Although Xiao Luo’s fever has subsided, he’s experiencing some memory loss. Qin Li, I’ll leave the task of helping Luo Yu readjust to you.”
“Memory loss?” Qin Li paused, looking at Luo Yu’s blank expression, and immediately felt a pang of sympathy. “Don’t worry, Brother Liu. I’ll take good care of him.”
“Alright then. Call me if anything comes up.” Brother Liu patted Luo Yu on the shoulder and left the dorm.
“Luo Yu, what’s wrong? Are you feeling unwell again?”
Qin Li noticed Luo Yu standing rigidly in the middle of the room, waving his hand in front of his face to get his attention.
Luo Yu finally snapped out of his daze.
He stared around the room, then pointed at the desk and chair set with a shaky smile.
“What kind of dorm is this? Why is there no bed?”
“Bed?” Qin Li’s cheeks flushed slightly. “Luo Yu, what would you need a bed for?”
Seeing his roommate’s flustered expression, Luo Yu felt a bit unsettled, but he tried to keep his tone gentle.
“A bed, of course, is for sleeping.”
What else would it be for?
The flush faded from Qin Li’s face, leaving him puzzled. “Sleeping?”
Just then, Qin Li’s phone rang. He glanced at the caller ID and slapped his forehead.
“I almost forgot! I need to pick up a package from the mail center. If I don’t get it now, it’ll be put in the storage locker, and I’ll have to pay a fee… You take a rest here, Luo Yu. We’ll chat when I get back!”
He grabbed his phone and hurried out the door.
With a loud click, Luo Yu found himself alone in the dorm.
Or rather, he was left with sixteen sets of brown desks and chairs and sixteen dark yellow wardrobes.
The smile vanished from Luo Yu’s face.
His pale fingers pressed lightly on the back of the chair, and he set the bag of milk candies down on the desk.
Whenever there were people around, Luo Yu usually wore a smile.
When he smiled, his innocent puppy-dog eyes squinted a bit, his lips curled in a gentle arc, and he looked like he was asking for something sweetly. If he occasionally pretended to tear up, his expressive eyes looked so heartfelt that the people watching felt they needed to rescue him.
His parents had passed away early in his life, and he knew that this face was his best weapon. If he hadn’t been such a good actor, he might have been bullied to death at school by now.
But when he was alone, Luo Yu economized his emotions.
Right now, for example, he was irritated at not finding a bed.
With pursed lips, he instinctively walked to the end of the dormitory to see if he’d missed anything.
Sure enough, there were two small rooms.
Holding onto the last hope of finding a bed, he turned the handle on one of the doors.
The left room was a bathroom, and the right was a changing room.
A changing room in a college dorm?
Luo Yu frowned and opened the glass door to the balcony.
On the left side of the balcony was a washing machine and a sink, while on the right side, clothes were hanging from a line overhead.
Luo Yu slowly returned to Desk Number 01, dumbfounded, and sat down.
There was no bed in the dorm.
Not only that, but it was 4:30 in the morning, and in this massive sixteen-person dorm room, only he and one other roommate were present.
Luo Yu suddenly looked up.
Maybe they slept somewhere else? That would explain why his roommates weren’t in the dorm so late.
There were so many bizarre things in this new world that the thought of sleeping outside the dorm didn’t even seem strange.
With that, Luo Yu finally began to relax. He planned to ask Qin Li where everyone slept when he returned. Yawning, he felt a wave of exhaustion.
Without a bed, he decided to make do with the desk. He would complete today’s task by resting here for now.
Luo Yu had always been a good sleeper, and soon he drifted off into a deep sleep.
His dreams were a blur of all he’d experienced in the past few days: the sleepless city, the whistling winds over the study hall, and blaring sirens that grew louder and louder.
The sirens?
Luo Yu’s eyes shot open!
At that moment, for the first time since he arrived in this world, he heard a cheerful female voice in his mind:
[Sleep task progress: 1/100]
[Portable space draw available: 1]
Before he could process the “portable space” bit, a blinding light forced him to blink repeatedly.
Once his eyes adjusted, he saw, once again, medical personnel in white coats and masks standing beside him.
Two of them were working together to lift him into a silver, enclosed pod.
