These words seemed like a bolt of lightning piercing into Luo Yu’s brain: “You’re also from another world?!”
When he said this, he was so excited he couldn’t hide his grin.
It was like someone walking in darkness for too long, suddenly seeing the light!
Could it be that he wasn’t the only one who’d crossed over to this world? Was there even an organization? If that were the case, things would be much easier!
However, Wen Shu squinted slowly: “What another world? Is your brain foggy from sleep?”
Luo Yu immediately sensed something was wrong, and the excitement in his chest deflated.
He should’ve known things wouldn’t be so simple.
“I mean, how do you know I truly sleep? How did you figure it out?”
He quickly asked, nervous: “You won’t report me to the Association, right? Who else knows about this?”
If his actual sleeping was that obvious, someone would have reported him long ago. Why did Wen Li and Wen Shu know about this?
“Me? Report to the Association?”
Wen Shu seemed to think of something, letting out a cold laugh. She didn’t pursue his previous words and crossed her arms over her chest:
“There are very few people in this world who can tell the difference between real and fake sleep. So don’t worry; no one can tell.”
“I know you’re actually sleeping simply because…”
Wen Shu deliberately paused before slowly saying:
“Because you can’t take anti-sleep meds at all.”
Now it was Luo Yu’s turn to be stunned.
He pointed to himself: “Me?”
“What do you mean I can’t take them?”
“How could I not?”
Before he came, hadn’t the original body taken anti-sleep meds daily?
“You didn’t know?” Wen Shu wrinkled her nose in surprise. “Then why do you sleep every day?”
What should he know? Luo Yu let out a short laugh:
“I…well…after an illness once, the anti-sleep meds stopped working, so I accidentally fell asleep, and then I found it really comfortable, so I started sleeping every day.”
“You’re pretty gutsy.” Wen Shu pursed her lips and raised an eyebrow, looking at this seemingly well-behaved college student with newfound respect. “Lucky you’re that bold, or you’d be dead by now.”
It was information related to his life!
A hazy truth was about to surge out of Luo Yu’s heart, but he couldn’t grasp it: “What do you mean?”
The smile on Wen Shu’s face faded: “Do you know that your body has developed a severe allergic reaction to anti-sleep meds? Taking them would be certain death.”
Luo Yu was momentarily taken aback: “How do you know?”
“Did you forget?” Wen Shu tugged on her ponytail. “We met in the morgue.”
Luo Yu: …
The memory of his arrival in this world flooded his mind like a torrent!
Luo Yu’s pupils shrank instantly!
“You’re the nurse who was going to cremate me!”
“Yes, but I wasn’t actually planning to cremate you. It’s too complicated to explain in a few words; in short, I can help you.”
Wen Shu released her hands, placing them behind her back:
“If you trust me, then come with me; it’s not convenient to talk here.”
“If you don’t trust me, you’re free to go home and be captured by the Association.”
The Association or the morgue—Luo Yu was speechless about his fate. He could only take a gamble:
“Sister, I’m just an innocent college student. Don’t trick me; I’ll go with you.”
No matter who Wen Shu was, being taken by the Association was bound to end badly.
Besides, he had to find out whether taking anti-sleep meds would actually kill him.
Otherwise, if he struggled through a hundred days of sleep only to start living normally on the hundred-and-first day and then still died, it’d be such a waste!
Wen Shu heard his agreement and looked pleased, quickly typing a message on her phone.
A few minutes later, a giant dark red transport truck slowly approached from a distance.
It parked at a sharp angle, blocking the community gate’s surveillance and stopping in front of some bushes.
Wen Shu beckoned to Luo Yu with her finger: “Come on, get in. I’ll introduce you to our people.”
Seriously, what secret organization uses a massive transport truck as its high-profile mode of transport?
Seeing Wen Shu pull open the truck’s side door and jump in, Luo Yu could only brace himself and follow her into the truck’s compartment.
Wen Shu reached out, gave a skilled pull, and the compartment door closed with a loud boom.
She turned on her phone flashlight, illuminating the dark gray construction materials scattered inside the truck: “Sit wherever; we’ll be there soon.”
“Sister Shu.” Luo Yu didn’t sit down; instead, he stood very close to Wen Shu, his expression calm. “For the past decade or more, I’ve taken anti-sleep meds every day.”
Given the lifestyle of his original body, there should have been no conditions that allowed for daily sleep!
“So what? Why did you suddenly develop an allergy?”
Wen Shu casually found a burlap sack to sit on, sneering slightly:
“Thirty-five years ago, when anti-sleep meds were first marketed, they claimed that clinical trials showed no side effects.”
“But, Luo Yu, do you know this? The entire clinical trial period for anti-sleep meds lasted only five years.”
“Five years of results are being used to make most people in this world take these meds for life!”
“Even if there were no problems in the first five years, what about ten, twenty, or thirty years later?”
Wen Shu’s usually gentle face suddenly showed a fierce hatred.
Luo Yu steadied himself by holding onto the rear door handle of the truck:
“So, after eighteen years of taking them, I suddenly developed an allergic reaction?”
Wen Shu leaned against the door and glanced at him:
“Last time you were taken to the hospital, it was due to an acute allergic reaction to the anti-sleep meds, which led to anaphylactic shock. I don’t know how you managed to survive, but it was nothing short of a miracle.”
Since the day he arrived in this world, a cloud of mystery had loomed in his heart. Now it was finally clear!
So, the original body had died from an allergy to anti-sleep meds!
Thankfully, since he’d arrived, he hadn’t taken the meds and had insisted on sleeping every day. Unexpectedly, this misfortune turned into a blessing…
The truck’s interior was stiflingly hot, but Luo Yu broke out in a cold sweat.
“In a city like A-City, the sleep hospital receives nearly a hundred cases of severe allergic reactions like yours every month.”
“The mortality rate is close to one hundred percent.”
Wen Shu’s voice echoed in the enclosed truck compartment, like a haunting specter.
Suddenly, the truck braked sharply, and even though Luo Yu held onto the handle, he still staggered slightly.
The truck had stopped.
But they’d only been driving for less than five minutes.
Wen Shu stood up, pushed the door open, and jumped out with ease.
Luo Yu followed her, only to find the scene in front of him surprisingly familiar—
Looking around, he realized he was still in the same residential complex, “Insomnia Haven,” where he rented his apartment!
Only now, the truck had brought him, along with the construction materials, to a construction site about a hundred meters from the residential buildings.
The area was fenced off with turf barriers, and only busy construction workers passed by.
“The International Association for Human Advancement, in order to prevent disruptions to the anti-sleep medication plan, has suppressed all cases of allergy-related deaths by covering up the incidents entirely.”
“They secretly ordered sleep hospital doctors to cremate everyone who died from these allergies immediately, under various excuses, to hide the cause of death.”
“Luo Yu, you were just a step away from dying without anyone knowing why.”
Luo Yu slowly turned around, his heartbeat drowning out all surrounding sounds.
Wen Shu was looking at him intently, her lips curled into a scornful smile.
“You should remember Dr. Duan, right? When he saw you come back to life, he panicked, terrified that you’d reveal the secret of the anti-sleep meds, and he almost tried to finish you off in the hospital.”
“He followed you for several days afterward, and only when he realized you truly didn’t know anything did he finally let you go.”
Luo Yu’s lips tightened, and even his breathing felt labored.
“Alright, come with me,” Wen Shu said as she walked forward.
Not far away was a makeshift shelter at the construction site, covered with a fabric canopy, large enough to hold a dozen people. A few workers were scattered around the entrance, sitting on benches and eating.
As Wen Shu approached, the workers nodded at her, clearly familiar with her.
Wen Shu stopped at the door of the shelter, turning to look at Luo Yu:
“All of us here are family and friends of those who died unexpectedly due to allergic reactions to anti-sleep meds.”
“To bring peace to our loved ones, we’ve been secretly fighting against anti-sleep meds, advocating for the return of natural sleep.”
With her hands folded in front of her, Wen Shu looked sincerely at Luo Yu:
“Luo Yu, join us.”
“For yourself, and for others, so that more people can live better in this world.”
The sound of nearby construction drowned out their conversation completely.
The summer sunlight fell on the lawn, making Luo Yu feel slightly dizzy.
It was all too much to take in.
“Do I even have a choice?”
Luo Yu sighed softly, raised his eyes, and smiled at Wen Shu:
“Sister, you already said the Association’s people are standing at my door. I have nowhere to go, and I can’t take anti-sleep meds, so I have to sleep every day…”
“It seems my only option is to follow you.”
“Besides, sleeping really is comfortable. I wouldn’t mind sleeping every day.”
As he spoke, Luo Yu yawned in relief, not even bothering to cover his mouth this time.
After arriving in this world, Luo Yu had only one wish: to live well.
Wen Shu’s anti-sleep med resistance group seemed to offer him both the opportunity to continue sleeping and the means to avoid the lethal effects of the meds.
It sounded like the perfect place for him.
“Then follow us, and you’ll get to sleep as much as you want.”
Wen Shu smiled warmly, turning to press the door handle.
“Welcome to the Hypnos League.”
The Hypnos League…
Luo Yu knew it was inappropriate, but he couldn’t help curling his mouth into a smile.
In this world, that name did indeed carry a spirit of rebellion…
Following Wen Shu up the steps, the dim light in the rest house brightened, revealing a narrow, modest, and empty room ahead.
When he saw the faces of the people standing inside, he was momentarily stunned.
Wen Li was still wearing that familiar white hoodie, casually leaning against the wall. Hearing the door open, he instinctively adjusted his black-framed glasses, then straightened up and took two steps forward.
Wen Shu, walking ahead, turned to look at Wen Li and shrugged indifferently:
“Alright, big brother, here’s your so-called savior junior that you’ve been talking about day and night. I brought him to you.”
“Now, let’s see if he can really save all of us.”
