Chapter 5: Entangled with Gu Qingan
Gu LiLi was looking out the door. When she saw Gu Qingan carrying a woman back, she quickly walked over and greeted him, “Brother, who is she?” The woman’s clothes didn’t look like those of a wealthy family’s daughter.
“She’s a girl I saved on the road just now. Her foot is injured.” Gu Qingan was also helpless. He didn’t know what to do with this girl now.
Gu LiLi’s gaze fell on Zhou Yu, “Why did you bring her back?” Her brother bringing someone back so openly, wasn’t that ruining the girl’s reputation? What if this woman used this to cling to her brother? She had to remember that her brother was going to marry a girl from an official family.
“I can’t just leave her on the road, can I?” As a soldier, he couldn’t do that.
“But what if she clings to you?”
“It shouldn’t happen, right?” Gu Qingan looked at Zhou Yu in his arms uncertainly.
Gu LiLi rolled her eyes, “Why don’t we find a place to settle her while she’s still unconscious?”
“That’s not a good idea.” Gu Qingan hesitated.
“What’s wrong with that? You’re not related to her, saving her is already a kindness. Brother, can you not be so stubborn?” She didn’t want a woman of unknown origin to be her sister-in-law.
Hearing this, Zhou Yu quickly opened her eyes. Gu Qingan was going to be a military commander in the future, she couldn’t miss this opportunity to cling to him.
“Ah~ Who are you?” Zhou Yu screamed in panic, pushing Gu Qingan and trying to break free from his arms.
“Don’t be afraid, I saved you just now.” Gu Qingan quickly explained what had happened earlier.
“Thank you for saving me, I…” Zhou Yu’s eyes welled up, her pitiful appearance made people want to pity her.
“It’s okay, you can stay at my house and recover for the next few days.” Gu Qingan gently comforted Zhou Yu.
Gu LiLi rolled her eyes on the side. She had finally gotten rid of one Ling Yao, and now another woman of unknown origin had come along.
“Thank you! I will definitely repay you.” Zhou Yu looked at Gu Qingan, her tear-filled eyes full of sincerity.
Gu Qingan’s heart skipped a beat, his ears turned slightly red, “You don’t need to worry about it, this is what I should do as a soldier. Just focus on recovering.”
“Just don’t cling to my brother because of this.”
“LiLi.” Gu Qingan looked at Gu LiLi unhappily.
“I don’t care.” Gu LiLi snorted coldly and ran back into the house.
“Did I upset your sister? I’ll go apologize to her. You let me down, I can walk by myself.” Zhou Yu gently patted Gu Qingan’s hand, a hint of shyness on her face.
“It’s okay, she’s just a child, you don’t need to mind her.” Gu Qingan carried Zhou Yu into the house and carefully placed her on a chair in the hall, “I’ll go get you a glass of water.”
“Thank you!” Zhou Yu nodded shyly.
Gu Qingan saw Zhou Yu’s slightly flushed cheeks and felt a strange sense of joy. He turned and walked towards the kitchen.
Zhou Yu curled her lips. Gu Qingan would be hers in this life, no one could take him away.
Gu LiLi came out of the room and saw Zhou Yu sitting in the hall. She walked over, “I warn you not to have any ideas about my brother. My brother is not someone you can dream of.”
“Don’t misunderstand me, I’m just grateful to Brother Gu for saving me. I haven’t thought about clinging to him.”
Zhou Yu caught a glimpse of a green figure out of the corner of her eye, her eyes welled up with a hint of mist. She looked so fragile, like a narcissus swaying in the wind, making people want to protect her.
“LiLi, when did you become so aggressive?” Gu Qingan walked in with a glass of water, his eyes stern as he glared at Gu LiLi.
“Brother Gu, you’ve misunderstood. My sister didn’t say anything.”
“Who is your sister?”
Zhou Yu pursed her lips and lowered her head in grievance.
Gu Qingan walked over to Zhou Yu and handed her the glass, “Have some water.”
“Okay.” Zhou Yu wiped her eyes and took the glass.
Gu LiLi watched the two of them, stomped her foot in anger, and ran out.
“Maybe I should leave.” Zhou Yu put down the glass and looked at Gu Qingan with red eyes.
She had been with Gu Qingan for so many years in her previous life, so she naturally knew what kind of person he was. Her current goal was to make Gu Qingan feel pity for her and fall in love with her.
As for Gu LiLi, she was someone who loved to take advantage of others. She would have plenty of time to deal with her later.
Gu Qingan thought for a moment and asked, “Do you have any family?” After all, she was a girl, it wasn’t very convenient for her to stay at his house.
Zhou Yu shook her head, a tear slid down her cheek as she shook her head, “My mom is dead, my dad sold me to human traffickers. If I go back, he’ll definitely sell me again.”
Gu Qingan couldn’t help but feel sorry for Zhou Yu, “Why don’t you stay at my house for now?”
“But wouldn’t that be too much trouble?”
“It’s okay.”
“When my foot heals, I’ll definitely find a job.”
Gu Qingan smiled, “Just stay here and rest.” She was such a kind and sensible girl.
“Okay.” Zhou Yu nodded shyly, a triumphant smile playing on her lips. Gu Qingan was still as easily swayed as he was in the previous life. She believed that it wouldn’t be long before he fell in love with her.
On the other side, Ling Yao was drying the herbs she had collected today.
“Yaoyao, dinner is ready.” Ling Xuemei called from the kitchen doorway.
“Coming.” Ling Yao spread out all the herbs and placed them on the rack. Then she washed her hands by the well and walked towards the kitchen.
Ling Xuemei handed Ling Yao a bowl of rice.
Ling Yao took the bowl, “Mom, I plan to go to the city tomorrow.”
“Are you going to buy anything?” Ling Xuemei picked up a piece of food and put it in Ling Yao’s bowl. Her family’s living conditions were much better than those of the villagers because she treated people, so as long as it was within her means, she would satisfy her daughter.
“I dug up a wild ginseng in the mountains today. I’m going to the city to see if anyone wants to buy it.” Ling Yao put down the bowl and took out the ginseng wrapped in a handkerchief from her pocket and showed it to Ling Xuemei.
Ling Xuemei took the ginseng and examined it carefully, “This ginseng is of good quality. Look at the veins, they’re like the wrinkles on an old man’s face, each one represents the wind, frost, snow, and rain it has experienced. And its root is so big, it means it’s very old, probably a hundred years old. It’s a treasure.”
“I want to sell it to improve our life. And I plan to do some small business. Now that the reforms have just opened up, it’s the best time to start a business.” Ling Yao shared her thoughts.
Ling Xuemei smiled with satisfaction when she heard this, “You’ve really grown up. Do whatever you want to do, Mom will always support you.”
“Thank you, Mom! You’re the best!” Ling Yao stood up and hugged Ling Xuemei.
“Just now you said you’ve grown up, and now you’re acting like a child again.” Ling Xuemei hugged Ling Yao with a smile, her eyes full of love and indulgence.
