Chapter 11: First Day at the Medical Team
Today is Lin You’s first day reporting to the medical team.
After resting yesterday, her body has mostly recovered. Before Qin Lang left for his morning exercises, he teased her, “Want to take another day off? Going tomorrow would be just as good.”
Lin You threw a pillow at him. “If you don’t leave soon, you’ll be late, and the team leader might give you a punishment.”
“He wouldn’t! The leader’s been really considerate lately,” he laughed, putting the pillow back in place. He leaned down, gave her a quick peck, and left before her blush could deepen.
Later, Qin Lang and Lin You stood together in Captain Song’s office.
“Captain Song, this is Dr. Lin, a PhD graduate in cardiovascular surgery from the Military Medical University. She’s joining us here at the base medical team. Also, she’s my wife. Please, no special treatment necessary,” Qin Lang introduced with a smile.
“Lin You, this is Captain Song,” he continued.
Captain Song observed Lin You her fair, almost translucent skin, and her serene beauty. While impressed, he felt a hint of apprehension.
Lin You stepped forward, “Hello, Captain Song. Qin Lang said you’re incredibly dedicated and professional. I look forward to learning a lot from you.”
“Dr. Lin, it’s an honor for us to have someone of your caliber here at our base. Your presence is truly a privilege.”
“Qin Lang, you’re quite fortunate. Both of you are exceptional people truly a perfect match,” Captain Song remarked.
Lin You smiled. She quickly noted that Captain Song had a knack for diplomacy, able to make her and Qin Lang feel at ease. She understood why he had risen to his position.
“Anyway, I’ll leave you all to it,” Qin Lang said, turning to Lin You. “Have a great first day, work well with your colleagues, and take care. I’ll see you later.” With that, he exited the office.
“Dr. Lin, let’s go introduce you to the rest of the team,” Captain Song said, leading her to the main hall.
“Everyone, gather around for a moment. Since it’s shift change time, I’d like you to meet our new doctor, Dr. Lin, who holds a PhD. Let’s welcome her warmly.”
Lin You noticed that, aside from Captain Song and three male doctors, the rest of the staff consisted of female doctors and nurses.
“Hello, everyone. I’m Lin You. I hope to work well with you all,” she said.
Her arrival surprised the team. Lin You’s presence seemed to add brightness to the place, and some even commented that she might draw more soldiers to the medical center.
Everyone broke into a hushed buzz, admiring her looks. “Wow, her skin is so fair, her eyes are big, her eyelashes are long, her figure is great. She’s so young and already has a PhD. How does she have all these perfect features?”
Their compliments got so enthusiastic that they forgot to clap.
Captain Song cleared his throat, hinting for them to pay attention, but the chatter continued, leaving him momentarily flustered.
Lin You stifled a smile, realizing Captain Song was well liked and friendly. She wasn’t bothered by their casual remarks, instead, it made her think her new colleagues would be easy to get along with.
Captain Song noticed her amusement and felt slightly embarrassed.
“Also, Dr. Lin is married to our squad leader, so let’s give her a warm round of applause,” he added, which got the desired effect as everyone finally clapped enthusiastically.
“Please don’t feel pressured because of Qin Lang,” Lin You added. “He told me you’re all great, and I’m grateful to be here.”
The head nurse, an older woman, approached with a friendly smile. “Dr. Lin, welcome. I’m Head Nurse Deng. Let me introduce you to everyone here.”
“Nice to meet you, Head Nurse Deng.”
She pointed out, “This is Dr.Xu, Dr.Liu , and Dr.An.”
“Hello, nice to meet you all,” Lin You greeted each of them.
“These are Nurses Zhang, Jiang, Nan, and Bei. Wang, Dong, and Yin aren’t here today.”
“Hello, everyone. Nan and Bei… are you twins?” Lin You asked, noticing the similarity in their names.
Nurse Nan chuckled, “Dr. Lin, you have a good sense of humor. We don’t even look alike!”
“Sorry, it was a reflex,” Lin You laughed.
“I’m Nan Qiao, and she’s Bei Jia,” Nurse Nan clarified, showing her name tag with a grin.
“Got it. I’ll remember,” Lin You smiled back.
Captain Song then gave a run down of the team’s structure and Lin You’s new role.
“Nurse Deng, could you get Dr. Lin her uniform and lab coat?”
“Dr. Lin, Dr. Liu and I are both surgeons, along with another doctor, Dr. Li, who’s on leave right now. The rest specialize in internal medicine.”
“Follow me for the time being. Here, it’s mostly minor procedures, so you’ll get the hang of things quickly with your skills.”
After the introduction, Head Nurse Deng handed Lin You her uniform. “Dr. Lin, here’s your uniform. Let us know if it doesn’t fit.”
“Nurses Nan and Bei, please show Dr. Lin to the changing room,” Captain Song requested.
As Lin You returned in her uniform, with her hair tied in a low bun, she exuded a calm, professional aura.
“Dr. Lin, you’re so beautiful! How did you get that way?” Nurse Nan teased.
“By eating food,” Lin You replied with a chuckle.
“How long have you been married to the squad leader? You two seem like opposites,” Nurse Bei asked curiously.
“Six years.”
“Wow, I thought you just got married! How old are you, Dr. Lin?” Nurse Bei inquired.
“I’m 26.”
Nurse Nan exclaimed, “So you were only 20 when you married him! Did he trick you into it?”
“Not exactly. We’ve known each other since we were kids.”
“Oh, childhood sweethearts! That explains it…” Nurse Nan began to say before Nurse Bei nudged her, cutting off the thought.
Lin You didn’t mind their questions. Although Qin Lang had introduced her to Captain Song, she knew that her colleagues might keep some distance due to her connection to the squad leader. Yet, she didn’t care, she wasn’t there to make friends but to gain experience. However, she found herself fond of Nan and Bei, who were both straight forward and sincere.
With them, she felt she didn’t have to be overly cautious about her words or worry about her identity.
