Chapter 36: Background
After a week, the two of them continued to maintain their cold war, neither of them willing to break the silence first.
Qin Lang didn’t go to the infirmary to find Lin You, and Lin You also tried to avoid appearing in front of him. When they occasionally ran into each other on the road, they would act like strangers and walk past one another.
Lin You thought to herself that perhaps the only time Qin Lang would come looking for her was when he was completely tired of her and no longer wanted to see her.
Maybe they would ultimately walk down the path of divorce.
Regardless of how things ended between them, she would still do her utmost to honor Qin Lang’s parents.
A few days later, Lin You heard from others that Qin Lang was going on a mission again.
Upon hearing this news, all she felt was a deep worry.
She couldn’t eat, couldn’t sleep, and her mind was filled with thoughts of Qin Lang’s safety. She no longer cared about her own feelings, she just wanted him to return safely.
As long as he could come back safe, she would definitely take the initiative to find him and tell him that deep down, she only cared about him.
A week later, Lin You met Shan Ye and Lu Li on the road and realized that Qin Lang must have returned as well. She greeted them proactively, “Shan Ye, Lu Li, you’re back? Was the mission successful?”
Shan Ye smiled and replied, “Sister in law, it went quite smoothly.”
Lin You nodded.
As long as Qin Lang was safe, her anxious heart finally began to settle.
“The captain hasn’t returned yet, he has some personal matters to attend to and didn’t come back with us,” Shan Ye added.
Lin You’s heart sank again, wondering what personal matters he had. Perhaps he really didn’t care about her anymore, in the past, he would have returned directly to the base.
Lu Li seemed to see through Lin You’s thoughts and comforted her “The captain asked us to tell sister-in-law not to worry, he will be back soon.”
Lin You nodded in thanks and walked towards the family dormitory, feeling a bit lost.
Meanwhile, Qin Lang rushed back to City C and immediately sought out his father.
It had been a long time since the two had seen each other, and they embraced tightly upon meeting. Qin Fu looked at Qin Lang with eyes full of pride, “Son, you’ve been getting along well with Lin You, right? Isn’t it especially nice to have a wife by your side?”
Qin Lang smiled and nodded but didn’t say much more.
Qin Fu took out a file from the drawer and handed it to Qin Lang.
Just as Qin Lang was about to open it, Qin Fu raised a hand to stop him: “Let’s look at it at home, we should wait until the three of us can discuss it together.”
Qin Lang obediently nodded in agreement.
Professor Song saw that the father and son had returned together but noticed Lin You was missing and quickly stepped forward to ask: “Where’s Youyou? Why didn’t she come back with you?”
Seeing this, Qin Lang felt a twinge of jealousy and said, “Mom, I’m your biological son too. Shouldn’t you be more concerned about me first?”
Professor Song completely ignored Qin Lang’s mildly complaining tone and continued to inquire “Yoyo has always been by my side, it’s been so long since I’ve seen her. I really miss her.”
“Is Yoyo doing well? How is she adapting? Has she bought winter clothes since it’s getting cold?”
Thinking about Lin You made Qin Lang’s heart ache. Before he left, they hadn’t reconciled yet.
To prevent his parents from worrying, he forced a smile and replied, “She’s doing fine, she lacks for nothing.”
Qin Fu saw through his son’s thoughts and knew he was hiding something. He said to his wife, Professor Song, “Honey, why don’t you go cook? We have something important to discuss.”
After dinner, the family of three sat in the living room, and the atmosphere was somewhat tense.
Qin Lang took a deep breath and slowly opened the folder in his hands. When he saw that it was filled with pictures of the same woman, his eyes widened in shock.
The woman in the photos looked strikingly similar to Lin You, and he realized it was Lin You’s mother Lu Jing!
The Lu Jing in the photos was beautiful and charming, with each image radiating allure. However, to their surprise, many of the photos featured Lu Jing with another man, who was not Lin You’s father, Lin Xiang.
Professor Song picked up the photos, scrutinizing them closely. She frowned and muttered, “How come there are so many pictures of Lu Jing? Where did they come from? We don’t even have a single photo of her in our house.”
Qin Fu’s expression grew serious as he replied, “Someone is investigating Yoyo’s background, and we suspect it might be Lu Jing’s family behind it.”
Qin Lang fell into deep thought.
Professor Song pointed at the man in the photo “Is this Lu Jing’s brother? Could this be Yoyo’s uncle?”
Qin Fu nodded and began explaining “Lu Jing’s father was a well known scientific talent who studied abroad and participated in national research projects. He didn’t marry and have children until later in life, having one son and one daughter.”
“He strongly opposed his daughter marrying Lin Xiang, not wanting her to have a hard life, but Lu Jing fell for Lin Xiang. So, he was always against their relationship.”
“Later, Lu Jing ran away from home and concealed her family background. They got married, and Lin Fu never learned of Lu Jing’s true identity before he sacrificed himself.”
“We only just found out about this.”
Professor Song voiced her concern “Why have they never tried to find Yoyo all these years?”
Qin Fu continued to explain “Lin Fu’s sacrifice was a military secret, there’s no way outsiders could uncover it. Even until Lu’s father passed away, he was still thinking about his daughter.”
“So, the search for Lu Jing fell to her brother, Lu Zhouchen. A few years ago, he learned that Lu Jing had also passed away and that she had a daughter.”
“We’ve been protecting Yoyo very well, and they’ve never found any clues until now, when Lu Li appeared by Qin Lang’s side, that caught our attention.”
Professor Song then asked Qin Lang, “Is Lu Li reliable?”
Qin Lang nodded, “So far, he seems quite trustworthy.”
Professor Song expressed her concerns “Does Lu’s family now approve of their granddaughter marrying a soldier when they previously disapproved of their daughter marrying one?”
Qin Lang stood up and replied firmly “Whether they approve or not, she’s already married.”
The other two nodded, agreeing with his statement.
Qin Fu asked Qin Lang, “Should we tell Yoyo?”
“Let’s wait a bit longer.”
“I’m planning to head back.”
Professor Song quickly stopped him “Son, Yoyo’s birthday is coming up. I bought her several outfits and some jewelry, you should take them back to her.”
Looking at the clothes Professor Song had packed for her, Qin Lang recalled her recent mood and attitude, feeling a headache coming on.
He picked up a jewelry box and opened it, finding a set of necklace and earrings, which he quickly put down and reminded his mother, “The army doesn’t allow these items, they’re useless if I take them.”
Professor Song shot him a glare and placed the items into the suitcase, complaining, “You and your father are the same, completely clueless about women. This is Yoyo’s favorite style and brand.”
“Her birthday is November 18th, remember to get her a gift.”
Qin Lang nodded, recalling how she had loathed red roses, and directly asked, “Mom, doesn’t she dislike red roses?”
Professor Song shook her head and answered “Yoyo loves pink roses best, specifically Elsa roses, their meaning is ‘You are the only one in my heart.’”
“Make sure to give them to her on her birthday.”
“Red roses are too passionate, they don’t suit Yoyo’s temperament, and they’re too cliché.”,
Qin Lang nodded, realizing why, she hadn’t even looked at them that day, it turned out she truly didn’t like them.
What about for him? Did she not like him either? Were her words that day sincere? Did she truly hate him?
Seeing her son’s troubled expression, Professor Song wondered if there was something wrong in their relationship “Son, is everything okay between you and Yoyo?”
Qin Lang didn’t answer but instead asked directly, “Mom, does Yoyo have feelings for me?”
Professor Song looked directly at him and asked, “Did you two have a fight?”
Qin Lang replied, “No,” but he didn’t dare to meet her gaze.
Professor Song saw through him “If not, you would’ve brought Yoyo back with you, or let your dad go pick her up. How could you leave her alone at the base?”
“Yoyo is temperamental. Don’t let her calm demeanor fool you, when she gets angry, she won’t talk, which could drive you crazy.”
Qin Lang agreed with her assessment. Taking a deep breath, he decided to tell Professor Song about everything that had happened recently.
After hearing everything, Professor Song hit Qin Lang lightly and said in an unkind tone, “What’s up with this Qiong Hua? How can she directly question Yoyo? Doesn’t she know who the real party is?”
“Yoyo is just not good with words, which is why she gets bullied. I want to go back with you to see her and stand up for her. Do they think my
Qin family is pushovers?”
Saying that, he pulled out his phone and prepared to take leave from the hospital.
