Chapter 54: Daily Life – The Squad Leader’s Cherished Wife
After returning to the base, their lives settled back into a familiar routine. Lin You was busy in the medical team, while Qin Lang focused on training. Days passed in the same steady rhythm though monotonous, it was fulfilling.
But sometimes, even routine needs a little excitement.
Sure enough, Xiao Nan arrived with some juicy news, sneaking into the medical office where Lin You and Dr. Liu were stationed.
“Did you hear? The head nurse and Dan Ye had a fight!” she said mysteriously.
Dr. Liu, immediately curious, asked, “Why?”
Lowering her voice, Xiao Nan replied, “It seems it’s because of Qiong Hua.”
Dr. Liu guessed, “So, does Qiong Hua like Dan Ye again?”
Xiao Nan shook her head, “Seems more like Dan Ye likes Qiong Hua. Recently, Qiong Hua’s changed a lot; she’s become friendly and approachable, no longer high and mighty like before.”
Dr. Liu nodded, acknowledging that Qiong Hua was indeed easier to get along with now. But it still didn’t seem like a reason for Dan Ye to fall for her again.
Lin You looked up, also doubtful. She didn’t think Dan Ye was that type of person.
Curious, Xiao Nan turned to Lin You. “Dr. Lin, what do you think?”
Lin You smiled slightly and replied softly, “I don’t think Dan Ye is that kind of person.”
Xiao Bei quickly agreed, “Yeah, I don’t think so either.”
Xiao Nan then furrowed her brow thoughtfully. “Honestly, I don’t want to believe it either, but the head nurse really seemed hurt. She didn’t look like she was faking it.”
Xiao Bei scratched her head, confused. “Maybe it’s just a misunderstanding? I mean, Dan Ye seemed really attentive to the head nurse before.”
“And they even met each other’s families. Shouldn’t that mean they’re pretty stable?” Dr. Liu shook his head, perplexed. “Yeah, it’s probably some kind of misunderstanding.”
Xiao Bei nodded in agreement.
And so the three of them kept chatting, speculating without reaching any conclusions.
Lin You, meanwhile, sat quietly, watching the three girls enthusiastically gossip. She couldn’t help but smile to herself, thinking, “Ah, where there are women, there’s always gossip. Some things never change.”
Hearing her chuckle, the three looked at her.
“Dr. Lin, what’s so funny?” Xiao Nan asked first.
With a playful glint in her eye, Lin You replied, “I just find it amusing that you’re gossiping about others.”
Xiao Nan blushed slightly, a bit embarrassed but quickly recovered with a mischievous grin, saying, “Well, we used to gossip about you and the squad leader too!”
Lin You was taken a back, her cheeks turning a light shade of red as she looked down, embarrassed.
Seeing her reaction, Xiao Bei nudged her again, “Dr. Lin, any thoughts on the head nurse and Dan Ye? After all, we’re all still single here!”
Lin You looked up, sighing lightly. “I think the head nurse and Dan Ye are both smart people. They should be able to resolve it on their own.”
“Besides, we don’t actually know what happened between them, so it’s all just speculation.”
“It’s best to let them handle it.”
Dr. Liu nodded thoughtfully, agreeing with her perspective.
Xiao Nan sighed dramatically, her tone tinged with regret. “Yeah, you’re right. We’re just busy bodies who can’t do anything but meddle. But it’s so hard not to be curious!”
The group burst into laughter.
Later that afternoon, when the head nurse came into the medical unit, her eyes were red, clearly from crying.
The group exchanged looks but didn’t dare ask or say anything.
Even Captain Song noticed the tense atmosphere, quickly leaving the room to avoid the awkwardness.
Dinner Time
During dinner, Lin You asked Qin Lang, “What’s going on between Dan Ye and the head nurse?”
Qin Lang looked puzzled. “What? Is something up with them?”
Seeing his clueless expression, Lin You shook her head and decided to say nothing more.
But Qin Lang, now intrigued, pressed her, “Why do you ask? Did something happen?”
Lin You recounted what she’d heard earlier in the day.
After hearing it all, Qin Lang guessed, “Maybe Qiong Hua is leaving, and Dan Ye’s having a hard time letting go.”
Lin You was shocked; she’d assumed Qiong Hua was staying. She felt a pang of guilt, wondering if it was her fault that led to Qiong Hua’s choice.
Sensing her thoughts, Qin Lang explained, “She got injured last time, and it’ll take a lot of rehab for her to recover fully.”
“Her family decided that it would be best for her to transfer.”
Lin You nodded, tentatively expressing her worry, “Do you think she still blames me?”
Qin Lang shook his head and countered with a question, “Why are you taking this on yourself?”
Seeing her still feeling guilty, he comforted her, “Everything happened because she was too stubborn. It’s not on you. Besides, her parents were never thrilled about her being in the special forces.”
“When is she leaving? Should we see her off?” Lin You asked softly.
“Sure,” Qin Lang replied.
Lin You suddenly remembered Dan Ye and asked again, “So, what’s going on with Dan Ye? What did you mean by ‘hard to let go’?”
Qin Lang sighed, “When you’ve liked someone for so long and realize you might never see them again, it’s natural to feel sad.”
Lin You, surprised that Xiao Nan’s speculation might be accurate, retorted, “If he can’t get over Qiong Hua, why did he even agree to be with the head nurse?”
“Isn’t that the classic case of ‘having his cake and wanting to eat it too’?”
Getting worked up, she added, “Men are all the same. They have someone by their side, but their hearts are somewhere else, never truly committing.”
Seeing her storm off to the kitchen in a huff, Qin Lang felt exasperated. He’d only shared his opinion, he couldn’t understand why she was so upset.
After all, it was someone else’s situation. He could manage their training, but he couldn’t control their personal lives. Why was she taking it out on him?
Qin Lang followed Lin You into the kitchen, embracing her from behind and holding her hands as she washed dishes. Mimicking her usual playful tone, he said in a cutesy voice, “Honey, I’m so wronged! How could you put others’ issues on me?”
Lin You shivered at his voice, her anger dissipating a little. She shot back, “Gross. Annoying.”
Qin Lang also cringed at his own act, reverting to his usual voice, “Honey, this has nothing to do with me.” He reached over to place the last washed dish in the cabinet.
Lin You, not satisfied, splashed her wet hands in his face, leaving water droplets all over him.
“You’re his leader. If you can’t set a good example, he won’t learn either.”
