Chapter 56: Since We Can’t Sleep, Let’s Find Some Excitement
Ji Chunhua was stunned.
Why is it that being born into the Ji family gives one a chance to choose?
Her father had become the head of the village, but even the village head of Dawai Village couldn’t intervene in matters of other villages!
Relying on her older brothers and younger siblings wasn’t a long-term solution either.
Ji Chunhua couldn’t make sense of it and asked, “What’s the difference between being born into the Ji family and being born into another family?”
Hu Zhaodi answered calmly, “Because now I am also a member of the Ji family, your natal family. I’m your sister, and together with my three brothers, we can back you up.”
Ji Chunhua was deeply moved, and tears once again welled up in her eyes.
“Zhaodi, with your words, I’m content. You can back me up for a moment, but not for a lifetime. The road ahead still depends on me walking it myself.”
Hu Zhaodi spoke earnestly, “Sister Chunhua, domestic violence only has two possibilities—zero times or countless times. I hope you can separate from your husband and completely break free from your current in-laws.”
Ji Chunhua shook her head sadly, “Zhaodi, you’re still young, you don’t understand. When a woman marries, she follows her husband. Which well-raised girl, after marriage, gets a divorce?
After a divorce, how will I support myself and the children?
And I’ll be pointed at by the villagers—how could I hold my head up in the future?
This can’t be blamed on my husband or mother-in-law. If anyone is to blame, it’s my womb for being useless, unable to give birth to a son.”
“Rubbish!” Hu Zhaodi swore angrily. “What do you mean it’s your womb’s fault?
A woman giving birth is already hard enough. Whether she has a boy or a girl is determined by the man’s chromosomes, not her body.
Men have no right to beat women for not having a son.
Sister Chunhua, do you really think you’re at fault?”
“I’m not at fault.” Ji Chunhua subconsciously raised her voice. “I married into their family to bear children for them and to be filial to my mother-in-law. What did I do wrong?
On the other hand, my mother-in-law has never liked me. She always preferred a woman from a neighboring village.
But that family wanted too high a bride price, so they couldn’t afford it and came to the Ji family to ask for my hand.
Since I married into their family, my mother-in-law has never treated me well.
I had a room to live in, but after I gave birth to my first daughter, she drove me to the firewood room.
During my confinement, she never allowed me to eat enough, and any food she deemed good, she ate in secret. She never thought of me, her daughter-in-law, who had just given birth…”
Ji Chunhua poured out all the grievances she had endured over the years.
Hu Zhaodi almost lost her temper several times while listening.
How could such a good person like Sister Chunhua end up with such an evil mother-in-law?
How despicable!
So despicable!
Suppressing her anger, Hu Zhaodi said, “Sister Chunhua, let’s go eat first. There are guests at home. After the meal, we can talk more.”
Ji Chunhua wiped her tears and nodded. “Okay.”
Hu Zhaodi helped Ji Chunhua put on her clothes, and the two walked out of the room together.
Han Dongsheng and Wu Yinghai immediately approached.
“Zhaodi, is your Sister Chunhua’s injury alright?” Han Dongsheng asked.
Hu Zhaodi shook her head slightly. “It’s just some surface wounds, but there’s hardly a spot on her body that’s unhurt.”
Wu Yinghai spoke with anger, “Damn it, those bastards! Zhaodi, tell me how you want to get revenge. I’ll help you.”
Han Dongsheng added, “And me.”
The three Ji brothers also came over. “And us.”
Ji Chunhua’s tears, which had been wiped away with great difficulty, once again welled up in her eyes.
This time, however, they were tears of gratitude.
In the past, whenever she returned to her natal family, she always hid her grievances and only shared good news with her parents, never the bad.
This time, she had been beaten so badly, and then heartlessly driven out by her mother-in-law, that she had no choice but to return home, covered in injuries.
She never expected that not only would her brothers be willing to stand up for her, but even Hu Zhaodi and her foster brother were furious and wanted to help her seek justice.
Now, she finally understood.
She understood why Hu Zhaodi had said that being born into the Ji family meant she still had a chance to make choices.
It turned out that this opportunity was something Zhaodi had given her.
“Zhaodi, thank you, thank you all!” Ji Chunhua said, her voice choked with emotion.
At that moment, Mrs. Ji, tears welling up in her eyes, walked over. “Zhaodi, your Sister Chunhua is living a life no better than a beast’s! It’s not much different from when you were at the Hu family.”
Hu Zhaodi spoke to comfort her, “When I was little, you was always so kind to me. I’ll handle this matter. Anyone who dares to bully my Sister Chunhua will pay the price.”
Mr. Ji spoke with determination, “Not only should those who’ve harmed Chunhua pay, but we’ll bring the two nieces back. The Ji family can support them.”
Hu Zhaodi nodded, “That’s right. We can support them, and not only that, I’ll make sure the two children attend a private school.”
Mr. Ji spoke again, “Let’s eat first. After dinner, we’ll discuss the plan slowly. We can’t let our esteemed guests go hungry.”
Three tables were set up in the courtyard, with Mr. Ji, Hu Zhaodi, Han Dongsheng, Wu Yinghai, and the three Ji brothers sitting at one table.
Wu Yinghai picked up his bowl, then put it down again. “Zhaodi, why don’t we let the coachmen return first after the meal, and tonight we’ll go seek justice for Sister Chunhua? I’m so angry, I won’t be able to sleep tonight.”
Hu Zhaodi picked up her bowl. “Brother Wu eat your meal first, we’ll talk after.”
“Zhaodi, just say yes or no!” Wu Yinghai urged impatiently.
“You said yourself you’ll be restless and can’t sleep tonight. I’m the same. Since neither of us can sleep, why not find something exciting to do?” Hu Zhaodi replied.
Wu Yinghai and Han Dongsheng both laughed and picked up their bowls to eat.
After dinner, Han Dongsheng instructed ten coachmen, “You all go back first. Tomorrow morning, continue loading the blue bricks and bring them over.”
“Yes, Young Master Han,” the ten coachmen responded.
After watching the ten carriages leave, Hu Zhaodi turned to Ji Chunhua. “Sister Chunhua, go change your clothes and take me to your in-laws’ house.”
Ji Chunhua hesitated. “Zhaodi, do we really have to go? Are you truly going to seek justice for me?”
Hu Zhaodi’s expression was resolute. “Of course we’re going. Otherwise, how are you going to live in the future? Will you keep compromising? Or wait to be beaten to death?”
“But there are only a few of you. I’m afraid you’ll suffer. The people of Dahuaishu Village are very united. Whenever someone has a problem, they just shout, and the whole village comes to help.”
Hu Zhaodi patted Ji Chunhua’s hand in comfort. “What’s there to fear? I don’t believe all the people in Dahuaishu Village are unreasonable.
They have daughters too, and their daughters will one day become someone else’s daughters-in-law.
Would they want to see their own daughters suffer the same way in their future marriage?”
Ji Chunhua nodded. “Alright, I’ll go change clothes.”
“Go ahead!”
Ji Chunhua changed into an old set of clothes, and together with Hu Zhaodi, Han Dongsheng, Wu Yinghai, and the three Ji brothers, headed toward Dahuaishu Village.
