21.
The omega had never thought that something beyond boundaries could happen between him and Mr. A.
He was his mentor, his benefactor, and undoubtedly, it was he who pulled him out of the mire of life. It wouldn’t even be an exaggeration to call him his savior. He was so outstanding, so brilliant, and so cold. Compared to him, the two alphas he had experienced were indeed, as Mr. A said, nothing but pig food.
Finding an alpha to accompany him through life would be wonderful, but if the partner was someone like Mr. A… he felt he was still reaching too high.
However, after reading Mr. A’s usual cold and simple message, he suddenly felt there might still be a slight chance for this matter.
“He quickly opened his optical brain, deleting and editing several times before replying, ‘It’s okay, I know you didn’t mean it.’
Ding-dong, Mr. A replied almost instantly.
【You’re not asleep either?】
Omega thought for a moment and responded: 【Yes, I woke up.】
There was a long silence on the other end. Just when Omega thought the conversation was over, Mr. A sent another message: 【Let me talk about what happened yesterday.】
He’s calling! Omega gathered his thoughts, only to hear his terminal ring.
It was his call.
With a sense of unease, Omega picked up the call, carefully greeting with a “Hello,” before hearing Mr. A’s voice: “What are your plans moving forward?”
So direct.
“I think… we should keep things as they are right now. I think our current relationship is fine…” Omega carefully chose his words, trying to steer the conversation away from anything deeper.
“Current relationship?” Perhaps due to the late hour, Mr. A’s voice had a slightly hoarse, sluggish tone, and it was hard to tell if he was angry or indifferent. “What relationship?”
“Well, just friends!” In the deep silence around him, Omega’s voice naturally rose a bit. He hurriedly lowered his tone, feeling uneasy. “We can be friends. You’ve helped me so much, and I’m willing to think of you as my teacher. Isn’t that good? Even if it’s… a hundred percent… that kind of connection, it doesn’t necessarily mean… that kind of thing.”
Omega strained to think of a way to sidestep the topic of matching for marriage, but just then, Mr. A’s voice cut in without mercy: “Which one? The hundred percent match? Marriage?”
Hearing those two words in the stillness of the night nearly made Omega’s scalp feel like it was on fire. Ever since he first met Mr. A, he had always been particularly sharp at poking fun at him, each time piercing through the depths of his thoughts. Omega had always believed it was because he was too naïve and easy to read. But now, he wondered if there was some destined reason behind it all.
“…Sorry,” he deflated instantly. “It’s just that, with Mr. A’s conditions, you could definitely find someone much better than me. There were so many times I’ve appeared in front of you, and I was a mess. I don’t really know how to explain it, but I’m almost forty. No matter how much I change, I’ve been divorced once, and I’ve been with another alpha…”
“I’m thirty-six, what’s the problem?” Mr. A asked. “Divorce isn’t such a big deal, after all, you didn’t bind yourself to them…”
“That’s not the reason!” Omega hurriedly rebutted. “What I mean is… you’re such a famous makeover specialist, you’ve studied abroad, and everyone in your family has achieved great success in their respective fields. As for me… my parents protected me too well and left too soon. They didn’t leave me anything but money. Look, I never even received higher education, and I’m only starting to learn many things now… If those people say you and I are a hundred percent compatible, fine.”
He took a deep breath, then exhaled heavily, speaking in a low voice: “But besides our pheromones, where else are we a match? I don’t think you’re the type of alpha who just acts on instinct. You’ve always been so calm and rational…”
There was a long silence on the other end.
“I remember I told you before,” Mr. A’s voice was calm, “Stand tall and straight, don’t always shrink away.
Of course, if what you’re worried about is that, there is a way.”
Omega froze. “What way?”
“We can give it a try first,” Mr. A said casually. “You also said I’m not the type of alpha who acts purely on instinct, so let’s just try and see.”
Omega was dumbfounded. “Huh?”
Mr. A’s voice was soft and slow: “In an intimate relationship, both sides will gradually reveal their flaws. If we’re discussing feelings based on that…”
“Oh,” Omega seemed to understand a little, “So, what you’re saying is, we try talking first, and if the other person has any flaws that are unbearable, then it would be natural to separate, right?”
Mr. A paused for a moment: “That can be one way to understand it. So, can we consider this a mutual agreement?”
“Ah… ah…” Perhaps it was because it was so late, but Omega’s mind felt a bit foggy. He didn’t understand how the conversation had shifted so quickly.
“Alright, then, get some more rest. It’s almost dawn,” Omega felt like he could sense a slight shift in Mr. A’s tone, as if it had become a little more cheerful. “Goodbye.”
“Wait… wait, hold on!” Omega finally snapped out of it, but the other side had already hung up.
Omega stood there, dumbfounded, a thousand wild thoughts racing through his mind, leaving nothing but a cloud of dust in their wake.
