Release the Female Lead, Leave Her to Me
Release the Female Lead Ch. 565

Chapter 565: It’s Not in the Script!

Ye Wenxin sighed. The envoy approached her conspiratorially. “Oh, and by the way, the Flower Lord is still single.”

Although the envoy wasn’t personally interested in Ye Wenxin, she seemed eager to play matchmaker.

Ye Wenxin forced a smile, but the kitsune behind her interjected in a low tone, “She already has a mating partner.”

The envoy looked surprised. “But aren’t rabbits supposed to have, um, high needs…? Sorry, I don’t mean any insult—I just thought…” The envoy fumbled for words. Her explanation only became more awkward.

Ye Wenxin was beginning to regret taking on a rabbit demon’s form. She’d forgotten rabbits were among the most notoriously amorous species alongside poodles. This trait would remain even after becoming a demon. Although demons weren’t numerous, various unofficial records gave people the impression that kitsune, rabbits, and similar demons favored certain physical activities.

“It’s alright, I’m used to it. But I’m quite chaste.” Ye Wenxin touched her rabbit ears. She could feel the actual texture. Soft furry ears had replaced her human ones, and she could even change their form.

Although she also had Xiao Zhang’s Shape-shifting Technique, it consumed tremendous energy. Ye Wenxin was disinclined to waste her energy on something like this.

With the misunderstanding resolved, the envoy smiled and shifted the conversation to her people’s welfare. Ye Wenxin sensed how much this envoy loved her homeland. Her eyes practically sparkled with passion as she spoke.

Her words were so moving that they stirred within Ye Wenxin a genuine desire to visit the Hundred Flowers Dynasty…

A few days elapsed, and it was time for the Hundred Flowers Dynasty envoys to return. Hua Ju, one of the envoys, had a look of reluctance on her face. She seemed especially fond of her new friend, Ye Wenxin, and didn’t want to part from her so soon.

“Wenxin, are you sure you won’t come with us?”

Ye Wenxin smiled and shook her head. In truth, she had already informed Wen Susu of her plans. However, she intentionally avoided saying goodbye to the kitsune, lest the kitsune keep her from leaving Liu City.

“*Sigh,* it’s a blessing you demons can live so long. For us, life passes in the blink of an eye. Who knows if I’ll be alive the next time we meet?” The envoy’s tone grew somber, reflecting on the inevitabilities of human mortality.

Death came swiftly for non-cultivator humans. While a thousand years passed like a moment for cultivators, humans lived for a century at most.

“We’ll surely meet again soon… Fox Queen, may I see them off?” Ye Wenxin put on a convincing show of reluctance. Although disgruntled, the kitsune nodded, relieved that Ye Wenxin would no longer be sticking close to the envoy.

With a flourish of her staff, the kitsune opened the gates and revealed a bright path. It was Liu City’s original road, concealed by the kitsune clan’s illusion spell that kept the city hidden. Ordinary people couldn’t hope to locate Liu City, and this secrecy ensured their safety.

Coincidentally, while it was relatively easy to enter Liu City, leaving was another matter. Only those with authority could unlock the illusion. Fairy Fengya could forcefully break through the barrier, but Ye Wenxin lacked such power. She required the kitsune to lift the enchantment so she could leave without fuss.

“Alright, make it quick.” The kitsune was unaware of Ye Wenxin’s crazy little scheme. The kitsune waved her off, trusting the unusual seriousness on her face.

As the envoy shared a fond farewell with Ye Wenxin, she soon began to sense that something wasn’t quite right.

“Sister Wenxin, are you really just sending us off?” The envoy’s eyes gleamed. She could see the fox-like cunning that lay beneath the rabbit demon exterior. Ye Wenxin was a trickster at her core.

“Of course, I am,” Ye Wenxin replied with a grin, “but I’m sending you all the way back to the Hundred Flowers Dynasty.” The envoy understood immediately and promptly urged the coachman, “Drive faster!”

Ye Wenxin laughed. “No need to rush. The Fox Queen isn’t about to come running after me.” After all, the Heavenly Book, Wen Susu, and the kitsune, Luo Mo, were curse-bound to this city.

Ye Wenxin couldn’t share that information with outsiders, so she smiled cryptically. The envoy was thrilled but quickly regained her composure. She began rummaging through her things, searching for something to cover Ye Wenxin’s rabbit ears.

“No need, I can just make them disappear.” Ye Wenxin now had the perfect excuse to hide her ears. But the envoy quickly stopped her.

“That won’t do. Just cover them up on the way. Once we reach the Hundred Flowers Dynasty, you’ll be able to stand proudly in front of everyone,” the envoy said confidently, as if it were guaranteed.

Ye Wenxin was intrigued. She didn’t understand how the Hundred Flowers Dynasty could be indiscriminate towards demons. However, the envoy kept the reason a mystery no matter how Ye Wenxin probed.

Ye Wenxin decided to grab the book fragment and directly inquire Wen Susu.

“You’re asking me about such a trivial matter?” Wen Susu sounded annoyed, her Heavenly Book haughtiness flaring up. She still explained, though. “The Flower Lord is especially fond of animals. For that reason, every household raises pets or demonic beasts. By the way, the Beast Taming Garden you’re familiar with has the backing of the Hundred Flowers Dynasty.”

Wen Susu elaborated on the intricate connections involved. Since the Hundred Flowers Dynasty had a strong tradition of raising pets and even demonic beasts, seeing an actual demon, or Ye Wenxin disguised as a rabbit demon, might actually create an uproar.

Ye Wenxin felt nervous. She didn’t want to go to the Hundred Flowers Dynasty in such a conspicuous bunny form. However, the envoy insisted she looked great like this. They discussed the matter for a few days on the road. In the end, Ye Wenxin couldn’t resist the envoy’s enthusiasm and reluctantly agreed.

The journey went smoothly. They had three run-ins with bandits and four attempted assaults, but it was peaceful overall. On the eighth day, they finally arrived at the Hundred Flowers Dynasty.

The first thing that came into view once they passed through the gates was a vast sea of flowers.

Flowers surrounded every house. The people wore vibrant, colorful clothing, blending in with the blossoms around them. Alongside them were various animals or demonic beasts. Some people were even dueling with demonic beasts, giving the image of a Pokémon knockoff.

Ye Wenxin looked around in surprise. Getting this glimpse of the Hundred Flowers Dynasty made her even more curious about what the spirit beast battles in Beast Taming Garden would look like.

“Alright, Sister Wenxin. You can take off your cloak now.” The envoy’s face was full of anticipation as she waited for Ye Wenxin to reveal her flashy ears. She wondered how much of a spectacle they would make in a place with animal mania.

Ye Wenxin hesitated for a moment but eventually took off her cloak. The surroundings suddenly became eerily quiet.

One second… two seconds…

However, the expected frenzy didn’t occur. Ye Wenxin stood there completely puzzled. The envoy was dumbfounded, too. She had no idea what was going on.

Honestly I still feel like there is to much left unsaid about whole Liu city. What about these children who was newly recruited in the academy, did they became ghosts too? Why was teacher Wu Yong more pleased with daughter as a student? What was innkeepers list with children names given to kitsune for?
Feels like the focus of the arc got shifted half-way with these plot points being forgotten, leaving a feeling of unsatisfaction at arc conclusion.
This even makes a little harder to enjoy this story fully, cause you left wondering about all these plot point that ended never elaborated on.
